Nearby caverns- underground caves -tourist sites
Pocono Mountains – recreation area- skiing, boating, fishing, rafting

ALLEGHENY PLATEAU REGION
LOCATION: Allegheny Mountains run along eastern edge of this region

in PA

Covers most of northern & western
PA

Allegheny Mountains of PA are part of
the Appalachian Mountains. (see map p. 49)
TERRAIN of this
region:
-flat (plateau) region that is elevated with hills and
valleys
- glaciation caused ridges, hills, and valleys to
form on this plateau (during the Ice Age)
RIVERS:
Monongahela, Allegheny & Susquehanna Rivers are located
here.
Resources: coal mined since
1820
Coal is responsible for helping the state’s industrial
growth.
Used to run furnaces and steam engines
Two ways to mine:
1) deep mining: digging tunnels into the Earth
2) surface mining: removing coal along the surface (cheaper and safer than deep mining)
Main City: Pittsburgh – center of transportation,
industry and culture
