Dog Show Report - 3 A CORNUCOPIA OF THANKS, MORE PIX, AND WHAT ABOUT PEE WEE?
Thanks to everyone who came out last Sunday to help make the 1st
Annual Marine Park Dog Show and Costume Parade a woof-worthy, tail-wagging occasion.
Much of the credit goes to Nature Center Coordinator Kristy Di Cario for convincing us
that a Halloween event would be a fun thing to do. We expanded on Kristy's idea and used the opportunity to do fundraising
for Animal Care & Control of NYC -- not to take credit for that, but to note that the Parks Department has new rules that
bar Parks employees from actively raising money, even for nonprofit organizations, on Park grounds.
Front and center and making events along Fillmore Avenue go
smoothly, entertainingly, all too quickly were our gracious emcee, Beth Joy Knutsen, and her close companion, Bella, part
terrier and all starlet. On this very gusty day, Beth seemed to gather us all together into one happy, lively circle. Wind?
What wind?
The three judges -- Head Urban Park Ranger Anthony Prastaro, artist Amber Alvarez, and Woof
Bites, Inc. founder Devorah Fong -- had some tough choices to make but did so without stepping on any paws.
The proceeds from the raffle tickets sold by MarineParkDogs.com volunteers prior to the event
and on Sunday totaled over $500. Reps from Animal Care & Control also sold tickets, and we're awaiting word from
ACC on how much they raised. Thanks to Yola, Jeannie, Liz, Melissa, Helene, Harley, Claire, Steve, and the Nature Center volunteers
who sold tickets.
Judges Urban Park Ranger Anthony Prastaro, Devorah Fong, and Amber Alvarez determine who's
top dog.
ACC and volunteers from North Shore Animal League brought cats and
dogs for adoption via their pet-mobile. A few critters were adopted -- one of which, a husky-mix puppy, was given a home by
the Barone family. Sebastian Barone is one of the owners of Best Mail & Copy Center (Avenue R), who printed our raffle
tickets and flyers free-of-charge.
The Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals was on hand to provide low-cost microchipping. We're glad
to report that about 15 pooches received chips.
We gave out more than 75 Halloween gift bags with samples and coupons from Bargain Bow-Wow,
Petco, and Petland Discounts. Frisbees were provided by Best Mail & Copy Center.
The owners of the contest-winning pooches received long-sleeve orange Jerzees sweatshirts declaring
"My Dog's a Winner!" The shirts -- with stylish black lettering -- were generously donated by Alan Bellone
of A Stitch Above.
The following businesses and individuals donated prizes for the
raffle drawing, services, or their time to the event. You can see a full list, including contact information in our archive under Special Events.
Amber Alvarez (Show judge), Claire Angelica, A Stitch Above. Bargain Bow-Wow, Best Mail &
Copy Center, Buckley's Restaurant, Devorah Fong (Show judge), Gentle Touch Dog & Cat Grooming, Gilbert the Magician
and Red the Wonder Dog, Gloria's Dog Beauty Salon, J & R Wholesale Balloon, Kings Plaza Diner-Restaurant, Beth Joy Knutsen (Show emcee), Marine Park Computers, Michael's Pastry Shop, Morris Discount, Natural Balance
Massage & Wellness Center, Noah's Ark Veterinary Practice, Nora's Park Bench Cafe, Petco, Petland Discounts, Suzanne's
Corner Cafe & Deli, and Thunderbird Tepee.
We'd also like to thank the ACC and Nature Center volunteers who sold raffle tickets, all of
the Parks Department personnel who made the event happen, including Ranger Anne and Ranger Stephanie, who came up with the
brilliant idea to have the dogs parade from the Nature Center to Fillmore Avenue.
And what about Pee Wee? Alas, although scheduled to appear, the Brooklyn Cyclones' baby seagull
mascot was unable to make it, much to the disappointment of fans not to mention the gulls of Gerritsen Creek, who'd waited
all week for a glimpse of their hero.

Holiday 2006
Volume 3: Issue 12
Dear Beth,
As 2006 draws to a close, here in NYC we have a lot to
celebrate in terms of progress toward our goal of creating a no-kill NYC. Year Two of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project in NYC
is winding down with impressive results, as many Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) have exceeded their adoption
goals for the year. We are eager to begin our third year of the Maddie's project in January 2007, and want to express our
deep appreciation to Maddie's Fund for its continued belief in, and support of, our programs in NYC.
This year we saw an important advance in NYC's spay/neuter
efforts, when non-profit veterinary clinics at four APOs -- the ASPCA, Animal Care & Control, Bide-A-Wee, and the Humane
Society of New York -- joined the Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project NYC. These organizations greatly enhance our current roster
of veterinarians -- members of the Veterinary Medical Association of NYC -- who are providing low-cost spays and neuters for
pets of NYC residents who have a Medicaid card.
We also cannot end the year without expressing once again our appreciation to the ASPCA, an Alliance founding member and
a crucial supporter of the Alliance's programs. And to each and every Alliance member group, small and large -- and every
veterinarian, every volunteer, every person who donated funds or supplies to the Alliance's efforts, and perhaps most of all,
to those wonderful people who adopted a furry little New Yorker this year -- THANK YOU from the animals whose lives are being
saved as a result of your caring and generosity.
Best wishes to all for a humane holiday and new year.
Jane Hoffman President, Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals
A fundraising costume event on Halloween eve and a first-time appearance in NYC's famous Halloween Parade gave NYC's homeless
animals exceptional exposure this year.
First, on the evening of October 30, dogs dressed as race car drivers, nurses, pumpkins...you name it!...converged on the
Gotham Comedy Club in Manhattan for a Halloween pet costume contest.
The following evening, Halloween night, a very special first-ever float dedicated to NYC's homeless animals made its debut
in the heavily attended Halloween Parade in New York's Greenwich Village.
Halloween Events Raise Funds and Awareness for NYC's Animals
A fundraising costume event on Halloween eve and a first-time appearance
in NYC's famous Halloween Parade gave NYC's homeless animals exceptional exposure this year.
Maddie spread the adoption message to crowds of spectators
at this year's Halloween Parade in NYC's Greenwich Village.
Halloween night, a very special first-ever float dedicated to NYC's
homeless animals made its debut in the heavily attended Halloween Parade in New York's Greenwich Village. As thousands of
revelers and spectators looked on, the float celebrating NYC's homeless animals and rescue groups — sponsored by New
York Tails and its publisher, Diane West — wound its way through the crowded parade route, followed by banner-carrying
representatives from the Mayor's Alliance and numerous animal shelters and rescue groups.
And who got the seat of honor on the float? Maddie, the Maddie's Fund
mascot! From her berth atop the float, Maddie wiggled and waved to the delight of hundreds of thousands of well-wishers. Thanks
to Diane and New York Tails for inviting the Mayor's Alliance and Maddie to join in the celebration for NYC's animals!
THREE OF the premiere events scheduled for you and your pets' Halloween celebrations could be the following. For sure
they'll bring smiles and laughter to the Big Boo and Bark holiday: . On Tuesday, Oct. 31, the granddaddy of all parades, the

oldest, largest and most outlandish Halloween bash, especially for pups, is definitely a must-see ( www.firstrunfriends.org). . Tomorrow, the Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festival in Union Square Park will feature gorgeous homeless animals,

Have you seen the "MetroCard Bicycle Man" in action?
Since July, Andy Padre, a 39-year-old midtown artist, has been
riding the city streets on a bicycle completely covered in MetroCards.
Now ready to take the project to the next level, Padre and 15 of his friends will march in next Tuesday's Greenwich Village
Halloween Parade wearing wedding party costumes that have been cut and pasted completely from MetroCards.
"It's funny,
makes people smile and gets them to think about an everyday thing like a Metrocard as art in a whole new way," said Padre,
who used about 1,000 discarded cards which he and friends collected from the subway.
A city institution now in its
33rd year, the Village parade exalts and encourages the creative and bizarre. This year's grand marshals are the rockers Gene
Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, who are known for their outrageous make-up and sequins.
Animal magnetism will radiate from the first official float, which honors the parade's canine revelers.
"I
wanted to do something to celebrate all of the dogs that walk every year in the parade and promote animal welfare," said Beth
Joy. She and her dog, Bella, will be wearing French maid costumes this year.
"We've marched in the parade for seven
years and there's just nothing else like it," she said.
As goes with the parade's extremely democratic style
of participation -- an estimated 50,000 people march each year -- it is impossible to find any kind of set database describing
those who will be marching.
But expect to see avant-garde puppeteer Basil Twist, who will display his 12-foot-high
white spider puppet from the clock tower of the Jefferson Market Library for the twelfth straight year.
"I entered
the parade when it was still having growing pains, but now it's turned into this massive public art experience, a hugely theatrical
event with the world's most creative people strutting their stuff," Twist said. "I'm truly amazed at how many people remember
and love the spider and come back to see it again and again."
The planning of this year's event has evoked some nostalgia
for the year the parade started, said artistic director Jeanne Fleming.
"This year is all looking back to 1973," Fleming
said during a phone interview at the parade's pre-production headquarters in upstate New York. "KISS was living in the Village
and met each other through an ad in the Village Voice.
And to our surprise, they asked if they could be in the parade
[this year]."

Halloween parade features a float for dogs.
Alert the puparazzi.
Dog lovers will want to bring cameras to record the first-ever dog float at New York City’s Village Halloween Parade
on Oct. 31.
The parade, which airs live on local TV channel NY1, will commence at Spring Street and Sixth Avenue. For years, dog lovers
and their costumed dogs have walked the parade route. This year marks the first time in the parade’s 33-year history
that dogs get a float of their own.

Village
Halloween Parade Draws Throngs To Lower Manhattan
October 31, 2006
For the 33rd
year, Halloween brought colorful costumes and ghoulish ghosts to Lower Manhattan.
Hundreds of thousands of revelers
lined Sixth Avenue for the 33rd annual Village Halloween Parade Tuesday night.
Mild temperatures brought out an even
larger crowd than usual, as an estimated 30,000 revelers marched up Sixth Avenue.
Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley from
the legendary rock band Kiss were the parade's grand marshals.
The parade, which started at Houston Street and made
its way up Sixth Avenue to 23rd Street, was carried live on NY1 News.
NY1's Jill Scott filed the following report
on all the parade action.
It’s always a thrill to be at the Village Halloween Parade and this year was no
exception.
There were ghosts and goblins and everything in between.
And there's nothing like having a front
row seat – Jill Scott had the best one, settling in to watch the parade from the best seat in the house: a New Yorker
dressed as a recliner.
The night literally turned the world upside down for some New Yorkers, as tens of thousands
of people packed the parade route. Some had to duke it out to find a space, while others were just sandwiched in.
A
pair of guys dressed as toast had a real "wry" sense of humor.
From the Jolly Green Giant to Sun-Maid raisins, New
Yorkers got a true taste of Halloween, especially from one parader dressed as a Halloween table, including a plate of what
he called “barf.”
For first
time ever, a whole new group of New Yorkers took part in the parade. Yes this Halloween the pets took center stage with their
own float. And of course with pets comes a reminder from Bob Barker to get them spayed and neutered.
“We
must control the pet population. It’s a real problem,” said a New Yorker dressed as Barker.
And as if
they needed an excuse to dress up, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the group KISS served as the parade's grand marshals and
they said it was nice to be home.
“We are New York boys,” said Simmons. “This is where we came from
and you gotta come back.”
Those who didn't listen to KISS, could get their music from one of the New Yorkers
dressed as an iPod.
Whatever the costume, Halloween night was all about New Yorkers marching to the beat of their
own drum.

A Howl-oween Story
By Laurel Angrist (NYU)
A float designed to celebrate the dogs of the 33rd Annual
Village Halloween Parade took the lead in this year’s event, with an estimated 100 pups marching alongside and 30,000
revelers in tow.
Designed by Beth Joy Knutsen, Sales and Marketing Coordinator for New York Tails
Magazine, the float featured a 15-foot likeness of her Lhasa Apso Terrier, Bella, jumping out of a giant neon orange jack-o-lantern.
It wound down 6th Ave. amidst cheers and barks, with representatives from New York
City’s animal rights and adoption agencies aboard, including The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, the ASPCA and MeetUp.com, an online group that connects
local dog lovers.
“We’re here to support animal adoption,” said Victoria Wells, Manager of Behavior and Training at
the ASPCA, a job that entails evaluating dog personalities and modifying behavior issues to make them adoptable. “We
have a lot of dogs that come from abuse and neglect. We give them a second chance at life,” said Wells.
Claire Angelica, an independent dog rescuer, rode the float with Mouse-Dog, a tiny mongrel she swears is part dog,
part aardvark. Mouse-Dog’s lower jaw was badly mangled in an abusive household, but he now leads a comfortable life
with Angelica in her home in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn.
Maddie-The-Dog, the float’s human mascot, cheered
crowds on along the parade route.
Also on board the float were the champions of this year’s Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, which took place
on Saturday. Natashya Vasic and her dog, Leelu, won Best In Show, even beating out a puppy dressed as fortune cookie. Leelu
had on formal equestrian barding and was being ridden by a tiny headless doll brandishing a silver sword.
“I wanted to do classic Halloween and you can’t get anymore classic than this,” said Vasic.
Crowds ogled after the winners of Tails magazine 2006 Best New York Tail
competition, Karen Bihl and her Chihuahua, Eli, who came
dressed as Paris Hilton and her favorite canine accessory. A policeman barked at them though his loudspeaker and Eli trembled
as a marching band strode past, drums beating and horns blazing.
The obvious star of the float though was Bella, who could not get enough of the crowd’s attention as she danced
on hind legs and gobbled up doggie treats. A showbiz dog with her own display case full of the trophies she’s won, Bella
was Cover Girl of ASPCA Magazine’s 2005 summer issue and has even starred
in an independent film, “Casa Bella.”
“She’s so used to being on stage that she
loves it,” said Knutsen, who books the gigs for Bella Starlet Dog Talent, the animal talent agency she runs.
Bella and Knutsen, dressed in coquettish French maid
costumes, posed for photos with ghoulish folk along the parade route. Crowds cheered them on as the float slinked towards
its final stopping place on 21st St.
Knutsen, who booked the float way back in March, was ecstatic with all the applause.
“It’s Bella’s dream coming to fruition,”
she gushed.

Halloween Parade
11/1/06
By Shonna Carter (Columbia University)
It’s the biggest Halloween event in New York City and this year man’s best friend joined the party, with the first float dedicated
to dogs joining the 33rd annual Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village Tuesday
night.
Celebrate the Dog was one of 42 floats that made
their way up Sixth Avenue on the one mile route while more than 2 million spectators lined the streets.
Beth Knutsen, the float’s organizer said
she had had the idea for a while but decided to follow through this year with her plans to celebrate the year of the dog,
a reference to the Chinese zodiac.
The float
featured a large painting of a pumpkin with a portrait of Knutsen dog Bella, a mixture of Lhasa Apso and Yorkshire
who has appeared in television, movies and print ads. Both were dressed as French maids.
Knutsen said
when she posted plans to host the float the response was overwhelming with dog owners throughout the city requesting to participate.
“It
just turned into a phenomenon,” she said.
On the float
were several doggie contest winners including Eli a chihuahua dressed as Paris Hilton’s famous pooch Tinker Bell. Eli
was this year’s winner in the New York Tails contest and is a finalist in this year’s Milk-Bone competition. MarinePark costume competition winner, Reger, was there
with his owner, Carla Gonzales, Queens. Reger a three-year-old German Sheppard was dressed
as the big bad wolf and Gonzales was little red ridding hood.
“This
is absolutely wonderful, we’re totally excited,” said Gonzales.
Several organizations
trailed the float including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Stray from the Heart, a dog rescue
organization, The Mayor’s Alliance, a non-profit associated
with the city to develop solutions to animal care and control and members of the Yorkie meetup group, from the web-site Meet-UP.com
that connects people with similar interest.
According
to the New York City Department of Health there are approximately 500,000 dogs in the five boroughs.
There were
other dog friendly events in the city like a costume party for pets and their owners at Le Petit Puppy a boutique pet store
in the WestVillage.
Costume stores
traditionally known for human products now include dog costumes because
they say the demand keeps growing.
“Every year it keeps getting bigger and
bigger,” said Fausto Cruz, store manager for Halloween Adventure a costume store in the EastVillage.
Cruz who has been at the store for 10 years says
in the past few years they have doubled the amount of doggie dress-up in the store.
Knutsen seemed elated as the float was set to
head out to face the crowd.

Halloween is lurking just around the corner, and this year the city is boasting a lineup of parades and bashes meant for
masquerading four-legged furry friends like never before.
"It's a way to show the incredible bond between humans and our animals," said upper West Sider Karen Biehl, whose Chihuahua
Eli will compete in several events dressed as Tinkerbell and Liberace, among other costumes, hand-stitched by local doggie
costume designer Ada Nieves ( www.pupcakestudio.com).
But for Biehl, 43, and her 2-year-old adopted dog, it's also about garnering votes. The duo is among the finalists - the
only ones from N.Y.C. - in a national contest to be among the new faces on the 2007 Milk-Bone dog biscuit box.
At 4 pounds, 8 ounces, Eli is the tiniest pooch competing against dogs of 20 pounds or less.
"He may be the smallest one, but I think he has the biggest spirit," Biehl said, of her bitty-sweet pup who she saved while
he was being bounded from home to home.
Dressing a dog in drag can be a hoot, but animal experts warn that not every pet is game for the charade. And the ASPCA
also advises to keep pets away from chocolate and alcohol, which can be fatal in dogs, along with those holiday hazards: electric
cords, aluminum foil and those discarded candy wrappers.
Here's a roundup of some paw-ticularly pet-friendly upcoming, Halloween events:

WOW!! What more can I say... but WOW! What an amazing experience and our very first at that! Stray from the Heart has never
walked in the parade before, and can I just say it was quite the spectacle. New York Tails Magazine (pick up your copy today at your favorite pet place) invited us to join them in a journey through the fantastic, and might
I say if you have never been out to the Halloween Parade in New York City, well.. it's a sight to behold to say the least!
We had a fantastic banner (thanks Ila) just picked up that day for our events and it was easy to see our happy logo doggie
coming from a distance. We also had a terrific group of volunteers come to walk with us holding signs and wearing costmes,
including a couple of our furry friends all dressed up for the spookiest of holidays. I guess they felt bad about missing
out on the Howl-O-Ween Ball, so they wanted to get all gussied up for a night of their own.
Thanks so much to Sheila, Joe, Ila (AKA Chewy), Sofya, Monika, Mary and "Frovis", Lisa, Love, Brian & Quinn-Doo. A
special thanks to Sophia and Mocha (AKA Skunky) for dressing up in thier finest and coming out to wag their tails for the
cameras and dodge that never ending sea of legs! Thanks all of you for hanging out afterwards and mixing and mingling. After
all that walking it was nice to sit and chat (when the ringing in the ears stopped, at least) for a while!
Thanks also go to New York Tails Magazine for just being so awesome and really caring about all the animals in New York (and out)!
If you missed it, well at least we have photos... get ready now for next year!

New York's Village Halloween Parade)
The Theme: Expect a lot of fire imagery as "The Village Hearth" nods to Celtic traditions such as the giant bonfire
which pagan villagers used to build to mark the last night of autumn. This time around, in respect of the fire marshals, the
communal conflagration will be replaced by a fifteen-foot tall cauldron surrounded by dancing squash-blossom puppets—all
engineered by the parade’s chief designer Alex Kahn.
The Route Participants line up from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sixth Avenue, south of Spring Street.
The C, E subway station at Sixth Avenue and Spring Street will be closed for the evening. Try to approach from the south and
the east. The walk, which begins at 7 p.m., continues up the Sixth Avenue to 22nd Street.
Grand Marshals: Gene Simmons impersonators, eat your heart out. The legendary rockers of KISS, who are busily promoting
their new DVD, KISSology Volume One: 1974–1977, will celebrate 33 years of togetherness atop their very own
float. Though the band won't be performing, the aging showmen will be in full makeup and costume with MTV cameras in tow recording
their shenanigans for national broadcast and historic preservation.
Debut Float: The Year of the Dog is acknowledged with a float peopled entirely
by man's best friends. Jeanne Fleming, the parade's artistic and producing director, was happy to include the "nonhuman kingdom,"
but organizers recommend that revelers leave their own costumed canines at home.
The Costumes and the Contest: Last year's festivities featured kissing popes, a giant bowling pin, a posse of Treasure
Trolls, lost FEMA agents, and a duo dressed up as a bottle of soy sauce and a sushi roll. Whether they know it or not, all
participants are scoped out by undercover parade agents who vote for who should win JetBlue tickets, restaurant gift certificates,
tickets to Broadway shows, and a $500 gift certificate to the Fright Catalogue. At the official after-party, held at Webster
Hall, one lucky person will receive a grand prize of $5,000. (Last year's winner was a feathered man on rollerblades who dubbed
himself "The Bird Flu.")
The Crowd: About 2 million spectators (one fourth of the city’s total population), 4 million television viewers
(tuning in to NY1), and 50,000 participants are expected. Organizers say the parade is the world's largest public Halloween
celebration. Because of that, arriving early is essential for onlookers, especially at popular lookout points such as the
corner of Sixth Avenue and West 4th Street. Pedestrians will be allowed to cross Sixth Avenue at both Houston and 14th Streets.
For less congestion and better views, you'll want to head north. Contact the Department of Transportation at 212-442-1700
for more info on street closings.

The Buzz
Kiss to rock parade: The Buzz hears that Kiss — Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, but
no other former members of the ’70s superband — will be the grand marshals of this year’s Greenwich Village
Halloween Parade. Kiss will be in full makeup (which is good, because everybody seems to like them better that way). Actually,
it would be impossible for the former Kiss members to join them, at least in makeup, since after a falling out with their
former band mates, Stanley and Simmons now own the exclusive rights to wear the Kiss makeup in public. Also, their lead float
will include “six women,” specifically requested by Simmons, according to Jeanne Fleming, the parade’s director.
“You’re scooping Page Six on this,” Fleming told us. … And
in a first for the parade, the second float will have dogs and their owners, both dressed in costume. Several “high-profile
dog-rescue groups” will walk along with them. The float is looking for people with dogs in costumes to join them in
order to bring more awareness to dog adoption. To join, meet at 6 p.m. at Spring St. and Sixth Ave. and find Float 2, Bella
Starlet’s Dog Float, right in front of the Kiss float.
