Poetry Unit

Read Poems  * Write Poems  * Analyze Poems

Figurative Language

It's not to early to think about your Poetry Book. You can start by gathering some art supplies and clearing a work space.

Materials : glue stick, colored paper, scissors, watercolors...

During this Unit students will

  • experience the multi-step process of writing poetry  

           brainstorm > draft  > revise > edit > publish

  • explore the work of other poets
  • read, discuss, and analyze poetry and prose poetry. 
  • identify poetic terms 
  • examine how other poets employ these devices.

Reading Poetry

  • read & enjoy poetry written by students and published poets
  • take notes on poetry
  • analyze basic meanings from poems
  • identify poetic devices used by poets
    • Refer to the glossary of terms and make a set of flashcards
    • Understand extended metaphor

Organize all your Poetry Assignments in a Folder

  1. Inspiration Poem or "Mimic Poem"
  2. Random Thoughts Poem 
  3. Build a Poem 
  4. Choose one of your first three poems and mount one
  5. Ode
  6. Simile Poem
  7. Extended Metaphor Poem
  8. Songs as Poems
  9. Bio Poems ( writing to learn) using one of the poets from the  3  library poems
  10. I am From Poem

Students will select 3 Poems from the library

  • Analyze all 3 Poems from the library
  1. Free Write
  • 12 Line free write
