The first group of New Yorkers arrived
on Sunday evening. We had bought dinner in town so we only needed to settle into
our “huts” and unpack. On Monday morning we learned the enormity
of the task. There are about 100 individual requests for help in the office. The cases are heartbreaking: requests from elderly, disabled, solo folks. Some people are living in moldy houses, a woman’s daughter is living in her mother’s tool shed,
and some few have FEMA trailers. We combined forces with the other work team
(from Hamburg, NY) that is staying at “Camp Gautier” and did some sheet rock work. Emily Merchant did a yeoman’s job in the kitchen and Sandi Yingling worked in the office.
Thanks for reading. Check out the pictures, keep us in your prayers, and check back soon.
