2008 Hearing Aid Bills
How You Can Help!

Below is a sample letter to send to a legislator. Note the more personal letter the better! Tailor your letter to who you are addressing and what you are asking:

(Legislator address)

Dear (either Assemblyman/woman or Senator) (last name)

I am writing for your support of bills (bill numbers depending on whether it is an assembly or senate bill). These bills require all health insurers to provide coverage for hearing aids.

As (type either "a late deafened adult or hard of hearing adult" or "a parent of a child with a hearing loss" etc.) I have first hand experience with the financial burden of purchasing hearings for ("myself" or "my child") without the benefit of any insurance coverage. (If a parent write "Appropriately fitted and well-functioning hearing aids are medically necessary for the development of my child's speech and language skills" and any other fact!) (If a deafened adult, explain the importance of hearing aids to your quality of life, job, etc.) Hearing aids today can cost thousands of dollars per hearing aid and need to be replaced every few years.

I expect to see your name on the list of representatives supporting this important legislation.

I can be reached at (phone number) to discuss this important issue.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

(your name and address)

We did it! H.A.I.L. passed in 2008!
