Beth with Oscar Or is it Oscar with Beth
Beth, owner of three dogs, only brought one pup with her, Oscar, a ShihaPoo, to the party. Although
Oscar holds a special place in her heart, it is her eldest dog, Bella that has a permanent reserved space on Beth’s
leg. “I had Bella tattooed on my leg” Beth explained while rolling up her pants. “She’s my soul mate”.
Bella is achieving much celebrity and has recently been featured in several doggy commercials and was photographed on the
cover of some major dog magazines. Bella will soon be celebrating her eighth birthday and Beth is organizing a “pawty”
in her honor. Bella, a very active member of the canine community, works as an associate at New York Tails, a magazine that
promotes animal products and events.
Pawprints Jewelry™ publishes our Pet Spotlight to present your "pet tails," stories about your pet and their personalities.
"Bella" - NYC, NY
Pawprints Jewelry™ customer, Beth Joy Knutsen of New York City, has entered her soul mate, Bella.

She was rescued by Beth in 1998. Like most of us, she's a little of everything.

Bella will be celebrating her 8th birthday on January 12th. What
a great birthday gift if she won!

‘Greatest American Dog’,
a ten-week reality series which showed dogs and their people competing for a $250,000 prize on CBS this summer, captivated
pet lovers who wanted to see which dog/person team would ultimately demonstrate the strongest bond between each dog and his
or her person. But relationships between the human contestants were another story. Strained, tense and angry confrontations
were common in front of the camera and, according to one of the shows more controversial contestants, things were even worse
than what they seemed. Whether you were a fan or foe of Beth Joy Knutsen (and her Bella Starlet Dog), listen in as she speaks
candidly about what she saw behind-the-scenes, from bitterness between contestants to the questionable safety of the dogs
themselves. This is part one of a two-part segment examining Greatest American Dog and other pet-related ‘reality’
shows. Next week, we’ll talk directly with American Humane, the 68 year-old watchdog group for the treatment of animals
in movies and television, and the new challenges reality television has brought with it.
Then, Pets In the City
once again turns its attention to the economy’s effect on our pets and the way we care for them. Some argue that New
York City pets are among the most pampered in the world, but there are many more pet owners struggling to keep their canines
in kibble and their cats in catnip. What products and services are worth cutting back on, and what’s worth the splurge?
We’ll talk with Rachel Swan, head of Pawsitive Productions and creator of “The Enlightened Canine Expo”
coming up this November, to get her insights and advice.
We are featured in Mara Schiavocampo of NBC's newspiece titled:
"PET PARENTS" February 2008
Babies that bark
Posted: Monday, February 04, 2008 11:41 AM by Sam Singal
By Mara Schiavocampo, NBC Nightly News digital correspondent
As you can see in my piece Babies That Bark, pet parents are childless pet owners who tend to treat their animals like children. You know the type: they arrange play
dates for their dogs, refer to themselves as "Mommy" to the cat, and dress up their puppies. I know pet parents pretty well.
Reluctantly I'll admit that I am one. Here are my "kids":
The thing is, you never start out with the intention of becoming
a pet parent. As one man I met at a dog birthday party told me, "We're not like crazy dog people or anything." But there he
was, at a dog birthday party! It's a change that sneaks up on you. You get an animal, think it's cute, then you kind
of start to like it and the next thing you know you're madly in love with a fur ball and breaking out the credit card at Petco.
Anything to see them smile (and yes, they do smile).
Both of my babies are rescue animals. They're the greatest little
friends I could have hoped for. The good news is there are tons more out there like them, just waiting for a home. Hope, the
sweet Chihuahua I used in my piece, is up for adoption.
You can find her and lots of other homeless animals at www.animalhaven.org. C'mon, we pet parents are looking for a few good people to fill the ranks!
" Dear Mara,
Thank you for featuring in your news video
what is most amazing gift to us...our furkids!!! You blog and little darlings are fabulous:)
We have been getting
tons of congrats e-mails!!!
We appreciate your respect for those that give us unconditional love...

Paws for Relaxation - Restful Paws Bed &
Breakfast By Beth Joy Knutsen and Bella Starlet Dog
The daily grind of the concrete jungle of Manhattan makes all of us want to run home to our sanity and to the unconditional
love we receive from our pets. But is there also a place we can escape to with our furkids? Is there a magical world that
has no loud noises, and no stress?
Happily, Bella Starlet Dog and I found such a place. It is aptly called "Restful Paws -- the place where Pets bring
their Owners to relax."
Located in the quaint town of Holland in Western Massachusetts, we were surrounded by fresh air, gorgeous foliage, and
winding roads before arriving at the enchanting Bed & Breakfast...oops, Bella Starlet Dog just woofed to me that we shall
call it "Bark & Breakfast"!
Restful Paws welcomes guests year round. It opened in 2003 and is run by the gracious Korny family: Barbara, Raymond,
daughter Maria and their wonderful pooch, Rosie. Calling themselves "Relaxation Hosts", they had a wonderful concept--to show
respect to the paws in everyone's family on vacation. Restful Paws is their dream that came to fruition. They are pet-orientated,
welcoming birds, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, and even goldfish. "Nothing bigger than a sheep!" Raymond laughs. "Animals are people
too. They require impeccable services just as we do on vacations. We set high standards of integrity for our quality of services
offered, and we live up to them."
Your family--human and pet alike--is treated like royalty with personalized attention. At breakfast, where you can dine
in the gazebo, you'll get a cookie for your pet with each pet's name on it. Afterwards, Bella Starlet Dog, her brother Oscar
and her sister Riff enjoyed swimming in Rosie B's pool, a state-of-the-art fresh water facility that is naturally purified,
and later hiked on hand-built trails. After a day of fun, the dogs received amazing massages by resident masseuse, Michelle
M. Poirier, a Pet Massage Therapist of Healthy Paws Pet Massage. Bella and her siblings then headed to Woofers, an adorable
pet sitting service the Korny family offers to pet parents when they want to head out on the town for some humans-only fun,
like antiquing, horseback riding and dining.
RESTFUL PAWS has a Paw Guest Book, and they put your pet's picture in it. When Bella Starlet Dog and I returned later
on in the fall for an annual Pet Rock Festival (www.PetRockFest.com), the page was turned to our pets' photo to welcome us. No detail is overlooked-- from cleanliness, to ambiance, to the amazing
variety of their homemade breakfasts served to you and your pooch in a basket each day. Bella Starlet Dog and I give them
four out of four paws! Call 888.430.PAWS or visit: http://www.RestfulPaws.com to book your pleasant stay. (Editor's note: complimentary accommodations were graciously provided by Restful Paws.)
There is nothing as unbearable as a bad date. From the awkward conversation to the strained laughter to the moments of
sheer bewilderment (Did he just call me “Poopsy?”), dating is not an activity for the easily discouraged. Thankfully,
Justin Racz returns with this newest installment to help ease the romantic pain. These would-be Casanovas remind us that there
are worse times to be had. Including entries such as: “Creepy Non-Blinker,” “Keeps Telling You How
Much You Remind Him of His Sister,” "Mechanical Bull Riding," “Lap Dog
Girl,” and “Invites you over and is wearing pajamas when you arrive,” 50 Dates Worse Than Yours
presents just about every blindingly bad date around. Filled with entertaining photographs and outrageous bullet points listing
each prospective partner’s hideous traits, this is the perfect gift for anyone who has ever faked food poisoning just
to get away from that guy her aunt set her up with.

It

It
was very much publicized that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have drawn an enormous amount of attention as they lined up
support among high-profile donors in Hollywood.
Yet, quietly, unassumingly, Peaches received a celebrity endorsement of her own. The Peaches For Prez Campaign announced that
Bella Starlet Dog has given her paw of approval to Peaches for president.
A
campaign spokes-people-person said, "Unlike the multi-million dollar dinners and cocktail receptions Clinton and Obama garner with Hollywood supporters, obviously a mission to raise as much money as possible, Peaches seeks to only
raise an awareness of her candidacy and her message."
In
endorsing the Peaches for Prez Campaign, Bella Starlet barked, ""With my paw to my heart, it is evident Peaches can show all
of the voters that being President just takes unconditional love for your fellow countrydogs! Hugs and woofs to all of my
friends and fans."
When
asked for a statement, Peaches arfed. "It is with great honor that I graciously accept Bella Starlet's endorsement. Rather
than a cocktail reception, I happy to receive a wagging tail reception from a star such as Bella Starlet."
Beth Joy, Bella, and their friends waved to millions of onlookers atop their own float at the Village Halloween Parade.
Bella, a New York City model, spent nearly a year preparing for the annual Village Halloween Parade. She waited for months
for her specially made costume to arrive and, a couple of weeks before the big night, she had her hair cut and braided with
beads to match it. It’s not too much to ask for the star of her own float – but Bella is a dog.
Her owner, Beth Joy Knutsen, wasn’t the only proud parent to dress up with her pet last night.
It is possible that approximately 7.4 million households across the country did, according to a study released last week
by the National Retail Federation, the country’s largest retail trade association.
Although this was the first study of its kind, local pet storeowners say they have noticed a trend for quite some time.
Anna Reyes, assistant manager of Canine Styles Downtown, said her Village store began selling pet clothes approximately
two and a half years ago and it now accounts for approximately 60 to 65 percent of the store’s total annual sales. With
a growing number of Halloween-themed pet events within the city this year, Reyes said more costumes were ordered to meet the
growing demand.
“This year we started putting the costumes out right at the beginning of October,” Reyes said. “It did
a lot better than last year.”
Reyes said only a handful of costumes, which sold for $25 to $35, were left by the end of the night.
P. Elizabeth Anderson, author of “The Powerful Bond between People and Pets,” said most people treat their
animals as members of their family, even like surrogate children.
“Animals are treated as a member of the family in a role similar to that of a child with all the rights and privileges
bestowed on children,” Anderson said.
Taisha Rivera, a veterinary technician at the TriBeCa-SoHo Animal Hospital, dresses her dog, Tsunade, on a daily basis.
She looks forward to dressing up her daschund up in frilly dresses and other cute outfits.
“I like the attention she gets,” Rivera said. “Everybody takes pictures of her.”
For Halloween, she bought Tsunade’s Pocohantas costume on sale for $14. She said she has spent about $50 on pet clothes
since she adopted her pet last April. Zahra Meherali, on the other hand, made a promise to her friends she would not dress
her dog in clothes. Although she will admit to putting a jacket on her yorkie, Sigmund Freud, on cold days, she said that’s
where she draws the line. She only makes a large exception for Halloween.
“He’s a dog. I want him to be a dog,” Meherali said. “I can’t dress him everyday. He’s
a dog, not a doll.”
For their first Halloween together, they boarded the animal float at the Village Parade, joining Knutsen and Bella. To
fit the float’s New York City theme, Meharali dressed up as a tourist and Sigmund was dressed as the Naked Cowboy, a
Times Square staple. Sigmund wore his own cowboy hat, a pair of white underwear briefs, and a toy guitar wrapped around his
furry body.
Knutsen started the animal float for the Village Parade last year after walking the parade with Bella for seven years.
She rescued Bella from an abusive home in 1998 and uses the float to promote pet adoption in the city. She said she is happy
animals are finally getting recognition for their participation in the parade.
“Over the years, the animal craze has sky-rocketed,” Knutsen said. “When I started going to these events
there were only a couple. Now there are about 20 to 30 events within the metropolitan area.”
Last night’s pet-related events also included the Downtown Doghouse’s Fifth Annual Halloween Party, where dogs
bobbed for hot dogs and went home with doggie bags filled with healthy treats, and the Hounds of Halloween Costume Party,
where prizes were awarded to the best pet, child, and adult costumes of the night.
10.20.06 Due to the overwhelming response of well wishes
for our float, before the actual parade, we have pre-booked the float for next year with the Village Halloween Committee!
Our theme is a big surprise....so stay tuned:) We are so happy that our dream is coming to fruition!
10.31.06 We were the opening act for KISS, yes the real
band (Gene & Paul) at NYC's Village Halloween Parade, i.e., Howl-o-ween, and we made PAWstory by Celebrating
The Year of the Dog! The photos will be posted soon, so stay tuned:)
11.02.06 Wow....It is PAWSitively amazing!
We want to thank the parade staff, our friends,
and our families for believing in us from the beginning of our "secret project" (the float) a year ago. Thank you to
all of the parade revelers, celebs and press for your congratulatory e-mails and phone calls that have made
us feel so good, and when we saw the float for the first time in all its glory on Tuesday night, I started crying tears of
joy:) Bella & I are so happy to be innovators and we will continue to carry on this tradition. We hope that
many animals will be adopted from the rescue groups that walked with us.
November 3, 2006 - Maddie Graces NYC Halloween Float
KISS was Grand Marshall of the Village Halloween Parade in Manhattan, but right in front was a float celebrating
the people and pets of New York and featuring Maddie. The float was sponsored by New York Tails Magazine, BellaStarletDog, and Street Treats. Writes Tails Publisher, Diane West, "It was particularly exciting
to see everyone yell when Maddie waved --Maddie has become quite the local celebrity from being at all the Mayor's Alliance
adoption events!"
A Bella Starlet Dog Fun

DogCatemy Awards Gala Shines Spotlight on a Good Cause
You don’t often get the chance to bring your dog along to a black tie optional event, but North Shore Animal League
America’s DogCatemy Awards was a fun new twist on the typical fundraising gala.
Friends, supporters and “well behaved dogs” were all invited to take part in the special event at Capitale
in New York City on November 29th. A crowd of nearly 300 gathered to view unscripted, short movies in which celebrities gave
viewers a funny and touching look into their personal lives with their most trusted friends. Master of Ceremonies, actress
and comedian Nora Dunn, entertained guests throughout the evening and singer Kelly Sweet provided live entertainment.
The awards presentation included Best Dogumentary, Best Ensemble Pack, Best Pawformance, Best Tail Waggin’ Comedy,
and Best in Show. Click here to see all the videos and cast your own vote!
All proceeds from this event support North Shore Animal League America's mission of rescuing pets throughout the world
and placing them in loving homes.
Stray from the Heart’s 3rd Annual Home for the Holidays Event was a HUGE success and its all thanks to YOU!
Well, our very special annual holiday event has come to a close but the memories will live on. Thanks so much to all our
volunteers and support staff, including the venue “Guest House” for -as always- being so good to us.
A special thanks goes out to Ruth Manson for the most incredible spread of food an event could ever wish for. She
outdid herself this year with an amazing selection and assortment of delicious delectables that were the hit of the party!
Ruth is a fantastic person with a heart of gold!
Another very special thanks goes out to Lavinia Lowerre & her fabulous family for donating all the wine that was enjoyed
at the event. After a few UPS scares, the many cases of incredible Peconic Bay Winery’s finest made it from Cutchogue NY to the depths of 27th street and was a very welcome treat for all the guests. This
fantastic family also donated an amazing winery tour as one of the raffle prizes (won by our very own incredible hard-working
volunteer Ila Doyle), complete with a limo ride to the vineyard (thank you Mike Sachs) and back!
Thanks also goes to Nina Chiafolo for the beautiful photogrphs of the dogs for the calendar, the site and for the posters
at the event. They were ADORABLE! Remember those pups in the posters will all be up for adoption soon - so fill out an adoption application today
