UPDATE
I'm proud to announce I've begun an exciting new endeavor. I'm writing a weekly crime and
justice newspaper column. I've also begun an association with The Huffington Post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/diane-dimond/ where you can become a Dimond fan, leave a comment or start some buzz about my work.
You can also find all the columns right here.
My column first began appearing in the Albuquerque Journal - the hometown newspaper I grew
up reading. The Journal and its wonderful editor, Kent Walz, launched the Saturday column with a splash, including above-the-mastehead
headshots which guided readers to their newest Op-Ed columnist - Me!
The idea behind the weekly offering is not to rehash the crime du jour (although I might
throw in my two cents worth!) rather, the column centers on big-issue crime themes that affect American's daily lives.
I also hope to shed real light on parts of the criminal justice system you may not be aware of.
Content changes weekly so check back often and pass this link on to all your friends!

When Parents Go to Prison Children Are Punished Too
I was there as police conducted an early morning drug
bust raid. Mom and Dad were arrested - but that left two completely terrified children behind. What becomes
of them?

Rest In Peace, Patsy Abq Journal Huffington Post
Patsy Ramsey is looking down
from the heavens she always prayed to with her trademark beauty pageant smile. Standing
next to her is her beautiful daughter, Jon Benet Ramsey. They are benevolent
but still wagging a finger of “I-told-you-so” at all of us.

Just because a person's in prison doesn't mean they will have to go without
their street drugs. So how do they get the drugs past security? Sometimes it is dishonest prison guards
... but that ain't all!

Would some legislator in the state of Texas PLEASE figure out how to write a new law that protects
children like those who were trapped at the FLDS compound?
The state's highest court shrugs its black-robed shoulders and says there's nothing it can do!

TV Legal Pundits In Training - Albuq. Journal
You’ll never guess what they’re
teaching in law schools these days.
They’re teaching ripped from
the TV plot lines – and the art of TV punditry.
I bet its happening across the
country but I’ll stick to what I know first hand.
Every year I address students
at New
York Law School
for a class called, ‘Advocacy, media and the big case: Intersection of media and the law.’
The course designer, Professor Lis Wiehl, knows of what she speaks.

The Childhood Home

but it is about life and death.
For 18 months I’ve put it off. I mean, what do you do with a childhood house full of memories after you lose both
your parents?

Calling All Feminists - Say Something!!
Ok, so I just checked the official website of the National Organization for Women.
Not a word about the Elliott Spitzer sex scandal and resignation. The lead story of their “Hot Topics” news section
is a week old fluff piece about Hillary Clinton’s primary wins in Ohio and Texas.
And I guess we won’t be hearing from, Marcia Pappas, the President of the New York Chapter of NOW either. She’s the one I recently wrote about who immediately and fiercely jumped on Senator Ted Kennedy for endorsing Barack Obama for President. By denying Hillary the nod, Marcia declared, Teddy K. had committed the “ultimate betrayal” of all women. Funny, Marcia didn’t seem to remember the Massachusetts
senator walking away from a sinking car in a place called Chappaquiddick as a more important “betrayal” of a woman – but I
digress.
It’s as if these feminists don’t think the Spitzer issue affects women!

Crime And The Candidates
Why isn’t there a hue and cry across
the land about the crime rate in this country?
If true leadership starts at the
top why aren’t any of the presidential candidates talking about crime in America? Why aren’t any of them proposing
an anti-crime plan along with their Iraq
package, their health care ideas and their Social Security solutions? It
is something that affects all of us every single day - and its getting worse.

The
Ticking Time Bomb Next Door
“The
deranged walk among us – they always have.”
I wrote
that after the inexplicable shooting at the University of Illinois
last week in which six innocent people were killed and 23 wounded. No one seemed
to see it coming when 27 year old Steve Kazmierczak, a “personable and friendly” award winning student, walked in to a lecture
hall and started shooting. Now we learn he had been institutionalized by his
parents for violent behavior.
I’ve
been thinking. How many Kazmierczaks are out there?
