July 26-27 2008

Early in the week Liam’s practice sweat and shorts as well as his football cleats came in. We have been practicing in the yard a little and he is getting good at taking a handoff and knowing when to run as well as fall on fumbles.

 S-LiamWithFirstCleats.jpgS-LiamsNewCleatsjpg.jpg

We both worked Friday making up time or getting ahead. It was a pretty quiet weekend. Friday after dinner Erin ran to Target and Old Navy looking for shirts for the boys for the photo shoot by Stacy Bahr the following morning. After the boys were in bed we watched a movie.

Saturday morning we were all up bright and early including myself. We needed to be at Greenwell State Park by 8 AM. Stacey wanted to meet us there that early to get a certain light. She is known for natural shots and likes to take shots as early or as late as possible in the daylight. We swung by a tree that overlooked the Patuxent and Stacy took some shots there. We were looking for a family portrait, a 2 year shot of Jaxson, a 4 year shot of Liam, and a good shot of the boys together.

We then swung down to the beach area and the boys got more comfortable including getting pretty wet but she liked the boys just being natural and trying to catch moments like that. Stacy had no trouble with Liam. He was loving the attention and having his picture taken. Jax was another story. He wasn’t bad he just was a typical two year old and having his picture taking was not as fun as throwing rocks in the water and running up and down the beach. All in all it was fun even if it was early. Hopefully our shots will be good. The photography on her web site is great.

 S-JaxWearingDaddysShades.jpg

Saturday afternoon we took books back to the library and did some grocery shopping. Jaxson was funny as he loves to sing “We will we will rock you” from Queen. Just to hear him say that many words together is great. He does enjoy the acoustic echoes on stores so we have to tone down his exuberance. When we got home we took care of the groceries and  I watched the Indy Race. Later that evening Erin and I watched a Netflix movie Bagboy which was an amusing take on working at a grocery.

On Sunday Erin took the dogs to the Dog Park with Liam while Jaxson and I stayed back and played cars. Erin mowed the back and I was going to mow the front but it rained. I will have to do that this next week. We all watched teh end of Swiss Family Robinson and teh start of Herbie the Love Bug but then it was nap time for 3 out if 4 of us.  I was really tired in the afternoon and napped while the kids napped which is unusual for me. Our microwave went after only two years which was a big disappointment so Erin ran to Target while I watched the boys and got a microwave (different brand not Emerson) and new slip covers for the old den couches. The green really looks good on the couches.

 S-BoysRainyDayMovies.jpg

We then had a nice steak dinner with fresh corn on the cob and a Tastefully Simple bread with some oil to dip in that was delicious. I did not eat a whole bunch as I just wasn’t feeling great. Erin caught up on phone calls we kicked back and watched a bit of television. I went to bed not too far behind Erin.

Erin’s shoulder improved quite a bit this weekend and her mobility is really coming back. She had a major disappointment Monday morning as her Wii Fitness disk seems to have a weird scratch. She called Nintendo and is hopes of getting a replacement disk as it is under the 90 days. Next weekend is a big weekend. I am going to Pennsylvania and move Mom. She is moving from her old apartment which is getting pretty dilapidated and moving to a nice new one in New Hope. It will be a better life for her. Noah and our friends Perry and Sue are helping us. Erin will be taking Liam, man I wish I could clone myself Friday, to his first football practice for the Pax River Raiders. I will have plenty more practices to catch up on.  The coach just called tonight and we have already been switched from one park to another temporarily but we will deal with it.

So I might as well back up a few days to mention my shoulder arthroscopy.  I seem to have Impingement Syndrome and a couple of bone spurs on my collarbone aren't helping the matter.  Wednesday morning, we got around as usual.  We dropped off the boys at daycare and then dropped off the van at our friend, Sue’s, as she was going to use it to pick up the boys from daycare later that afternoon.  Her daughters, Amy and Jenna, were going to watch the boys for us until we arrived home from the hospital.

We traveled to Calvert Memorial Hospital where we checked in around 10:15.  Then the nurses proceeded to poke and prod me for the next couple hours while I sat and starved and Russ tried to concentrate on a magazine.  I suppose it was near 1:30 when the anesthesiologist wheeled me to the surgery prep area where he gave me a nerve block. BOY, was that the weirdest feeling ever!  He stuck me in the neck and then proceed to have fun twitching my fingers and arm until he was satisfied he got the right spot.  Then I was wheeled into surgery, transported to the table, and then went to sleep as the surgeon chipped the bone spurs from my collarbone, and relieved some of the bursitis.

I woke up in recovery right around 3:00, and my right arm was bone cold.  I mentioned that to the nurse, and she told me my hand was plenty warm.  When I felt for myself it was incredibly weird.  Because of the nerve block, I had absolutely no feeling or control in my right arm.  It was like touching someone else’s hand.  Thankfully, though, despite that odd feeling, I was in pretty good shape.  My shoulder had a football sized pad on it, and my arm was in a funky sling.  We discharged right around 4:30.

That put us in our own neighborhood around 5:30, so we dropped off my prescriptions which would take about an hour to fill.  I was really hungry, so Russ took me to Arby’s.  We lingered there for a while before heading to CVS and then home.  The boys weren’t in bed yet, but they were fed, so after we bid our sitters goodbye, Russ went to work getting them bathed and in bed.  I got myself set up on the couch.

The couch is pretty much where I stayed for the next two days.  I got feeling back in my arm in the middle of the first night home, and that was a relief.  I took the Vicadin, but it made my vision blurry, so I nixed that and just stuck to extra strength Tylenol.  As far as I can tell, I don’t have any real stitches, just punctures on the front, side, and back of my shoulder.  I was very swollen, and incredibly stiff.  My range of motion is limited, but it gets better every day.  It really feels like a very very very sore muscle.  Russ was so great through it all.  He left work early to pick up the boys from daycare, and made dinners and got them ready for bed.  He even took us out for ice cream on Friday night.

 S-PoolTime072008-LiamSlides.jpgS-RussShootingBaskets.jpg

S-LiamDadLearningToRide3.jpg

Come Saturday though, I was beginning to force myself to move a little more.  Russ set up the wading pool for the boys in the morning which they loved.  The boys played outside and down in the basement where it was cool.  I stayed on the couch a little more and we ordered in for dinner.

Sunday had a pretty slow pace as well.  We did go out to get a few groceries.  I needed to do some laundry and was out of soap.  Other than that, we really didn’t do a whole lot.  I took the kids to a nearby playground, but it was so hot that we didn’t stay long.  Once back  home we got some lunch and the boys and I took a nap. I managed to sew some “flag-belts” so Russ and Liam could practice some flag football together. Once the Indy race was over after nap, Liam was itching to go out with Dad for some practice.  It was hilarious, but I was so impressed that Russ was a natural coach, and that Liam was an eager learner.  Even Cleo and Jaxson joined in the chase.

 S-FootballTime-RussChaseLiam.jpgS-FootballTime-PracticingHandOff.jpg

Sunday rounded out with a nice dinner together.  Things were getting back to normal despite the limited use of my arm.  I figure if I’m twice as better NEXT Sunday as I am today, I should be faring pretty well in the long run.  I’m sure Physical Therapy will start soon.

July 12-13, 2008

It was a catch up chore kind of weekend. During the week we watched the movie Cloverfield which got a lot of hype at the theater. It was pretty dull in the beginning watching people film others. It got more interesting when the monster showed up but really tell me how and WHY someone would continue hold a camera. I would have dropped that camera the first time I saw the 100 foot odd sized monster and ran like hell the other way … end of movie. Lame we both didn’t like it – two stars!

On Friday we decided to stop by Nicoletti’s for dinner. We sat next to the toys and the kids were good and entertained. Friday night Erin and I you tubed for the first time in a while and enjoyed the news anchor bloopers. One was of a reporter on the scene and the news anchor starting to bicker about their jobs and past history.

On Saturday I slept on but was ready to roll when I got up. We had a lot of errands to run:

  1. Lowes – Toilet Gasket and Dirt for the garden
  2.  Petco – Dog Food
  3. Target- Looking for memory disk for camera – Ours was corrupted and we could not fix it by tips on-line. We will use the old one to transfer files/pictures and watch them on the Wii.
  4. Best Buy – Erin remembered the memory disk for our camera had cheaper replacements here so we got that at Best Buy.
  5. Five Guys - Decided to eat lunch at Five Guys Burgers. A gentleman noticed Erin babywearing Jax in a sling and approached us and was very interested in babywearing for his wife. Erin gave him a card.
  6. Wal-Mart – Erin had seen slip covers for couches at a good price at the Mansfield Pennsylvania Wal-Mart so we decided to check our Wal-Mart. No dice. Erin passed out another card. Erin also started to post flyers that day on our stops through businesses for her Babywearing business.

On a side note we saw a display for football sign ups for the Patuxent River Raiders. I joked with Liam as we walked by as Liam LOVES the Raiders logo. He thinks it is a knight for some reason rather than a Pirate with a football helmet. I told Liam he could play for them someday. The coach said,  "He could play now, how old is he?" pointing to Liam.. When I told him Liam was four, he told us that they have NFL Sponsored Flag footballstarting at four. Liam and I both got excited. Well we took a card from Coach Green and told him we would seriously consider it.

  1. Famous Footwear – Our errands continued as I talked Erin into letting me look for some new sandals for Jaxson. He is wearing an old pair of Liam’s this summer but I don’t like the way they fit him. Well our kids instantly melt down in this store for some reason. They ALWAYS misbehave at the shoe store. Liam instantly got hyper and Jaxson thinks the shoe store is a place where parents play tag with him. Since he was the one we were trying to get shoes for it was tough. After looking at a few pair we decided nothing was any good.
  2. Marshalls- We decided to try here before moving on as it was right next door to the shoe store. We lucked into a nice pair of black sandals on clearance for ten dollars. Great buy and I am satisfied they fit him much better.
  3. Lexington Park Library- I had books due back and was in the mood for more books on knights and some books about football. I found a couple of basic books about football at his level that will introduce him to football.
  4. McKays Grocery- Final stop and since Erin bought a few groceries last week we didn’t need a whole lot and the kids needed a nap bad at this point.

We arrived home at 3:30 and put the kids right down for a nap. We decided house chores would wait until Sunday. I looked at the football website and looked things over. I did not see where it said four years olds could play and had a few questions myself that I wanted to get an answer to. I took the card that coach Green had given me and called the league president and left a message.

Since McKays had a 4.99 a pound sale on Crab we all had crab for dinner and it was tasty. We all enjoyed it and watched the Food Network and HGTV while eating. Dad called I helped him with moving some pictures around on his computer while Erin bathed the boys.

Saturday night Erin was really tired from staying up late Friday night and getting up with the boys. She retired on the living room couch to read but fell asleep. I watched the Nashville Indy Car race. There was some excellent racing early on and some three wide moments on a one groove track. Rain threatened most of the race and the Target Chip Ganassi team won after making a mistake. They were supposed to pit and missed their cue. Everone of the other leaders pitted and it began to rain not to long after a new green giving the Ganassi boys a 1-2 finish!! Erin woke and watched the end of the Race with me. I then got bonus racing after she retired for the evening and watched the NASCAR race finish.

On Sunday I watched TV upstairs while Erin gave a baby wearing demo and made a sale for her new baby wearing business.

I told Erin at Lowe’s the day before I was forgetting something. I forgot to take the propane that had needed exchanging for three weeks. We also both forgot the milk at the grocery the day before which Erin got first thing in Sunday morning. We went back to Lowes (trip 2 of 3 to Lowes this weekend – that’s normal).I ran in and got the propane exchange paid for while Erin rested with the boys on a nice swing right next to the propane.

We headed right back home and got to work on the toilet after lunch and the boys were down. I hacksawed of one of the rusty bolts. When we pulled the toilet Jaxson had not flushed one cup but two right before vacation. Erin had to use pliers to get them out of the trap. Erin began to clean up the area and run to Lowes (trip 3 of 3) to get new hard ware to replace the old rusted out bolts. I mowed the front yard and side hill.

 S-CupCaughtInToilet.jpg

I came back in and lowered it on and Erin tightened up and cleaned up the area The toilet is back in working and good to go. We only hope that is the last objects Jaxson seems deemed to flush.

Erin mowed the back yard while I got the boys up and played with them a bit. Erin then made phone calls to family and friends. Our friends Perry and Sue are nice enough to help me in a few weeks moving my Mom who will be moving from Doylestown to New Hope and into a much nicer Semi-Retirement community. Noah and I will due the bulk work but I needed an extra driver to get vehicles around. Erin will stay home with the boys and Mom has given us a dresser and a couple of beds we will use for Jaxson. I should be able to bring them down in an empty van.

I also got a call from the president of the football league and all is a go for Liam to play flag football this fall. I signed him up on line and he is very excited. We both got on the computer and watched movies and looked at pictures of other boys his age playing the game. It will be a big commitment of time for a couple of months. He will practice three days a week. Erin is researching how best to make sure we all get fed and not fast food.

Liam will probably have to eat some before practice and a little after. We will give it a shot one season and see how much he really enjoys it. If he likes it we will continue and if not we will move onto something else next year.

 S-GardenShotMidJuly2008.jpg

I put some new enriched dirt down around my corn and hoed and weeded the area. The stalks are getting big but no sign of corn in there yet. Erin’s beans will need picking this week before the Wednesday surgery.

Sunday night we watched tv a little and headed off.

Erin has shoulder surgery on Wednesday so we will be off Wednesday. Our friend Sue is going to watch the kids in the early evening for us until I can get Erin home and settled. I will be leaving early to get the kids from daycare later in the week. We do not have anything planned next weekend on purpose. The following weekend we will have our family portraits done as well as possibly need to get Liam’s football jersey.

The week after that I head to Pennsylvania to move Mom and Liam starts his first practice.

On Friday, I worked half a day, and then left so that Jaxson could have a little Birthday party at Daycare.

S-JaxsonTurns2DayCareParty-BlowingOutCandle.jpg S-JaxsonTurns2DayCareParty-HappyBDayJax.jpg

It was kind of nice not having to rush on Saturday morning. Of course, I was up with the boys, but it allowed me time to finalize packing, and start loading the van. It also allowed us to get some coffee and a spot of breakfast before heading North to "Home Home." We got on the road about 9:30. We didn't want to start much earlier than that anyway, because then we'd hit the Seafood place before it opened at 11:00. Had to get some CRABS!!

The trip wasn't too bad. Long, as usual, but with a couple of movies, easy access to toys, and some books on CD, we made it in time for dinner. I called right about the time we got to town, so Dad got the water heating for the crabs. It was pretty nice just pulling in the driveway and dumping the crabs in the pot. Once we got sorted out, the boys had a great time playing with Aunt Dawn and Grandma.

S-HomeHomeJuly2008-CrabFeast.jpg

That evening we just chatted amidst picking crabs, and then watched a little tv after the kids went to bed. Liam got to stay up so he could go sleep in Doc's camper with Aunt Dawn.

It was nice to be able to sleep in a little bit on Sunday. Lucky for us that Jax is a late sleeper too, but I know that Liam had Dawn up early. Once we did venture upstairs, we had a little breakfast, and then Dawn, Dad, the boys and I went for a walk with the dogs. We crossed the crick, went around the flat, up by Charlotte's and then back down around by the Rowe barn. On the return trip across the crick, the boys got to take a dip in the wading spot. Liam was very thrilled to dive right in as Dawn and I laughed. He's a true pices, for sure! I let them splash around a bit with Aunt Dawn while I headed back up to the house.

Once the boys got into some dry clothes, we introduced Dawn to the WiiFit. It was pretty funny watching her do the balance games. Dad, too, gave it a try. After lunch, Russ and I decided to head into town to get a few groceries and some cleaning supplies for the farm house. The tenents were nearly moved out, but we new we had some serious cleaning ahead. I was more than happy to supply plenty of bleach, masks, and rubber gloves.

After dinner that evening, we went down to Middlebury to get some ice cream. The line wasn't too long, and we enjoyed a spot at a picnic table. We ran into some folks we knew, so we had a nice conversation while trying to guide ice cream into the boys' mouths, instead of all over each other! Liam had strawberry, and Jax enjoyed some Rainbow Sherbet. It was so cute. Of course, getting them wound down for bed once we got home was another challenge!

S-HomeHomeJuly2008-IceCreamTime-Yummy.jpg S-HomeHomeJuly2008-IceCreamTime-LiamJaxEnjoy.jpg

We knew that Monday was the last day for the tenents to move out of the farm house. There wasn't much we could get started on anyway until they were officially OUT of there, so we decided to make a trip to South Williamsport to Reptileland! We passed by this place on almost every trip, and just wanted to wait until the boys got a little older before taking them. Monday was the perfect opportunity, and we were happy to have Aunt Dawn come along too. We had a really nice day. We all especially enjoyed the tortoises. We got home in time to make some steaks for dinner. After dinner, we shared a slide show of the pics of the day on the Wii, and all had a nice evening.

Tuesday, July 1st, was Jaxson's birthday. We planned to clean up at the farm house for a little bit, but wanted to have a nice birthday dinner for Jaxson later that evening. Dawn pitched right in the kitchen, and I went to work scrubbing the bathroom. It was literally a top to bottom effort. Every once in a while we took a break from scrubbing to just pitch stuff in the big dumpster that Dad had delivered. It didn't take long to nearly fill it. Russ stayed down home with Mom to keep an eye on the kids, and wrap a few presents for Jaxson. He also worked on a photo program on the computer for Dad.

About 3:30 I left Dawn and went back down home to get the oil frying for the turkey. Dad came down soon after, and sat with Russ while the oil came up to temperature, and Mom and I got the table decorated for Jaxson's little birthday party. I also put the sand in the sandbox, and the boys had a grand time sifting through it while we dropped in the turkey. Dawn came down right before the turkey was done. We happily carved it up and sat down to a yummy birthday dinner. Then, we let Jaxson put on his birthday shirt, and brought out the Bob the Builder cake. Once we'd all had a slice (or two) we let Jax open his presents. He got a lot of Bob stuff, and quite a few buses, since he seems to have a thing for them lately. He really enjoyed himself. Big brother, Liam was fairly patient, but did have a few moments requiring slight reprimand. It's tough giving up the spotlight every once in a while. We think he was sincerely happy for his brother though, and that was pretty cute.

S-HomeHomeJuly2008-JaxBDayParty-BirthdayBoy.jpg S-HomeHomeJuly2008-JaxBDayParty-JaxGrammaWithCake.jpg S-HomeHomeJuly2008-JaxBusPuzzle.jpg S-HomeHomeJuly2008-JaxBDayParty-JaxBuses.jpg

The party was fun, but we really wanted to get the boys settled down in bed before 8:00 because Russ and I especially wanted to watch Deadliest Catch. Russ helped bathe the kids, and we both helped read stories and tuck the kids in. I only missed the first few minutes of the show. I tried to watch through to the part where the boat captains interview at 10:00, but my eyelids just wouldn't let me.

Wednesday morning was a day off from cleaning. Dawn went to Stoney Fork to her friend, Sue's, campground, and Russ and I decided to go out to lunch, and do a little geocaching. It gave us some time to touch base with each other, and get out in the mountains a little. Kate also rented a car and Dad picked her up in Elmira, so she arrived mid-morning as well to help Mom with the boys while Russ and I had our "date."

We only hit three caches before dinner time, but boy…. What stories we now have to tell! The first cache wasn't so bad. We actually set out to find one in particular, but then found that we were closer to one we'd previously given up on. So, our first find of the day, "Wanna take a Leek" proved fairly easy. It was out past the Butler Farm, and nestled near a stream. Very pretty, and a nicely stocked cache. Russ then had a hunch where we went wrong initially, and soon we were going up Baldwin Run to find the Plantation Trail caches. We found ourselves near an old Fire Tower site, and were happy to easily locate the geocache as well. We took our time meandering back down the path, and enjoyed the scenic Mountain Laurel. We made a right at the fork in the trail, knowing that we'd be heading for the second in this series. About 30 yards down the trail, in a small clearing, I noticed a bear trap. I said, "Hey, there's a bear trap." I didn't think much of it, because it looked like it was empty. I was just about to walk past it, when I looked to my right and saw…. A bear! Now, grant it, it wasn't an especially large bear. My first instinct was to turn and run, but I just took an "about face" and took rather large brisk steps past Russ as I said, "TURN AROUND AND KEEP WALKING." At that point, Russ, looked to where I'd been and happened to notice said bear take a couple of leaps toward us. So, we went another few yards, and then stopped when he turned around and went back up into the Mountain Laurel.

S-Find472-PlantationTrailOldFiretowerBearTrap.jpg

So though our hearts were pounding a little, we had to make a decision. Either call it quits and head back to the van, or muster up some courage, pass the bear trap, and continue on to the second cache location. So I shouted, "Go Away, Bear" and we took a few ginger, but steady paces past the bear trap. We continued on up the trail, only stopping to find a couple of threatening walking sticks. It didn't help our nerves any to flush a half dozen grouse in the middle of the trail either. Nonetheless, we made it to ground zero and began searching for the cache. It was tough because we couldn't help searching for bear either. Finally, after consulting the hint, we found the cache. We sad down on a log to sign in the log book and heave a sigh of relief. We made some bear-able comments, and then Russ said, "I keep hearing that rustling noise again!" At those words I glanced to my left, only to see a bear…. AGAIN! So we grabbed our cache stuff and stepped back a few feet this time…. Getting braver, I guess. Russ tried to snag a picture, but the bear's black fur just blended in with the tree shadows. Finally, we quickly returned the cache to it's hiding location, and decided to nix the third cache on the trail, and head back to the van while we still could. We didn't know if it was the same bear (I swear the second one looked bigger) or another one, but we knew that being around a bear trap wasn't the best of positions to be in.

S-Find473-PlantationTrailAStopAlongTheTrail-BearInWoods.jpg

Needless to say, we were happy to get back home with eager stories to tell. It was nice having dinner together with both Kate and Dawn, and we tried not to tell our bear story over and over… but it was hard. After dinner, Uncle Wally and Aunt Pat came over, so we spent some time visiting in the living room before I sent the kids to the bathtub to get ready for bed. It was another eventful day, and Russ and I were grateful for the chance to spend some it together.

Thursday was get-down-to-business day at the farm house. Kate had helped Dawn Wednesday afternoon while Russ and I were wrestling with bears. Russ and I agreed to take any cats caught up to the pound. We took Jaxson with us, since Liam wanted to stay with Grandma and play with his new Indiana Jones figure that Aunt Dawn had given him. Unfortunately, the pound didn't open until 11:30, so we needed to kill a little time. Thankfully, the cats were in an airline carrier, so the van was relatively safe from unpleasent stains. The poor Momma cat was due to pop out kittens at any time. We felt bad about taking them to the pound, but I'd called a couple different no-kill rescues, but they were full. It's that time of year, when cats and kittens are in surplus. While we waited for the pound to open, Russ, Jax and I meandered up to the used book store, and then over to the candy shop. Then we got a few more groceries at Weis before dropping off the three cats.

S-HomeHomeJuly2008-JaxAtFarmhouse.jpg

Then we got back home, and had some lunch. The boys went down for some nap time, and Russ and I went up to the farm to relieve Dawn and Kate so they could come down for lunch. Russ and I went to work cleaning out the attic. It was a big job, but was probably the first time in 100 years that it'd been cleaned, so it was well worth doing. Then Russ took a turn cleaning the bathtub with the CLR that we'd bought at the store… but it didn't help the gross stains much. Later, Dawn and Kate returned with Liam. Russ went back down to the house to shoot clays with Dad and some of his friends. Dawn and I started hoeing out the basement, and Kate finished up the attic with the shopvac. Then we sorted through some of the attic stuff before calling it a day and heading back down home for dinner.

Our cousin, Lori, had stopped by to visit, so I chatted with her a bit before making a beeline to the shower. We had leftovers for dinner, and had just planted ourselves in the living room, when Walt Owlett stopped by and chatted with us about their road trip to California. It was good to see him, and I always find it endearing the way folks "just drop in and set a spell." You just don't find that much anymore.

Friday was another day off from cleaning. Dawn went up for a few hours, but Kate and I stayed down home to help get things ready for a picnic at Ives Run later that afternoon. Rich arrived right around lunchtime too. Dawn had found a bunch of berries left up in the freezer up at the farm, so Mom made some biscuits for Strawberry Shortcake. Kate made a Maccaroni salad, and Mom also worked on a potato salad.

After the boys' nap, Russ, Dawn, the boys and I headed over to Ives Run. I wanted to go a little early, so the boys could have some time swimming in the lake. That was great fun, but I had to get my suit on too, because Liam was all too happy to wade out up to his neck. Then we let them go over and play on the playground for a bit after we'd set up the table that Russ and Dad had claimed earlier that morning.

As dinnertime approached, Mom, Dad, Kate and Rich arrived. We set up the croquet set and had a grand time figureing out (or making up) the rules. After a competitive game, Barry and Willie arrived, and after some Taco dip, we commenced to playing round two with Barry. It was another neck and neck game and it was great fun.

S-HomeHomeJuly2008-Fireworks-Croquet-AuntKateHelpsLiam.jpg

Then we all sat down together for some burgers and the tastely picnic fare. Just as we were ready for dessert, Denny, Joan, their daughter, Charity, and her Boyfriend, Matt, arrived… with PIES. Kate, Rich, Dawn and the boys went back down to the water, as I gorged on Shortcake and Charity's blueberry pie. The evening was especially nice, and we all found the company relaxing.

Finally, the boys' were getting played out and were ready to settle down on laps and under blankets to watch the fireworks. The fireworks are especially awesome at the lake because the explosions echo off the mountains for a extra climactic effect. We were lucky to avoid rain, and even packing up to go home after the show was easy and quick. They really have fine tuned that event to make it enjoyable for the entire county. Just can't beat it. Both boys were asleep in the van before we got home.

Saturday it was time to pack the van and head home. It had been a nice visit. Sure, there were some tense times, and I know that Mom needed a few extra prayers because her shoulder is still bothering her. We aren't sure what will become of the farmhouse now. It's empty pretty much, and getting as clean as we figured we could get it in the short time allowed. There are curtains in the windows and a dumpter has been filled and hauled away. Dad thinks it be good to get another one to get rid of stuff out of the barns too. Still, the house needs an incredible amount of work and money. There is extensive water damage, but now that there's a new roof, it shouldn't get worse. The porches are also in a sad state, and really should be completely redone. Not to mention that the floor is still uneven, suggesting that the foundation should probably be investigated and jacked up. Of couse, that would mean the plaster walls would need to be replaced too. Every room needs major attention. It's sad, but at least something was done. It seems us kids are just not ready to throw in the towel on the old girl yet. We found a document that said it was a century farm back in 1975, so the history just might be the best value to begin with. I understand the plan now is to just secure it and close it up. Some decisions will need to be made, but at this point, it's just a cleaner emptier house.

Our trip home was long, but the boys (and me) slept a lot of the way. I was glad that we headed home on Saturday. It was nice having yesterday to recoup a little. I got things put away, some laundry done, and even took the dogs to the dog park for a run. Now, we're back to work/daycare and trying to get things back to normal. I was telling Russ, that I really don't quite know what normal is anymore. It seems we always have some sort of challenge to face, but I guess that's just the way life is. I suppose it'd be pretty boring otherwise. Next week, I get my shoulder carved on a little too. Like Mom, I have some bone spurs that have to go, but unlike Mom, I have no tears, so I'm hoping my recovery will be reasonable. Then in August, we'll be moving Russ's mom out of her apartment in Doylestown to a more modern one in New Hope. Then our friend, Paul, is getting married in September. Maybe the fall will bring "normal" again.
