Today is just a little over a week since Amanda’s journey ended. She truly put up a valiant fight every step of the way. While we worked very hard to paint a positive and hopeful picture of Amanda’s struggle, there was a lot of heartache for both Amanda and her family along the way. While we miss her terribly, we are grateful for her that her daily struggle is over and that she is in a better, more peaceful and more fair place.

We want to thank all of you for the tremendous support and prayers over the past week. There were more than 400 people who paid there respects to all of us in Amanda’s family during only two visitations on Tuesday and her funeral service on Wednesday. In 16 years of life, I’d say that Amanda truly had an impact on many people and she would have loved the attention and outpouring of love that was there on her behalf. All of the baskets, the cards and the inspirational messages have been overwhelming.

We also wish to thank those of you who followed Amanda’s story on her website and took the time to write to her and offer your well wishes and positive thoughts. While she wasn’t able to check her own computer over the past year, she looked forward to hearing the most recent posts and was happy to see when there was someone new who took the time to think about her and write her a note.

It will be a new journey ahead for all who loved Amanda. Getting used to life and our home without her will take a lot of getting used to, particularly for her brother Michael and her sister Gabi who were greeted every day with a smile from their sister, no matter what her day looked like. She was truly an angel on earth and now we hope she is watching over all of us.

We hope that will all of the contributions in Amanda’s name will go toward a possible cure so that no other family will need to create another website like this one.  We will keep the website up for a while so that others can post their thoughts and well wishes.

Wishing you all health, happiness and the ability to count your blessings and stay positive in Amanda’s memory.

With love,

Amanda’s Family

June 8, 2008
Wow! It's been almost 3 months since we've updated the site! The truth is that we've been busy, and there hasn't been too much to report.

On the "Amanda" front....all is status quo from the health stand point. Amanda continues to get up each morning with a positive attitude and goes along with her daily routine no matter what the day holds.

Amanda looks forward to her teachers coming for home instruction twice a week, and we just learned that South Brunswick High School finally found Amanda a math teacher to help her finish up her Junior math. Despite everyone's efforts, it has been very difficult for the school to secure the right teachers for Amanda's home instruction. We appreciate their efforts and are looking forward to Amanda getting her time in and being able to say she made it through Junior Year! Unfortunately and Fortunately, Amanda will receive home instruction over the summer to remain caught up with her grade. The unfortunate is obvious, the fortunate is because Amanda looks forward to company and at this point, her teachers are providing her with a smiling face and some sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

On the family front, Amanda's sister Gabi got her "adenoids" out in late May, and next week, Amanda's brother MIchael will be getting his tonsils out! We hope Michael's recovery is as smooth as Gabi's was.

On another note, Amanda's father, Mike, is retiring at the end of June after 25 years working for the Weehawken Police Department. Due to our coverage issues here at home, Mike has not been able to go to work for the past 12 months and his "brothers and sisters" on the police force have donated days, worked shifts, and just been incredibly supportive of our plight. Also, Mayor Turner granted Mike the time he needed to get to retirement without having to return to work. It's bittersweet for Mike, but he will be returning to work this summer as a "Division Leader" for the local day camp, which Gabi will be attending.

We have had some challenges with our Visiting Nurses Team (VNA) and unfortunately their "red tape" has interfered with our daily routine here. Suddenly, they are no longer able to lift Amanda or assist Amanda with her medication as they did in the past. This has caused quite a bit of turmoil here and this summer we will need to adjust Glori's work schedule to accomodate these newly enforced rules. Fortunately, Amanda does received quality care from her team, so we're trying to cope with the changes the best that we can.

Amanda still faces a long hot summer ahead, and really looks forward to visitors. PLEASE DON'T HESITATE to call or come by. It is NEVER an INCONVENIENCE. She loves company!

Until next time.....stay cool and have a nice summer.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda had a nice time in Florida, despite some unfortunate travel challenges! We had to get Amanda up extra early on the travel days, so she was very exhausted to begin with, but Liberty (Newark) airport left a little to be desired in the disability- friendly area. We experienced a very rude porter and reservationist, but that was combatted with some very kind and helpful staff. Probably the most notable problem was that the transfer chair used to put Amanda on the airplane had a faulty wheel and she literally fell out of the chair and hit her head on the outside of the airplane. We're not positive, but pretty sure that she had a minor concussion and seems to have lost her recollection of that flight to Florida. She slept from the time we got to the hotel at dinner time through the next morning! She lagged a bit at Magic Kingdom, but that was "Gabi's day" anyway. We all made it through the "Princess Breakfast" at Cinderella's Castle.  Amanda did her best not to be annoyed by the princesses fluttering about her while they posed for photos with Gabi.

Wednesday we rested and shopped at the outlet stores next to the hotel and ordered in chinese food.

On Thursday, it was Amanda's day and we went to Sea World.  Finally on our second visit to Sea World, Amanda touched a dolphin! It was quite the site and we have pictures to prove it! (See the photo page). The rest of the day was good, but Amanda tires easily, so we avoided doing too much. Fortunately, when Amanda was ready to go back to the hotel, Gabi was asleep in the stroller and the wind had kicked up making it too cold to continue anyway.

The way back home went very smoothly and thanks to our friend Woody Bodtman who works for Continental in Newark (and personally assisted us on Friday), we had a much smoother transition off the plane than on the way in.

Actually, thanks to Woody, we were able to get great seats on both flights. And thanks to a very wonderful reservationist in Orlando, (and my big mouth) Amanda and Mike were able to travel First Class on the way home.

You would think that Amanda would have been tired following this trip, but she returned to her normal routine at home as if she didn't miss a beat, so we're grateful that the trip didn't wipe her out.

On another note, we FINALLY have some more pictures from Amanda's Sweet 16 party! Some day, we will meet up with the photographer and get the rest of the pictures and a photo album! I want to be sure we say thanks to Aunt Pam and Uncle Gary for sharing the expenses of Amanda's Sweet 16 party. Amanda (and we) are very grateful!

See Amanda's photo album for pictures of her party and of our trip to Orlando.

Otherwise, Amanda has been developing some new friendships on the home front and her new friend Casey has been by to visit pretty often, and together they are working on making a scrap book of vacation pics.

That's about it for now. More to come soon! Be sure to sign Amanda's guest book or visit her carepage at www.carepages.com and go to Amanda's Place to sign her page there.

Happy Spring!
Love,
Amanda's Family

February 20, 2008 11:12pm

I'm falling a bit behind in keeping Amanda's site updated.  I apologize to those of you who check back regularly.

Amanda is doing well. Nothing too new to report in terms of her health. While she has been sleeping more hours, she has been sleeping better and more so through the night (it's been a good thing for all of us!). She seems brighter during the day and well rested.

She has continued her home schooling and will be adding math to her home instruction schedule. Now she has English, Math and History, each once a week. There is talk of an art elective project coming up soon also, which Amanda may work on with her new friend Casey.  We'll keep you posted on that one!  While we're on the topic of school, Amanda's history teacher told us tonight that Amanda has met the requirements to join the History Honor Society at South Brunswick High School because she has maintained a 3.5 gpa overall and has an "A" average on all of her history classes. Amanda was very pleased to hear this, along with the fact that she got an 88% on her history test she was given today.

The most exciting thing to report is that we plan to take a mini vacation to Florida in less than 2 weeks. We will be making a stop at Magic Kingdom for Gabi and a stop at Sea World at Amanda's request. We're hoping that the flight will go as smooth as possible and that Amanda will have an amazing time!

If you haven't already, please sign up at www.caregpages.com and visit Amanda's Care Page at AmandasPlace . Once you register, you will get an email each time I update her site so you don't have to check back until there is something new.

Please make sure you sign Amanda's guest book whenever you stop by. She really looks forward to hearing from those who care about her.

Wishing you all well and we'll update you when we get back from Florida!!

Happy New Year!
Amanda had a nice Christmas and had a chance to see everybody.

She received lots of great gifts from everyone for Christmas. She even had a chance to cash in one of her gifts today.  We took Amanda and Tara to see Grease on Broadway. The girls had a great time at lunch and really enjoyed the show from their orchestra seats. It wouldn't be "Amanda style" if there weren't a personal meet and greet following the show, so we were able to arrange for Amanda and Tara to meet Laura Osnes (Sandy) and Max Crum (Danny) after the show. Click here to see one of the pictures. They were both extremely gracious and such warm people. Amanda was really excited because she watched the show "Grease, You're the One That I Want" and was a fan of both of them.

Amanda also had a chance to get out a couple of times this month to see some movies and out to dinner.

She enjoyed New Year's Eve at the Kendall Park Roller Rink where neighborhood friends sponsored a party. Amanda wheeled around the rink with her father and sister and really seemed to enjoy herself. We later came home to watch the ball drop with family and some friends.

Amanda continues to have a couple of home school classes each week, but it was a bit slow during the holidays. She has requested that we add another class this semester so that she can stay as caught up as possible with her Junior year.

It was nice to have visitors during the holiday season. Amanda really enjoys having family and friends come see her. Just because the holidays are over, we are still happy to have visitors, so please let us know if you'd like to stop by.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2008!

Amanda's Family

We'll keep it short and sweet....
Amanda enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving in Weehawken with her Aunt, Uncle, Cousins and Grandparents. She got to enjoy many of her favorite holiday dishes!

She has been doing okay otherwise, still struggling with managing her pain, but we keep trying. As always, Amanda gets through each day amazing us all with her strength and incredible attitude.

With Christmas and the New Year arriving, we are counting our blessings to have Amanda in our lives.  With the cold weather, however, Amanda isn't getting out that much and it gets really lonely around here...particularly for a spunky 16 year old. Please remember Amanda during the holidays and don't hesitate to give us a call or send us an email if you'd like to stop by and pay a visit. She's been struggling with her speech, but has no problem letting you know what's on her mind, and is always a captive audience.

We hope to see you soon. There is an open invite to all who wish to come. We just ask that you let us know you're on your way (email or phone will do!).

Wishing you all a Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year!!

Love,
Amanda's Family

My apologies for not writing an update sooner. It's been a bit hectic around here. October was a very busy month for Amanda and the rest of us.

As you know, Amanda started school in September. She was (and always is) amazing! She went every day for the fourth block for almost a month. Unfortunately, it did become too much for her. At the same time that we were trying out adding an additional hour of academics at school, we were experimenting with new pain medications for Amanda (with medical supervision, of course:).  The medications were far too hard on Amanda's system and we had some major scares around here in mid-October. Amanda was in bed for more than 3 days almost continuously, until we began weaning her off of the pain meds that put her in this situation.

The good news is that what looked like a very gloomy situation for Amanda turned out to be a relief and less related to her condition and more about the medication. The hard part was that following this mini-crisis, Amanda opted to discontinue going to school. She will, however, continue her home-schooling here.  The other down side to this situation is that this long acting pain medication did not work for Amanda (or worked so well, it knocked her out!).  Our daily struggle now is to find what combination of pain medications releive some of her pain.  Amanda's condition causes her to loose muscle mass, and therefore she has several areas of her body that really hurt her, most of the time. Needless to say, she continues to be a trooper, but it's been hard to watch her be so uncomfortable.

While Amanda recovered from this medication crisis, we continued to plan her Sweet 16 party! The party was amazing and was at Charlie Brown's on Amanda's Birthday. One week later, Amanda celebrated again at the Olive Garden (her choice) with her Weehawken family! She got some wonderful gifts and has great pictures for memories.

Speaking of pictures, I'll get them up on the website as soon as possible! Please check back daily as I should have them up very soon!

Please keep Amanda in your prayers, as we know you always do. We are praying for a mild winter and for little to no pain for Amanda!

Stay warm and Happy Thanksgiving!
Love,
Amanda's Family

On September 17th, Amanda returned to school after being away for almost one year. She returned on a part time basis, attending one class per day, accounting for two classes total...history and english. Although we don't hear too much from Amanda, we have heard that she is busy and involved in class. Most importantly, she gets OUT OF THIS HOUSE!! And if you ask her, that's probably the best part!

Tomorrow, she will start having additional instruction in math and then adding an elective very soon at school after her class. The one class per day is wiping her out, but since she wants to get through all of her classes, we are trying this plan out on a trial basis. South Brunswick High School has been amazing every step of the way. They are so willing to try and revise things as often as need be to benefit Amanda. We have truly been blessed to have such an amazing district, school and quite frankly, an amazing community!

Speaking of which, the Dardani's (the one's who do the haunted trail every year in South Brunswick) have put together a new event this year. It's called "Skull Riders...chrome for a cure, annual biketoberfest". The person they are riding for this year is Amanda. It's on Halloween at 9:00pm. There are over 100 motorcycle riders already signed up. For more information, contact us through Amanda's email and we'll give you the information.

In 19 days, Amanda will be turning "Sweet 16". She has lots of festivities planned for her birthday and you can keep an eye out for updates and pictures from her birthday celebrations.

Three days after Amanda turns 16, we remember when the worst part of this nightmare began, and we are grateful to have Amanda in our lives, and to be able to talk about good things to come.

All our best to all of you,
Love,
Amanda's Family

September 12, 2007  12:35am
Summer is finally over and Amanda is looking forward to wearing some of her new clothes as it gets cooler outside. We'll all welcome a breeze and the fall air!

Amanda's official date to return to school is Monday, September 17th. She will start off by going for one class each day from 1:00 - 2:30. She'll try it out for a week or so and then make any adjustments to her schedule depending on how she feels and how things go overall. We're just so happy that she'll be able to get to the high school to reconnect with her friends and teachers from SBHS. Apparently everyone's been asking for her, so she's looking forward to getting back to school. She's hoping that all of her fellow students will say hello and welcome her back. Hopefully she can dodge lots of questions by referring people to her website for more information. She's dreading the questions, so spread the word if you go to school with Amanda.

We finished Amanda's technology evaluation yesterday with Mike from CP of NJ. It's very exciting! We found out that Amanda's wheelchair is compatible with a computerized system that will allow her to turn on lights, the tv, and her computer, as well as control her computer from the joystick on her chair. She will have so much more control and independence once this system is in place. Also, Mike recommended a word recognition program to install on her computer that will help her speed up her typing by being able to select the word she wants to type without having to type it all out herself. Technology is amazing.

We also went to see Dr. Cheng at Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside. What a nice doctor! He ordered Amanda a new back for her wheelchair (which she got a temporary one today and WOW, what a difference it made in her comfort!!!), and he ordered some other devices to help with her feet which will make her more comfortable.  He also suggested new medication to help alleviate some of the pain that she was feeling, and so far, so good. It's nice when we have a successful appointment that results in Amanda's increased comfort, and ultimately her quality of life overall.

This month, Amanda, Tara and Christa stayed at the Holiday Inn in Princeton for a "girl's night out". They saw "Superbad" at the movies and had dinner at the hotel. They hung out and had a nice night away from adults! We're hoping to have one of these for Amanda once every few months. Christa has been amazing and we're very grateful that she has come into our lives!

I think that's about it for now. It will be an exciting and exhausting month, but we're looking forward to it. Amanda starts her junior year of high school, her big brother Michael started college at Montclair State University and her baby sister Gabi started pre-school. Next month will be one year since this whole ordeal began, but more importantly, it will be Amanda's Sweet 16th Birthday. We are grateful to have her in our lives after so much turmoil and we count our blessings every day.

Wishing you all well.
Love,
Amanda's Family

August 10, 2007 11:58pm
It has been a quiet summer for Amanda. She's almost finished with her summer school and just got her report card! She still has some catching up to do in Geometry and Spanish so those were incompletes, but she got A's in Biology, English and History! She never ceases to amaze any of us. We're meeting next week with the school to figure out a plan to return to school on a part time basis. Amanda seems very anxious to start her Junior year with her fellow students, and we can't blame her.

We had a communication evaluation started today from CP of New Jersey. The goal is to help Amanda be as independent as she can be and to be able to use her computer as much as possible and comfortably. Right now it is very much a struggle for Amanda to type on her computer due to her lack of muscle strength and hand tremors. The evaluator made a lot of good suggestions to help make Amanda more comfortable at the computer and which will hopefully help her type more. He'll be back for further evaluation, and we're looking forward to more ideas that will help.

Amanda has utlized Christa and Lindsey a few times (as her new staff!) and that seems to be working out quite well. She is planning a night out with one of the girls and Tara before school starts. I think she needs a few nights without parents!!!

Amanda enjoyed taking Tara to see Rent this week for an early birthday present. The girls got a chance to meet all of the lead actors, got all of their autographs and a picture taken with most of them! Click here to see some of the pictures we took!

I apologize for not following up on the "time off" issue, but we wanted to make sure we recognized and thanked the Weehawken PBA and Mayor Richard Turner for their efforts in getting Mike additional time off.  Mike's co-workers were finally allowed to donate time to him.  It has been a tremendous help and we are so grateful to each of these people for their generosity and willingness to help our family.

Stay cool and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Love,
Amanda's Family

July 9, 2007 11:39pm

June was a quiet, but good month for Amanda. She saw a couple of movies, went shopping, had a couple of dinners out, went to her brothers' high school graduation and finally made it into her heated swimming pool!  It's gotten a bit hot lately so it seems to slow us all down a bit, so Amanda stays in the air conditioning on those days.

Despite summer being here, Amanda still has to meet with her teachers a few times during the week so that she can finish up the assignments to get her through to Junior year. Since she missed a few whole months of school, she is using the summer to get caught up.  She is done with her History class, and is almost done with Biology; and will continue to work on English, Geometry and Spanish. It is Amanda's goal to get back to South Brunswick High School this coming September for her Junior year. If all goes well, she will return for 2 or 3 blocks (each block is a class) a day as a starting point. Her determination is remarkable and we're so proud of her for what she has achieved and for her ability to remain positive and ambitious.

Amanda was particularly happy when she had the chance to hire her own staff this last week! Lindsey and Christa (friends of Charleen's) are both a great fit for Amanda. They're upbeat, fun and blend with Amanda perfectly! Amanda likes and trusts them both, which we all consider a blessing and hard to find.  She's entitled to a break from her family taking care of her once in a while and we felt that this would be good for everyone. Amanda seems to enjoy having the girls around and Lindsey and Christa both seem to be inspired by Amanda already. It's hard not to be!

In the meantime, Amanda enjoys relaxing on her deck when it's not too hot out, and always welcomes company if you'd like to stop by (just give us a call!).

Enjoy the summer and stay cool!

Love,
Amanda's Family

June 8, 2007 11:20am

Everything is status quo for Amanda. She continues with home-schooling, takes a trip to the movies or out to dinner when we can and has been spending some more time online emailing or updating her myspace account. She spends time with Tara when possible and has weekly visits from Mom and periodic visits from her other MiMi and Pop.

Thank you to Weehawken High School for sponsoring Amanda during their annual talent show. Unfortunately Amanda wasn't able to make it to the event, but she was grateful that she is still so well thought of in her old home town. We all managed to make it to Weehawken for the Memorial Day Parade and Amanda got to see some of her old friends. It was a hot day, so we didn't stay too long, but it was a nice visit.

We learned this week that Charleen is moving back from Hawaii in July. She doesn't know this yet, but Amanda is planning another girls weekend for "the girls" at some point and Charleen is one of the girls! Amanda has missed Charleen so we're looking forward to her return.

MiMi Rosie continues to be a saving grace around here. She can single handedly care for most of Amanda's needs, Gabi's needs and help with household chores all at the same time. We have given her the next week or so off since she has been spending so much time here, but we couldn't be more grateful and we know she enjoys her time here too (we know you're reading this MiMi!).

We are in the process of scheduling an Assistive Technology evaluation- this would address computer access, reading and writing technology supports and accessibility for Amanda. We are excited about the possibility of Amanda being able to control more of her surroundings with the help of CP of NJ who will conduct the evaluation. We'll keep you posted on the outcome of that.

As for Amanda's siblings, Michael is getting ready for his high school graduation and then for college at Montclair State University; and Gabi is getting ready for the pre-school summer program starting in July. It's never a dull moment around here, that's for sure!

We hope that you are all staying cool and enjoying the summer!

Love,

The Callagy's

PS: (Check out some of Amanda's new pics in her photo album!)

May 10, 2007  10:10pm

Things have been relatively quiet around here, but never boring. Amanda suffered from a a minor virus last month, which was making its way through the house. She fought it like the trooper that she is, but not without a few scares for all of us along the way. Amanda has the will of a "rock" but unfortunately, her muscles are not as strong; including the muscles that help her cough, swallow and clear her airways. So something as simple as a little cough or cold can be very dangerous for Amanda.  We are just getting back to normal, but Amanda continues to be a bit more fatigued overall.

We have been trying to make some adjustments to her motorized wheelchair to accommodate the changes in her seating needs. She spends more time in bed so that her back and shoulders get the rest that they need until the chair is fixed. We are also working on getting an assisted technology assessment in our home through CP of NJ. The goal is to help Amanda be able to be more independent on her computer and throughout the house (including being able to turn things on and off with her chair controls) without having to depend on others for help.

Amanda's Dad returned to work in February. Since then, he has been working a steady graveyard shift, which has been challenging for all of us. Since Mike has no “time off” left, we are grateful to all of his "brothers and sisters" of PBA Local #15 who have so generously offered to donate a few of their days to Mike. This is a common practice in Police Departments throughout the state when one of the police officers is in a crisis situation and needs the time. Unfortunately, the Director of Public Safety has decided to dis-allow this practice in Weehawken.  We are hopeful that he will re-consider over time so that Mike can be here with us when things are a bit more challenging.

It's hard to understand how precious time is until you find yourself in a situation like this one.  Anyone who enters this house gains perspective about their own situation. To see what Amanda has to endure every single day and all of the dignity that she has had to give up, and yet she still continues to smile...I know for me personally, I usually forget about all of the challenges of my own day and realize how lucky I am and all that I take for granted. We hope that Amanda's struggle has enabled those of you who care about her to gain some valuable perspective about your own blessings.

In the meantime, we are very fortunate to have Amanda's MiMi Rosie here with us every other week to help us with our busy household. At 77 years old, MiMi can do more in a day than most people can do in a week. We are also so grateful for our Home Health Aide, Debbie from the VNA who spends several hours a day with Amanda. They have grown very fond of each other and are quite the dynamic duo!

Amanda is doing well with her home schooling and despite a few incompletes still, she is getting A's and B's in everything. Her teachers come for about one hour a week Monday through Thursday and they work her hard...because she's exhausted when they leave, but the activity is good for her mind, which is sharp as a tack!

Amanda has been getting out a bit more in the van and has taken a few trips to the mall with her brother Michael, which is always a special treat for both of them! We are hoping to find some way to give Amanda (and the rest of us) some type of summer break, but without vacation time for Mike, that may be difficult. We have set up the pool and are just waiting to find the right bathing suit to fit Amanda's needs and her good taste, of course!  MiMi Barbara is standing by waiting to place the order!

We hope that you are all doing well and staying cool. I will try to keep more current on the updates, but will at least make an entry on a monthly basis and more often if things change.

Love,
Amanda's Family

April 7, 2007  11:10pm

It's been a while since we posted an update and it's been pretty quiet in Amanda's Guestbook lately also. The good news is that it's because life is back to normal for Amanda and the rest of us (relatively speaking, of course). We have settled into a new routine and it seems to be working for all of us, most importantly for Amanda.

We keep telling her that she is a miraculous person and that she has really beat the odds in so many ways. She is shining star in this house and stays positive, appreciative (as appreciative as a 15 year old can be!) and has returned to her very active role in our family. She is the eyes and ears of this household. She knows who's coming and going, who called and when she tells her little sister "NO", you would think she was holding a whip by the reaction she gets! Gabi really adores and respects Amanda, and like any other big sister, Amanda loves telling Gabi what to do!

Since we got the new van, Amanda has been getting out a lot more often. There's a lot to consider and prepare to get Amanda up and dressed for an outing, and she has been asking to do this more and more, which says a lot for her outlook and priorities. For the first time, Amanda and her brother Michael went out alone in the van to see his job in Princeton and to the Quakerbridge Mall for clothes shopping. It was a very special outing for both of them.

Amanda recently got her computer modifications with the help of S.B. High School. She now has a giant ball on the top of her mouse that she can move around to move her cursor. She also has a big button that she pushes with her hand to "click". She has a program that she pulls up on the screen with an on-screen keyboard and that is how she types.  So, she is now on the computer more regularly. You can email her directly by clicking here. If you see her online and you want to "IM" her, she asks that you try to be patient. With her on-screen keyboard, it takes her a while to respond.

We recently had some minor medical concerns that caused us to pay a visit to Dr. Gallucci, the surgeon who saved Amanda's life just 5 months ago (everything was fine with the visit). We took a picture of the two of them and have added it to her photo album. To view this new picture and a few others, click here.

We hope that this update finds all of you well and that you have (or had) a Happy Easter and a Happy Passover.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Not much new to report except for Amanda's new found freedom in her new (used) van. Who would have thought that we would be trading our other van in that quickly, but we didn't know that we would need something so different so soon.

The van has a kneeling system (it lowers to the ground) and the back opens up with a ramp that Amanda drives right into. We lock her chair onto the floor, and off we go! Since we got the van last Wednesday, Amanda has been out to the movies, to dinner and to her little sister's Saturday dance class.  It really will allow Amanda to do a lot more than what she has been doing, and she is very happy about that!

We all survived Dad's first week back to work, although Amanda definitely missed him.

We hope that this update finds you all doing well and staying warm!

Love,
Amanda's Family

The girls had an amazing weekend! They arrived at the DoubleTree Hotel in Times Square on Friday afternoon. They spent a little time roaming the streets of New York City that evening, but it was really cold! They managed to get in a visit to the M&M Store though before turning in for the night! Every night up until 2:00am (quite the change from Amanda sleeping through the entire day, huh?!!).

They ate everything they wanted, Amanda bought everything she wanted, and everyone enjoyed Broadway's Chicago and Ma Ma Mia. Sardi's was an interesting treat, especially the dessert. Tara insisted on trying (or just seeing) Baked Alaska. The flame was a bit scary, but it was an interesting experience. The girls travelled on their own to the Olive Garden and claim to have eaten a feast!

The girls laughed a lot, rented movies, and were able to enjoy just being girls for the whole weekend. It was a really special time for Amanda, and she didn't want to leave when Monday rolled around.

It shouldn't come as a suprise though that she was exhausted for the rest of the week. She deserves the fun and now she needs the rest! Thank you to Dee and Tom from "Make-A-Wish" Foundation for helping Amanda figure out her WISH, and to Elyce from the Make-A-Wish office for making all the arrangements!

On the home front....Amanda's Dad Mike is finally going back to work next week. Amanda will continue to have the support of her home health aide, Debbie, from the Visiting Nurses (VNA) and she continues to be home schooled daily by her teachers from South Brunswick High School.

Wishing everyone a great weekend!

Amanda's Family

Just a quick update to let everyone know that Amanda is so excited about her "WISH" trip to NYC this coming weekend. She plans to see Chicago and MaMa Mia on Broadway, she is having her hair, make-up and nails done at a very trendy salon, and she plans to spend a full weekend "hanging out" with her best girlfriends, Tara and Charleen!

She has a few nice new outfits to sport in the city and she will be travelling in style in a fully accessible ramp van rented for her so that she can travel with ease throughout New York.

Pray for the snow and cold to be kind to the girls this weekend so that they can spend a little bit of time outside enjoying the sites of the Big Apple.

Keep an eye out for pictures that we'll post as soon as possible after their excursion is over! Have a great week and stay safe and warm!

Love,
Amanda's Family

The updates are getting less frequent because there really isn't too much news to report, only that Amanda's days are going well, which is what we all want to see.

She is still getting up each day in her chair, all day. She has her teachers from South Brunswick High School come Monday through Thursday afternoons to provide her with the schooling she needs to get through Sophomore year. She has been getting to see a movie every weekend for the past three weekends and even got out to the High School this past weekend for Acoustic Night put on by the Unplugged Club. We all had a good time and the bands were great! Amanda was particularly happy to see a lot of kids that she hasn't seen in a long time. She has been talking about how she can't wait to return to school. Although she still has some more healing to do, we are looking forward to that time also.

We are working on finding a new van that we can trade ours for so that Amanda can ride in it directly in her motorized chair and get around more comfortably and hopefully get out of the house more than once a week.

Other than that, we have no major news, which is good news. We hear often that people check the website regularly to see how Amanda is doing, which is why we continue to update it. We're trying to get Amanda to connect a little more on her own by using her  computer again to whatever degree she can. Feel free to write to Amanda either through her "guestbook" or directly to her via private email at amandabcallagy@aol.com where hopefully you will get a reply!

Amanda is sitting here with me helping me do her update for the first time. She is finally catching up on seeing all of your comments and we may do some adjustments to the site based on her input.

This past weekend was another eventful one. We took the gang to see "Happy Feet" at the movies and they all loved it! Amanda made it through the night without a hitch (and shared plenty of nachos and Sour Patch Kids with Tara...and Gabi too!)

Amanda's school routine has been going well, since she's no longer excited about homework, we know she is really back to her old self!  She takes full advantage of her brother to help her out. We tease him that at least now he has some homework to do! (Senior year has been good to him in the homework area).

Amanda is looking forward to her "Wish" trip in the upcoming weeks and although the arrangements are still being made, it sounds like it will be a weekend to remember! We will surely post pictures after the weekend is over.

As always, we want to thank you for your prayers, well wishes and support, and Amanda says THANK YOU, too!

Every day, we are seeing more and more of the Amanda we all know and love. The truth is that Amanda has come to a place in her recovery from this "crisis" that none of us thought was possible. Each week she surprises us and herself with what she can do.  For those of you who knew where Amanda was before this crisis, it is fair to say that she is at about 75% back to that point now.  There are a few major things that she now depends on help for that she didn't before, but overall, she is able to do what she could do before her surgery on October 31st, 2006.

The newest progress is that Amanda was able to leave the house and ride in the van for the first time since this all began (in a regular seat!). She decided at the last minute that she wanted to go to the last showing of the school play (Father of the Bride) with Tara. So, we loaded the crew up...she put on real clothes, real make-up, and off we went!

Amanda lasted for the entire play in her motorized chair and did quite well, I might add! We are so grateful for that chair...it liberates her while still allowing her to heal.  She did really tire herself out though and needed the next day to recover, but the fact is that she proved to herself that she can do it!

The South Brunswick High School teachers have been wonderful. Amanda had homework today! She watched a video and her brother did the writing, while Amanda answered the the questions on her worksheet for biology. So far, we have Spanish, English and Biology all coming each week. You can imagine how thrilled Amanda is!!  (despite my sarcasm, she is actually keeping busy, so she actually does enjoy this somewhat!)

So, all in all, Amanda is doing exceptionally well. We are so proud of her and so grateful for how far she has come.

Love,
Amanda's Family

January 9, 2007  10:50pm
Amanda continues to do well since our last update. She gets up around 9:30 every day and immediately asks to get into her "chair" and start her day. She's on a routine now and she is eating at most meal times and snacking in between. She has definitely regained some strength in her ability to chew, which makes eating less of a chore than it had been; and sometimes, enjoyable.  She spends the majority of her day, every day, in her chair now.

This week, Amanda started to receive some home-schooling. Her biology teacher, Dr. Murphy paid her a visit this afternoon, and by the end of their session, it was obvious that she needs to increase the challenge! Next session, she plans to bring double the information and work, as Amanda's is still the great student that she has always been!!

This weekend was very nice for Amanda. She really got to enjoy the weather outside and went for walks both Saturday and Sunday in her chair. Saturday, she had a visit from Pop & Mimi and in addition to taking a stroll outside, she enjoyed that visit on the deck in the 72 degree sun!

Amanda's attititude has been exceptional lately, but there's no mistaking that she has her bad days. It's easy to understand that she gets angry and frustrated by her situation, and wishes things were different. Besides being there to answer questions, we all try our best to keep her upbeat and busy so that she doesn't have too much time to dwell on what is not so good.

One way that this is accomplished is by giving her things to look forward to. Make-a-Wish Foundation contacted us about fulfilling a wish of Amanda's.  This was not an easy task, but Amanda decided that she wanted to spend time away from home with her two best girl-friends, Tara and Charleen. Charleen is coming in from Hawaii and the three girls will be spending a weekend in the near future in a New York City hotel and will make a couple of trips to Broadway to see some of the plays that Amanda has been wanting to see! The weekend will include girl-talk, video's, order in food from wherever they want in the city and they are throwing in make-up, hair styling and a manicure for Amanda. She is really excited about her girls weekend. Something that every teenager should experience.

We hope that everyone's year has started off on a good foot and that you're all doing well. As always, thanks for your well wishes and prayers.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Happy New Year! My apologies for not updating the site sooner, but rest assured, Amanda is doing quite well.

Christmas was nice and Amanda did join all of us around the tree to open presents, mostly her little sister's presents! It was not an ordinary Christmas and Amanda was not feeling her best, but we reminded her that the best present we all had this year was that she was here with us, when just a few months ago, we weren't so sure we would have made it to where we are now.

In the past week though, Amanda has made some incredible strides in her recovery. She went from spending the majority of her day in bed to spending the majority of her time in her motorized chair with the rest of us! Yesterday was a record...she was in her chair for more than 12 hours (with a few breaks in between)!! We enjoyed watching the ball drop at midnight and then she turned in for a well deserved night's rest, and slept until 10:45 this morning!!!

More good news is that Amanda has been regaining strength in areas that we thought she had totally lost. She has begun to be able to feed herself again to some degree and is able to hold a cup and bring it to her mouth on her own. To most of us, this is something we take for granted. But for Amanda, it equals independence and some "sense of self" back. She admitted today that she also thought that she couldn't do those things anymore, but was pleasantly surprised when she tried. She even tried to use the computer again today for the first time. Although we will need to make some modifications in that area, her desire to try is an amazing testimony to Amanda's will and perserverence.

Amanda also had a visit from her friend Charlene who was in visiting from Hawaii. Charlene brought Shawn along who was also a pleasure to see. We wish Shawn (and Charlene) luck in his upcoming relocation to Hawaii!

We begin 2007 on a positive note and we remain optimistic that Amanda will continue to improve to the extent possible.  As always, we thank you for your support, well wishes, help and love through these past few months.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda had another pretty good week. While she has her good and bad days, she has managed to get out of bed and leave her room via motorized chair almost every day, and sometimes twice a day. She has been doing a lot better with her eating this week. We have been preparing her food small enough that she can enjoy it without having to work too hard. We even puchased a food processor today and she was anxious for us to use it on her Tastee Sub sandwich!

Speaking of Tastee's, Amanda got her sandwich at the party that her care team from Visiting Nurse's had for her today. They have all been so amazing at caring for Amanda and supporting all of us. Sandy, Stacey, Debbie, Megan and Amy were all gracious enough to bring all of Amanda's requests....Tastee Subs, Salt & Vinegar chips and ice cream sundaes!! All of which Amanda did a fine job of eating!  Gifts were exchanged and the attention really seemed to make Amanda's day. It was nice to see her smiling when they all opened their gifts.

Speaking of gifts, Amanda made it a point to come up with a gift list for her friends and family. We have all tried to help her accomplish her gift purchases, as much as possible. It's a good sign that she's planning and thinking of others during her own daily struggles.

We're looking forward to having her join us at the Christmas tree on Monday.

Amanda is doing well enough that we are threatening to have a teacher from the High School come to start home schooling her each day. She definitely needs something to occupy her time. She is driving her Father crazy!!  Ha, Ha!

Anyway, we wanted to be sure to update you about Amanda's progress and continue to be grateful for all of your support during this challenging time.

We wish all of you a very happy and healthy holiday season!

Love,
Amanda's Family

It has been a pretty good week for Amanda. She has been up in her chair several times this week. She joined us for lunch earlier in the week and made it to the dining room for dinner for the past three nights! She is still not herself completely, and she is still very tired, but we all see major improvements in her desire to be involved and get back to her life as much as possible.

Amanda's two year old sister, Gabi, is thrilled with her sisters' re-appearance, but I'm not sure the feeling is mutual!  We are definitely getting smiles from Amanda regarding Gabi's antics, but a loud and boisterous two year old is not a good match for a slowly healing 15 year old.  We keep their visits short and sweet.

With the holidays around the corner, we are all struggling with what to get for Amanda. We have decided to wait until she feels a bit better and can request some things that might make her happy. We continue to review the local and Broadway plays so that we can try that excursion again in the near future. This time, we'll be renting a special van and taking Amanda in her chair... She has been very clear that she will have "no more ambulances!!".

Once again, we'd like to extend our thanks to all of you for your generosity toward our family with donations, making and sending meals to us, your help around the house, and all of the support from our friends and family. Without all of you, we wouldn't have made it to this point and still kept our sanity! (What we have left of it anyway!).

Wishing all of you happy holidays.

Love,
Amanda's Family

December 8, 2006  11:56am

It's been five days since Amanda came home from her recent hospital stay. We checked with Amanda last night and she said it is safe to say that she is beginning to feel better. She has been off of most of her pain medications, and she has been awake a lot during the day much more every day. She has even been watching several hours of television each day.  She is talking more, laughing more and asking more questions than she has throughout this whole ordeal.  Dad asked me to mention that she is also complaining like her old self and driving him nuts, too!

Amanda has been trying to get up in her wheelchair a little each day also. This morning she got to take a good shower and she went from "bed head" back to her beautiful hair that she takes so much pride in!  There's nothing like a good shower! She really has been a trooper through it all, to say the least. We are all very proud of her and pray for her continued improvement and comfort.

Thanks for all of your prayers, well wishes, and support over the past several weeks. We know that we would not have made it to this point without you.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda came home this afternoon from her most recent hospital stay. Although the hospital visit was a very unpleasant one, Amanda did get the necessary care that she needed to address some issues that needed further medical attention. We will need to step up the medical care at home to stay on top of Amanda's increasing needs, however, with the support of the VNA nurses (and hopefully when they find a much needed and suitable home health aide), we will be able to do what is needed.

In the meantime, we are very happy to have Amanda back home and she feels the same way. She will catch up on her needed rest and hopefully we can encourage her to hang out with us in her chair for a little while tomorrow.

We continue to be so grateful for all of the offers for support. The meals have been wonderful and without them, I'm not sure that we would actually be eating too much during this crisis! Thanks for all of the other help, donations and prayers that you have all been sending our way. It means to much to all of us.

Love,
Amanda's Family

For those of you who were wondering, our trip to NY went as well as can be expected. Amanda was very excited from the moment we talked about going to Broadway. For the first time in a month, she was able to put on real clothes and go outside. Although she was in a stretcher the whole time, she said she felt good being outside and doing something. The Weehawken Paramedics were amazing (thanks Brian and Geo!).  The Port Authority Police were wonderful at escorting us through the tunnel and directly to the theater and then out of the tunnel and to the turnpike!  The people at the Theater were amazing and so accomodating! Mike and I loved the play, but Amanda dozed a bit (she was in a bed after all!) and since she hadn't eaten much, she developed a bad headache 1/2 way through the show. She did great for her first outing, but due to Amanda's discomfort, we thought it best to leave before the play ended. We'll have to go back to see the rest of the play another time.

On Thursday morning, Amanda woke up not feeling well and had some stomach upset throughout the day. It was decided that we needed to return to the hospital to avoid any further complications or any repeat of the original blockage. It was a very stressful night for Amanda and ultimately, she was admitted back to the Pediatric ICU for treatment of her current condition. They found a few other minor infections that needed to be treated, and tomorrow, they will be doing a minor procedure on one of her wounds.

We are hopeful that she will be home again on Sunday. Please continue to pray for Amanda's comfort and safe home-coming.

Thanks for your prayers, help and support.
Love,
Amanda's Family

We must be behind on our updates because our phone has begun to ring off the hook this week. Our apologies to those of you who have called and we haven't had a chance to talk with you much. It's not always crazy around here, it just seems that when things do happen, they all happen at once.

We are at day 11 of Amanda's home-coming. She continues to rest for most of her day, and she still struggles to stay comfortable, but her appetite is good and she has had many interesting requests for food for a person who hadn't eaten solid food in 3 weeks!  She has been a bit more alert and vocal over the past couple of days due to several visits from the nurses. The nurses from the VNA of Central Jersey have been phenominal!! We are so grateful for their help, support and care for Amanda.

Thanks to all of you who prepared and delivered food for us for Thanksgiving and since then for dinners for our family. We are truly grateful.

Amanda had a special visit from Dr. Murphy from SBHS yesterday, who even got a big smile out of her (which has been hard to do!).
Speaking of Dr. Murphy, you may know that she and Amanda's brother were behind the bracelets that have been selling to raise money for Amanda. Since some of that money was going to be used to send us to see "A Chorus Line" on Broadway before Amanda's crisis began, we decided that we should try to find a way to make that happen.

Thanks to Allen Wasser Associates (the plays' General Management Company) and to the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, the Weehawken First Aid Squad and the Port Authority Police, we will be bringing Amanda to see A Chorus Line tomorrow afternoon on Broadway!

We are all praying that she is able to stay comfortable in her portable bed and that she is able to enjoy the performance! We'll fill you in when we return to let you know how things went.

Thanks again for all of your love, support, prayers, and help during this very challenging time for Amanda and all of us.

Love,
Amanda's Family

It has been almost a week since Amanda came home. We continue to work hard to try to keep her comfortable, and with all of the love and support around her from her family and friends, everyone is doing their part.

It has become more difficult to know what to write here on Amanda's web site knowing that she has quite the following of readers.

As things change, for better or worse, we will update this site, but not as often as we have been when there was more to report.

On this night before Thanksgiving, we would really like to thank all of our friends, family and neighbors who have been helping us to keep up our often chaotic home; for arranging, making and bringing meals to us; for your offers of unconditional help, and for all of your ongoing love, prayers and support.  Amanda is not the only lucky one to have all of you in her life, we are all very lucky too.

Wishing all of you a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving!

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda has been resting for the past few days. She does have periods of time when she is alert and has a chance to enjoy her family and friends.  Her appetite has improved since she's been home and she has moved to some solid foods. Overall, we have been trying to keep her comfortable and fulfill her every request.

We thank you for your continued support and help during this challenging time and ask you to continue praying for Amanda.

Amanda came home today to many balloons, flowers and a very large welcome sign made by her best friend, Tara (Thank you Tara!).  It was so nice to see Amanda smile and laugh for the first time since this whole ordeal began. She ate well today also and spent time visiting with her family and friends.

All of the excitement wore her out and we are optimistic that she will have a good nights' sleep.

Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

The past few days have been rather quiet at the hospital for Amanda, until today. She hasn't been as active as she was the other day, but has gotten into her chair a few times. She has continued to eat a little each day, but soup from Dad and pastina from Mom really helped her step up her appetite yesterday and today.

Things took a bit of a turn last night when they found blood clots in Amanda's leg. The doctors offered several options to resolve the issue, and Amanda decided that she didn't want another surgery, so they are treating her with medication to help resolve the problem.

Amanda also decided today that she was tired of the hospital and being poked and prodded, and made it very clear that she wants to come home. So, the doctors and nurses worked with all of us to make arrangements for Amanda to get the care she needs at home. She will have a nurse a few hours each day and the rest of the time we will be with her to make sure that she is comfortable while she regains her strength.

When we mentioned all of the people who want to come see her, she said that we would need a "deli line" to accomodate everyone! So, if anyone has a ticket machine, we'll be needing that to give out numbers!! Seriously though, if you would like to come see Amanda, please either call us or send us an email and let us know when you'd like to stop by (and give us your phone number in the email) and we'll let you know when is a good time.  For those of you who have offered to help out with meals or something else, we have put a link on the main page and here for "How You Can Help".

Amanda should be home by Friday afternoon and will need a little bit of time to settle in. But feel free to write to her in her guestbook and hopefully she can start checking her messages on her own again soon!

Thanks as always for all of your love, prayers and support. We are truly grateful that Amanda has so many wonderful people on her side.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Today was a terrific day in Amanda's recovery!  Although she had a rough night last night, and neither her or her Mom got much sleep, she seemed to have made up for it today.

Dad brought the motorized chair to the hospital this morning. Maybe the chair was her ticket to freedom from this whole thing, and by early this afternoon, she wanted to be disconnected from her IV's and put in her chair. Off she went to visit her friends in the Pediatric ICU where she just left only two days ago to show them her "ride"! They were quite impressed from what I hear (not just with her chair, but with her amazing attitude!).

She also ate quite well tonight and had chicken soup and ice cream. Not bad for someone who hasn't eaten in two weeks! For the first time since this all began, she was smiling and actually engaging in some conversation. She actually said that she had no pain and was really feeling better, and this was all without pain medication!!

The pain meds are finally discontinued, except for occasional doses when she really needs it.  We are very excited about her recent progress and want to thank all of you for your prayers, well wishes and support! Amanda has clearly left a lasting impression in many hearts. She'll look forward to visits from all of you when she returns home!

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda made the move to the Pediatric Unit this afternoon. This is a very good sign that she is on the mend. The room she was moved to looks like a hotel! It's very big and looks like it was just recently built/renovated. The unit is not that busy so they brought an extra bed in the room just for Dad to rest in tonight! Hopefully they both get some sleep!

The doctors have been reducing her pain medication so that she is alert enough to begin her rehabilitation from surgery. She hadn't sat up in bed yet until today, and it's been 11 days since she had her operation. She was wiped but still managed to get out a few smiles and laugh at her Dad's silly jokes.

She managed to eat a little bit of spaghetti tonight and we are grateful that she is finally allowed to start trying to eat again. It will be a bit of a process, but nothing that Amanda can't handle!

Tomorrow or Monday we will be bringing in her motorized chair for her to begin sitting up in (at the doctors' request), so that will hopefully give her some further incentive (and wheels) to get out of there!

We will continue to keep you posted!

Love,
Amanda's Family

We are expecting today to be a good day. Amanda is awaiting clearance to move out of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to a regular Pediatric Unit. We are told this will happen in the next day or so. She is more alert and actually said that she feels a little better today. She slept well last night which always helps!

Her skin is healing very nicely thanks to the work of the specialized wound nurse who is caring for her and also thanks to the nurses on the PICU. They have all been wonderful. She also has a really great, specialized air matress that regularly shifts the air and makes sure she is getting all of the movement that she needs to heal.

We haven't asked her again about visitors, but we are hopeful that once she does begin nutrition by mouth, that will be the turning point for her to feel better and come around more to seeing people. Hopefully this will be in the couple of days, if not sooner.

Hang in there and thanks for your pateince, support, prayers and well wishes while Amanda has recovered to this point.  We will continue to share all of her guestbook notes and all of the cards with her.

Love,

Amanda remains stable and over the past couple of days, there are a few updates. It is getting harder to write when there isn't much to say except for medical details. And to respect Amanda's privacy, I will try to keep those vague and to a minimum, and still try to give you information about her condition.

The doctors continue to be happy with her progress while she recovers from the surgery. Her tests revealed that she continues to heal in her abdomen and there were no surprises there. She did have a little bit of fluid that they were watching in a small portion of her left lung, but they are optimistic that the antibiotics will kick that out with no problem.

Today, she got both of the tubes out that were draining the excess fluid out of her abdomen. They also removed her oxygen. Her vitals are all excellent and she has a lot less annoying tubes bothering her.

Amanda remains uncomfortable due to skin problems resulting from laying in bed for so long, but she continues to rest, are we are optimistic that she will get stronger each day and start to feel better. The doctors are talking about trying to give her nutrition by mouth tomorrow or the next day, so we're hopeful that will make her feel better also.

Thank you so much for your prayers, cards, well wishes and support. We look forward to taking you all up on your offers to help once Amanda is able to come home.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda has been a lot more alert in these past couple of days and is beginning to regain her voice since she has been resting it...which has been hard for her to do, as you know!

She is definitely getting bored just laying around, and would surely be a lot happier if she had her motorized chair to cruise out of there with! She has been laying in the bed for a week now, and is itching to get out, but she is still too weak and hooked up to a few too many things to get out of bed and move around.

Her mother and father rotate shifts staying with her in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and the nursing staff has been wonderful and we are very grateful to them for taking such good care of her.

Amanda goes for some tests tomorrow to make sure everything is healing inside as well as it is healing outside. We'll continue to pray for good news and hope that she can be as comfortable as possible while her body heals.

Thanks again for all of your support and encouraging words. She loves to hear from all of you, and we are all feeling support from your posts as well.

Until the next update.

Love,
Amanda's Family

We haven't written since Friday because there hasn't been much change in Amanda's condition. Amanda remains stable and continues to improve in many areas. Unfortunately, she has been lying in a bed for almost a week and she has developed a couple of pressure sores, which is common for someone in Amanda's condition with this added stress to her body.

She continues to be a trooper and doesn't complain. She has amazing strength, but she's tired and uncomfortable, and we all pray for her to feel better and continue to heal.

Amanda said she was bored today and seemed excited when we asked if she wanted her little sister Gabi to come visit. She perked up a bit when she heard Gabi's voice. Gabi was unphased by all of the equipment in the room and was genuinely happy to see her sister after not having her home for almost a week.

We ask that you continue to pray for her. Thank you for all of your love, prayers and support.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda continues to remain stable. She is breathing well on her own and her vitals all are doing very well.  She is not sedated at all anymore so that she can devote all of her energy to maintaining her breathing. They are also keeping a close watch on the pain medication for the same reason.  As a result, Amanda is in a lot more pain today and is trying very hard to rest. They are switching her on to an air mattress today so we are hoping that will make her feel more comfortable.

The cards started coming in today and that made her smile. She enjoyed hearing all of her messages last night since she was very alert. We read a few over again since the sedation seemed to have effected what she remembers.

She now understands what happened to her and took the news as well as can be expected. She just wants to feel better and to be able to go home. Doctors are saying she may be able to go home in a  couple of weeks as long as her progress continues.  For now, she says she is still not up to visitors, but as soon as she is, we will let you know.

Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. They continue to pay off!

Love,
Amanda's Family

Amanda is breathing on her own!!! She got off the respirator just a few minutes ago and seems to be doing well. Her throat is sore as should be expected, but the doctors are thrilled with her progress, as we are.

Her blood pressure continues to be stable and she was taken off of one of the major pressure medications this morning also. As of yesterday, her blood counts were showing great improvement in regards to infection.

We continue to read her all of your messages in her guest book and I know she really appreciates it. Now that she is off the respirator, once she gets to rest a little, she will be able to comment on all of her messages.

Thanks again for all of the love and support and offers for help. It means so much to Amanda and all of us!

Love,
Amanda's Family

Good news! Amanda is improving. All of the prayers and well wishes are obviously helping Amanda along and we all know that she is a fighter! The doctors' have begun to reduce the amount of help the breathing machine is doing for her. She is fluctuating between breathing at 25-50% on her own which is WONDERFUL for this stage of her recovery!

With the sedation reduced to a minimum, she is more alert and is able to communicate with us by nodding. Her blood pressure had been down but is now improved significantly. She is still fighting the infection, but is on her way.

Thank you for all of your well wishes, prayers and support. It means to much to all of us. We will continue to update this site as much as we can. In the meantime, please continue to pray for Amanda's situation to improve.

Love,
Amanda's Family

Dear Friends and Family,

This morning at 2:00 am, Amanda had emergency exploratory surgery done at Saint Peters Hospital in New Brunswick. She had been having some stomach problems and had not been feeling well for a few days. She had been up all night Sunday evening into Monday morning getting sick and had a fever.  After being seen by her pediatrician, she was sent to the ER at 2:45 Monday afternoon. By 5:00, she had seen a doctor and by 10:15 last night she finally had a CT scan of her abdomen. Her white blood count was very high and there was apparently something visibly wrong in her gastro-intestinal tract. They needed to go in to do exploratory surgery to find and fix the problem. She went in for surgery at 2:00 am. At 4:00 am, she was moved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

To avoid too much detail and medical terminology, Amanda had a condition, stemming from her disease, that caused her colon to rupture and cause damage to her intestinal tract and cause waste to be heavily exposed to her internal abdomen and ultimately caused her to be septic (severe infection).

The doctor was amazed that Amanda tolerated the pain the way she did and had not complained more over time. She really is a fighter and clearly able to withstand more pain than most of us are capable of. Lord knows she has been through more in her 15 years of life so far than any of us will go through in multiple life times.

She came through surgery, but is left with a fight ahead of her. A fight that we know she can get through with her courage and your prayers and love. She is currently fighting off the infections that are in her body with the help of a lot of antibiotics. She is on a respirator to help her breathe tand he doctors are keeping her heavily sedated and giving her pain medications so that she will remain comfortable while her body heals and rests.  She was able to let her mother know this morning that she is comfortable.

Over the next few days, we are praying for her infection to improve so that she can then begin to work on breathing on her own. Once she gets over those two hurdles, the doctors will begin working on re-introducing nutrition to her system and healing her gastro-intestinal situation, but one step at a time.

We will be making posts on the website as often as possible to make sure everyone is up to date on what's going on with Amanda's progress. We ask that you do not send flowers, gifts, or balloons and we are limiting her visitors to family at this time. Your prayers, cards and well wishes will be all that we need and we know that you are all there for us.

We will print the posts to Amanda's Guest Book from her web-site at so that she can hear all of the well wishes being sent her way. Thanks for all of your love and support up until now and during this very difficult time.

Love,
Amanda's Family
