Columbus Day Tournament - Player Comments from Coach Phil
|
 |
Here are a few things that stick in my mind that I want to point out in no particular order.
- Rachel Berry (with the help of Xenia Kerstanski) posted 3 shutouts and made some great saves and then when she plays in the field, she scores
a goal.
- Jane Horton scores a hat trick in our semi-final game. In particular I thought the
one touch left footed goal was great.
- Katie Lord played great at sweeper and I truly appreciate her commitment to stay for both
games on Saturday, drive home for homecoming and be back on Sunday morning for our 8:00 AM game. (Thanks to her Frank for
doing all that driving!)
- Julia Czegan for her non stop effort at center forward, working hard every game with very
little rest.
- Dani Davis for playing well at stopper or wherever I played her, coming off the field during
the championship saying “I feel like I am going to pass out”, laying on the ground behind the bench with cold
towels on her stomach and forehead, then going back in as soon as I needed her to, and playing hard the remainder of the game.
- Katie Poole for playing well at the outside fullback position and improving with each new
challenge. Putting up with my “coaching” when I know that sometimes she is probably not happy with what
I have said, but listening to me and trying to be better the next time.
- Bridget Mentzer challenging anyone on the field, including me on the sideline. For
telling me that I need to be careful what I say at times because I am upsetting the players. I truly appreciate her
“coaching” me!
- Kayla Taylor for filling in well at each fullback position, and then playing left wing
and scoring!
- Allison Kuhn, working hard all the time – including at practice (more later), even
with a bad hamstring, and telling me, “I can play if you need me to, but I feel that someone who is full strength will
probably help the team more”. Then she played as much as she could for me and took herself out when she couldn’t
go any more.
- Morgan Denfeld, controlled the middle of the field all weekend, scored two goals and after
the final game was told by the referee that she was the MVP of the game. Her efforts we also recognized by other parents
from the other teams who were heard to say, “That #28 is controlling the middle of the field”.
- Chelsea Proctor for her commitment to the team during the finals. She “lost
her lunch” a few times prior to the game, did not warm up, sat on the bench feeling terrible with her migraine headache,
when I finally asked her if she felt she could play, she said she would try. When she stood up to go to the middle for
the substitution, she said “Whoa, that feels really weird” then she goes in and plays the remainder of the game
as if she was perfectly fine.
- Dani Dentler, played well all weekend, and even when her ankle was hurting her again, she
came out and took her shoe off, then got it back on and went back in to play because we needed her to and gave great effort
in every game.
- Victoria Boone, played well all weekend, kept the ball moving like we want her to.
She took a big hit in the stomach and got up and stayed in the game because she is a fighter.
- Xenia Kerstanski, played on the field and in the goal, gave me great effort all weekend
and continues to be an asset to the team playing anywhere we need her to.
- Sarah Miller, played well all weekend, especially in the final game when we needed her
most with the injuries and illnesses we had.
- Finally, to the
entire team for welcoming and accepting Sydney Murley as a guest player and
to Sydney for playing so well in every role I asked her to play. Thanks Sydney, we loved having you!
