Welcome to our personal website dedicated to Chessie Rescue and all our the wonderful creatures we've been blessed with as a result of rescue:Bunker, Boo, Brandy, Chestnut and Zeus and Maddie!

I'm Chris Longe and my wife Elizabeth and I live in the DC Metro area.  We are both retired Navy;  I rode around under the water for most of my 24 year career and Liz flew over the top of the water, piloting various aircraft and helos for her 20 year tour.  We are on our second careers and trying to figure out what we want to be when we grow up.
We are volunteer members of Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue (CBR&R) and we work closely with other state and national Chesapeake Bay Retriever (CBR) rescue organizations.

We hope to provide interesting and useful information on CBRs and CBR rescue. Our hope is that this information will assist you in determining if a CBR is the right breed for you.

Liz, Bunker and Chestnut

9 years ago we were blessed to be introduced to the breed through Chestnut.  We were her last chance.
During the first vet visit, Chestnut wasn't exactly cooperative.  The vet who examined her told us she thought Chestnut was a dangerous and viscious dog and should be put down immediately.

8 months later I took the vet pictures of Chestnut delivering Christmas presents to toddlers.

"Nutter" was a real sweetheart and gave us the perfect challenge to learn to appreciate all the nuances of this incredible breed.
She was "water crazy" and I swam halfway across the Potomac on one occassion and halfway across the Occoquan rivers to get her when she got out of her leads.
She was also an incredible companion for the all too brief two years we had her.  She died, all to soon and suddenly after a swim July 4th 2003 at the age of 4 from an undiagnosed heart condition.
