These photos show the development of a processional cross I made for my home parish -
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Forest Hills, Queens. The name of this image is "Christus Rex" - which portrays
Jesus as a king who reigns from the Cross. While this image is more prevalent in western churches, its theology is straight
from the Gospel of St. John where the Cross is synonymous with Glory. In designing this image, I have incorporated traditional
Eastern Orthodox inscriptions along with English so that the icon will be more accessible to our congregation. The "IC"
and "XC" on top are the short form for "Jesus Christ" and the "NIKA on the bottom is Greek for "Conquers".
The
cross is 12 x 15 inches and was mounted on a pole and finished in black lacquer. It stands 65 inches and has been a
wonderful addition to our services during Lent.
