This page lists correction to Security in Computing 4th edition (of 2007). Errors in copies of the 3rd edition
are listed on a separate page.
Note that known errors are always corrected in the next printing, so these errors may already be corrected
in the copy you have in your hand.
- p 42, first paragraph in section Breakable Encryption. Two computations are incorrect. The text should read "... would
require on the order of 1025 seconds, or roughly 1017 years."
- p 54, displayed text, first quintet should have A (bold) and N (not bold) under column a
- p 71 second paragraph under heading "Triple DES" should read "The so-called triple DES procedure is C = E(k3, D(k2,
E(k1,m)))." [The second operation is decryption, not encryption.]
- p 72, 73 and 75 all refer to Vincent Rijmen and Joan Daemen as "Dutch" cryptographers. They are, in fact, Belgian.
- p 96, exercise 12, last line should read axfcq dmsdj xzhbn gq
- p 102, should read "silver bullet" [delete superfluous quotation mark]
- p 116 in paragraph about worms, author's name should be spelled Shoch.
- p 132, footnote 2 should read low-level
- p 234, should read Biometrics are very reliable for authentication but much less effective for identification.
- p 461, footnote 4 should read only SG is encrypted [italics, G as subscript]
- p 764, fourth equation in middle of page should read [0,1,0,1]*[15,13,9,16] = 29
- p 810, reference [SHO82], author's name should be spelled Shoch
- p 822, index entry should read Daemen, Joan
- p 840, index entry should read segmentation combined with paging
