In the height of the Cold War, their Soviet-American love affair was as
forbidden as their black market dealings and lands Yuri in jail. Kyra spends twenty unhappy years trying to forget him an
the horrors that await him in the gulag.
Kyra sees Yuri's photo in Time Magazine. He's wearing an army uniform--the
very symbol he rebelled against in his youth. Kyra flies to Moscow. In her race against time, she must find Yuri. She must
have answers. Has perestroika truly freed Russia? Or is it merely a screen built from the red dust of the Iron Curtain?
There's
some of my story in Red Passion. I traveled to Moscow and Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) when I was a senior in college. I
was deeply affected by the trip. None of my previous travels had touched me in the same way, and none have since. My father's
ancestors hail from some tiny nation that had since been swallowed up by the great Red machine; perhaps there is a spiritual
connection to the land.
I didn't realize the true impact of the trip until twenty years had passed. All of a sudden
the memories of those three weeks crept into my thoughts and dreams. Slowly the thoughts formed into a nagging desire to write
a book based on my memories.
Red Passion is the result. It blends my memories of the bliss, excitement and terror
I felt all those years ago with the way I imagine Moscow today. Tying it all together is the enduring love story I can only
dream about.
