The Deming J Hastings house circa 1837 above is located at 4 Milford St.
In 1822 Ralph Mann, who at that time owned most of the northwest corner of Rabbit Hill, sold 4.5 acres of woodland near the West Parish Meetinghouse (Community Church 1814) to Daniel Nourse,  yeoman.  In the early deeds the buyer and seller’s professions were mentioned.  A yeoman, at that time, was considered to be a member of the class of lesser freeholders who cultivated their own land.  In 1837, David Nourse sold ¾ acre of land just west of Timothy Manns lot to Joseph Partridge, who had already erected a dwelling house and barn on the land (4 Milford).  In 1844, Partridge lost the land due to mortgage foreclosure, and the house was sold to Deming J Hastings.  Deming Hastings had married Lucia A Daniels in 1839 and they had 4 children.
