LESSON 1 

The Atlantic Coastal Plain

LOCATION:  narrow strip in Southeastern PA

·        Part of Delaware River Valley

·        Philadelphia – state’s largest city

o   Schuylkill & Delaware Rivers meet here

o   Major port

o   Center of industry, business, culture and sports

o   Located along fall line – boundary between higher land to west and lower coastal plain – see map p. 35

FALL LINE –

·        makes cities along them centers of trade and markets where people buy goods

·        rushing water creates power for factories and cities

·        Why settle here?  Means of transportation via rivers – merchants and traders buy and sell goods

·        Philadelphia Naval Shipyard –League Island

o   Nation’s first shipyard

Now owned by a private company

 

LESSON 2

The Piedmont Region

LOCATION:  between Atlantic Coastal Plain and Ridge and Valley Regions

Bordered by fall line to east, and Appalachian  Mountains to west

·        Piedmont – “foot of the mountain”

(Appalachian Mountain)

·        Plateau of gently rolling hills and valleys

·        Heart of PA farming industry

 

·        Contains:

o   Lancaster Amish farms

o   New Hope- Delaware River Canals

o   Chester County – West Chester, Coatesville

o   The Main Line, Media

o   Daniel Boone Homestead

 


LESSON 3

 

RIDGE & VALLEY

 

LOCATION:  stretches across PA from southwest to northeast

·        Ridges and Valleys give the region its name

·        Ridges- mountain ranges bordered by valleys

·        Part of Appalachian Mountains

 

Great Valleyarea of rich farmland along eastern edge and extending into Maryland

·        Made up of many smaller valleys –Lebanon, Cumberland, Lehigh and Lackawanna Valley

 

Major Industry – Coal Mining

 

Farming in Valleys – excellent soil - orchards and fruit

 

PA turnpike established to help transport goods

 

Harrisburg  -State Capitol –-1812

 

Nearby caverns- underground caves    -tourist sites

 

Pocono Mountains – recreation area- skiing, boating, fishing, rafting

 

LESSON 4

ALLEGHENY PLATEAU REGION

LOCATION:  Allegheny Mountains run along eastern edge of this region

§        The largest area of any natural region in PA

§        Covers most of northern & western PA

§        Allegheny Mountains of PA are part of the Appalachian Mountains. (see map p. 49)

 

TERRAIN of this region: 

-flat (plateau) region that is elevated with hills and valleys

- glaciation caused ridges, hills, and valleys to form on this plateau (during the Ice Age)

RIVERS:

Monongahela, Allegheny & Susquehanna Rivers are located here.

Resources:  coal mined since 1820

Coal is responsible for helping the state’s industrial growth.

Used to run furnaces and steam engines

          Two ways to mine:

1)                deep mining: digging tunnels into the Earth

2)                surface mining: removing coal along the surface (cheaper and safer than deep mining)

Main City:  Pittsburgh – center of transportation, industry and culture
