Understanding Poetic Devices

Figurative Language

Goal : Recognize the difference between a simile and a metaphor.

Simile is a comparison using like or as.
It usually compares two dissimilar objects.
Refer to the Exercises we did in class : abstract and concrete nouns
These dissimilar or unconnected items made great similes!

A metaphor states that one thing is like something else.
It is a comparison, but it does not use like or as to make the comparison.
For example Her hair is silk.
The sentence is comparing or stating that hair is silk.

Extended Metaphor
Mother to Son ~Langston Hughes
"Life for me aint been no crystal stair"
Langston Hughes uses the comparison of life to a staircase throughout the poem. Examples, ' climbin on' , reachin' landin's, turnin' corners
