This painting was
designed for a church in Vermont, and was intended for use as the parish's outdoor signboard. The design was done in
collaboration with the church’s pastor, and incorporates St. John (eagle) with a medallion of the Trinity. The
medallion replicates the stained glass window that is over the main entrance of the church. The building itself
sits atop a green hill in the right corner. The pastor wanted an image which would incorporate both the parish's
names (Trinity, parish of St. John's) and also help the congregation understand its call to go forth and proclaim the Gospel
to the people of this lovely community in the foothills of the Green Mountains. I included some symbols from Orthodox
iconography (such as the tri-fold ray in the top corner).
At last report, the
pastor, who is also a very fine carpenter, has yet to rebuild the outdoor signboard.
[It’s a massive task compared to painting an icon.] I am hopeful
this will happen one day soon. I love the idea of the people in town having to
confront the eagle’s glare.
This is the sort of project I love to do – dreaming together
with a faith community to help them put something of their unique identity into image language – to tell a wordless
tale about who they are and where they hope to go.
