In order to become a good writer, you must practice your writing skills each and every day.  You can write notes, letters, stories, peoms and keep journals about all kinds of topics that interest you.  You can choose to write about anything and everything using your senses -sight, hearing, smell, and touch.

You can become a good writer by making what you write as interesting and captivating as possible.  You must try to paint a mental picture for the reader, using all parts of speech, especially adjectives and adverbs.  Following the Steps of the Writing Process below will help you develop your work.  Don't be afraid to revise again and again.

Below are some guides and tools to help you become a better writer.

THE STEPS
OF THE
WRITING PROCESS

PREWRITING

1.  Choose a SUBJECT to write about and think of  DETAILS about the subject or content of your writing.

Examples of SUBJECTS could be:

        • People
        • Places
        • Things
        • Events
        • Strong Feelings about someone, something or an event

2.  Make sure your subject meets the requirements for your assignment.

3.  Make a PLAN on how to use your ideas such as a story map, word web, venn diagram, brainstorm list, outline, etc.

WRITING

1.  Start your First Draft

2.  Don't worry about your mistakes in format, paragraphs or spelling.  Write down all of your ideas on paper or on your computer.  Add new ideas throughout your writing as you develop your story.

3.  Don't forget to include a beginning, a middle and an ending.

REVISING

1.  Read your first draft.  Reading it out loud to yourself is a good way to see if it makes sense.  Ask someone else to read it too.

2.  After reviewing your writing, change any parts that do not make sense or are missing words.  Make sure to correct the parts that are out of order and put them in the proper sequence.

3.  Make changes to your writing by re-reading,  reordering, adding or deleting parts which need improvement.

EDITING

1. Check your writing for errors in format, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

2.  Have someone else, a friend, parent or teacher check your writing for errors.

3. Prepare a "polished" final copy for publication.

4.  Check the final copy for any additional errors.  This last final check is called proofreading.

5.  Share your work with others.
