Vulture Handicaps CBS’ ‘Greatest American Dog’
Courtesy of CBS With all entertainment culture officially at a standstill this week,
Vulture turns its attention to the one reality show of the summer that doesn't look completely terrible: CBS' Greatest American Dog. At last, a prime-time television program bold enough to take twelve adorable canines
and rank them in order of quality. After the jump, we take a look at the competitors on GAD's official Website and pick a few early favorites. And, yes, we know the show doesn't premiere for another three weeks, but we wanted to write
about it before The New York Times Magazine does their inevitable cover story.
Courtesy of CBS AndrewBreed: Maltese His story: According to his owner, Andrew is "a perfect companion"
with a "keen ability to make people smile." In other words, he's a bit of a dunce, to put it charitably. He allegedly attends
"special training classes" twice a week "to keep him challenged." Quite frankly, we'll be impressed if he can make it through
an episode without pooping on a carpet. Odds of winning: 100:1
Courtesy of CBS BeaconBreed: Miniature schnauzer Her story: She may be adorable, but Beacon's
laughably unimpressive résumé (highlight: She can ring a bell when she wants to be let outside) makes one wonder whose leg
she humped to get on this show. Odds of winning: 200:1
Courtesy of CBS Bella Starlet Breed: Mixed Her story: Bella Starlet
has a solid CV (she's appeared in commercials and a number of feature films), and is as bilingual as one could reasonably
expect from a dog (she understands the word "sit" in both English and French), but, at 70 dog years, her age could become
a factor. Odds of winning: 10:1
Courtesy of CBS ElvisBreed: Parson Russell terrier His story: The fact that his owner, a rich
Upper East Side doctor, blew $10,000 on Elvis's "Bark Mitzvah" doesn't bode well for his scrappiness. Still, he recently won
first place at the St. Michaels Maryland Terrier Race, which, on paper at least, sounds like a pretty good place to measure
a terrier's agility. He could be a competitor. Odds of winning: 8:1
Courtesy of CBS EzzieBreed: Boston terrier Her story: Finally, a dog who looks like she could
make it through a round of fetch without a lung exploding! According to Ezzie's owner, she's "hyper, highly intelligent, and
high-strung," and "if she were human, she'd be a professional marathon runner." If this show takes athleticism into account
— which it will need to if CBS expects us to take it seriously — she stands a pretty good chance. Odds
of winning: 5:1
Courtesy of CBS GalaxyBreed: English pointer and Border collie mix His story: More than just a
pet, Galaxy is a touring show dog who can do "flips" and "sit-ups," which sounds totally awesome. It's dogs like him that
truly make you wonder how ones like Beacon and Andrew can live with themselves. Odds of winning: 4:1
Courtesy of CBS Kenji Breed: Giant schnauzer Her story She's a tad oafish, and her trick repertoire
is lamentable (sit, down, roll over … zzzzz), but, at 71 pounds, Kenji has a big size advantage and could certainly
rip our throats out. Odds of winning: 8:1
Courtesy of CBS LeroyBreed: Border collie His story: A Renaissance dog if ever there was one,
Leroy can purportedly "shoot baskets and play the piano." His ability to "set the dinner table with his own kitchenette set"
could make him the classiest mammal ever to appear on a reality-television show, but his obvious love of Frisbee saves him
from being completely insufferable. Leroy, if you're reading this, send us an e-mail — we're always looking for new
writers. Odds of winning: 2:1
Courtesy of CBS PresleyBreed: Boxer His story: Presley is playful and energetic, and at 53 pounds,
he could probably fight off a burglar or two, unlike some dogs (Beacon, you're pathetic). But we have to say it — he's
homely, even by Boxer standards. We just hope the other dogs can figure out which end to sniff. Odds of winning:
10:1
Courtesy of CBS PrestonBreed: Purebred Pomeranian Her story: Oh please. Odds of winning:
1,000:1
Courtesy of CBS StarBreed: Purebred Brittany Her story: Ostensibly, Star is what this competition
should be all about. She's smart, extensively trained, and a natural performer. She was part of a team that competed in the
United States Dog Agility Association Nationals, but, an avowed lover of bacon, she's no snob. Also, her owner is a diabetic,
and Star is trained to "sense and alert her when her blood sugar goes low." Man, that's impressive. Odds of winning
3:2
Courtesy of CBS TillmanBreed: English bulldog His story: Tillman can ride a skateboard. Competition over. Odds: Even money Greatest American Dog [CBS] Earlier: Unscripted Apocalypse: The Twenty Worst Reality Shows of Summer
Mutts, a blog by John Woestendiek of The Baltimore Sun
« For pits' sake | Main | Celebs help Dogs in Danger »
CBS has announced the 12 human/dog teams that will be living together and competing on its new series, "Greatest American
Dog" -- and there are only two mutts among them.
If you don't mind suffering through a commercial, a CBS preview of the show is above.
The show, hosted by zoologist Jarod Miller, will follow the 12 teams as they compete in a series of challenges designed
to measure each owners' ability to train their dogs. It premieres July 10 at 8 p.m.
At the end of each episode, a judging panel will eliminate one team. The winning team takes home the show's $250,000 grand
prize.
I think we will be pulling for one of the two mutts -- Bella Starlet, who is described
as a Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, Shih-Tzu, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retreiver and Pomeranian mix.
Here, then, are the teams:
-- Beth Joy, an acting manager from New York City, and Bella Starlet, a 10-year-old
Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, Shih-Tzu, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and Pomeranian mix
-- Bill, a building maintenance employee from Flint, Texas, and Star, a 7-year-old Brittany
-- Brandy, a fashion designer from Orange County, Calif., and Beacon, a 1-year-old Miniature Schnauzer
-- David, a doctor from New York City, and Elvis, a 2-year-old Parson Russell Terrier
-- Elan, an aspiring dog salon owner from Portland, Ore., and Kenji, a 1-year-old Giant Schnauzer
-- J.D., a dog entertainer from Bend, Ore., and Galaxy, a 9-year-old English Pointer Border Collie and Labrador mix
-- Laura, a film producer from Los Angeles, and Preston, a 5-year-old Pomeranian
-- Laurie, a doggy day care owner from Stafford, Va., and Andrew, a 5-year-old Maltese
-- Michael, an aspiring comic from Los Angeles, and Ezzie, a 2-year-old Boston Terrier
-- Ron, a construction manager from Oxnard, Calif., and Tillman, a 3-year-old English Bull Dog
-- Teresa, a dog sitter from Fairfax, Va., and Leroy, a 5-year-old Border Collie
-- Travis, a bartender from Los Angeles, and Presley, a 1-year-old Boxer

"we be honered to be your friend, i am so proud of you, huggies bizkit"
If you've been following the paths of Pop and Buzz, you'll know they were down in LA at the TCA Press Tour that wrapped up today. With panels and parties with all the major
networks, they've met some very cool people, including several contestants from the Greatest American Dog. The five dogs present (left to right: Ezzie, Preston, Beacon, Tillman, and Bella Starlet) were just hanging out in
the cabana with their owners all relaxed . . . and not at all fazed by the attention!
And how excited was I (read: very) when Pop passed along some cute candids she took when meeting Jarod, the show's
host, and several of the furry contestants?!
"I hope you win to be the Greatest American Dog! You can do it! I always watch your show and hope that you do good! Good
Luck!" Candi
"Bella Starlet is an adorable girl! I thought her dress was pretty and you were right when you followed your heart and
stood up for your decision. My Bella won't wear any clothing and actually would not even wear her collar if I let her. Let
Bella Starlet stand out in her natural coat and show those judges that it was a statement dressing up for a party, not anything
else!! Good luck on the show!!" Buttons

Move over Simon, CBS has its own new reality TV show that has its contestants howling, competing, and turning tricks.
They’ve also got Bella Starlet Dog. Bella is author of City Pet Guide’s Life of a Celebupup and will be one of twelve dogs competing for the title of Greatest American Dog.Not an easy feat but we
trust Bella and her mom, Beth Joy Knutsen, will put their best paws forward. Dogs from across the nation from “pageant
dogs” to pups trained at home will live together and compete against each other. Each week, the judges will
eliminate one dog and their owner. The last remaining team will walk away with a $250,000 cash prize and the title of Greatest American Dog. Can you guess who we’re rooting for?! So… on your marks, get set. TiVo! Greatest American Dog premieres THURSDAY, JULY 10th AT 8 PM.To know more about the show and the competition visit: Greatest American Dog. LINKS ABOUT US:
"I have to say I'm a little scared of some of these owners though. One
of them owns a dog she named "Bella Starlet," a Chihuahua, Labrador Retriever, Shih-Tzu, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
and Pomeranian mix at the bottom left. Beth Joy lists her career as "Managing Bella Starlet's career." She even has
a tattoo of Bella on her ankle. Crazy! Also, warning to Beth: Bella's 10. That's 70 to you and
me. And Hollywood doesn't like over-the-hill in mutts any more than in men."
Oscar and I are counting down the days until the first episode of Greatest American Dog, which will happen on July 10th at 8:00pm. Even though Oscar will always be the greatest American dog
in my book, we are pretty excited for the first dog-related reality show. I’d certainly much rather
watch some crazy dog people co-existing for 40 days than see a bunch of desperate women trying to get hitched to a farmer/millionaire/rapper.
There are certain tried and true reality TV formulas that tend to showcase the harsh realities of human nature (THINK:
college kids, booze & no responsibility OR starving people, big $$ and an island), but I think we’re in for a real
treat when 12 dog-obsessed people and their pups try to coexist for 40 days while competing for $250K.

Sure, they all look normal and nice enough in this picture, but I will be severely disappointed if there aren’t a
few crazies in the group. The only disappointing thing so far is that it seems like there are a number of “aspiring
actors/actresses” on the human side of the teams. Oh well…if reality TV really is a sign of an imminent
apocalypse, I say…bring it on!!
There are two local New Yorkers competing for the title of Greatest American Dog - Elvis (a 2-year-old Parson Russell Terrier)
and Bella Starlet (a 10-year-old Toy mix)…oh yeah, and their respective owners - David & Beth Joy.

Best of luck to all of the contestants! What do you think…Oscar for season #2?!?!

Reality show gives dogs chance to be the stars
By MIKE HUGHES • Gannett News Service • July 3, 2008
So far, reality shows may have tested every vital skill.
We've seen people sing, dance, act, fight and cook. We've seen them design clothes and hair and rooms. We've seen them model clothes, eat bugs, lose weight, merely survive.
Is there anything left? Definitely. Until now, most of this has been confined to humans.
Welcome to CBS' new Greatest American Dog, with challenges for dogs and their people. "It becomes more driven, intense and funny than you can imagine," insisted R.J. Cutler, the producer.
Like many people, his relationship with dogs is at a distance. He fondly recalls a cocker spaniel from
childhood.
Jarod Miller, the show's host, recalls his golden retriever. "He was as wiry as I was. That dog was crazy."
For Miller, that dog was part of the crowd. There were always animals around him. "When I was 3 or 4 years
out, I was able to stand there and deer would feed out of my hand," he said. "What I wanted to do was have a zoo."
At 25, he ran the Binghamton Zoo in New York. He didn't have time for that, though. He's too busy with
projects like Greatest American Dog, which assembles a dozen dogs and their owners.
The people vary sharply. There's a doctor, a bartender, a construction manager, a fashion designer and
more. Their dogs vary in:
• Size. "There's a giant schnauzer and there's a Pomeranian and a Maltese,"
Miller said.
• Breeding. Some are pure bred; Bella Starlet mixes Chihuahua, Shih-Tzu, Labrador
retriever, Pomeranian and more.
• Age: Bella Starlet is 10 and Galaxy is 9; some are only 1.
"You can see their excitement and puppy-ness," Miller said.
• Beauty. There are cuddly lap dogs; there's also a boxer and a bulldog. These
mismatched dogs and people are thrown into one house, then given challenges. "In some cases, they don't have any time to prepare,"
Cutler said. "They just do it."
This clicked with him instantly, he said. "CBS had the idea to do a reality show with dogs. I thought it
was an awesome idea."

Who Let the Dogs On? You’d Be Surprised
By LISA BERNHARD
Published: July 6, 2008
IN the Oscar-nominated 1993 documentary “The War Room” the producer R. J. Cutler helped chronicle the political
maneuverings of George Stephanopoulos and James Carville, the savvy architects of Bill Clinton’s presidential run against President George H. W. Bush. Fifteen years later Mr. Cutler finds his lens focused on another ferocious competition:
Photographs by Cliff Lipson/CBS
Two of the teams competing on “Greatest American Dog”: J. D. Platt and the English pointer-border
collie mix Galaxy, top; Elan Hagens and the giant schnauzer Kenji, above.
Can the skateboarding English bulldog Tillman outperform the giant schnauzer Kenji and avoid expulsion from the Canine
Academy?
That Mr. Cutler has gone from the White House to the Dog House with his coming CBS reality show, “Greatest American
Dog,” should not signal the decline of his career.
A blend of “American Idol,” “Big Brother” and “Survivor,” the series, which has its
premiere on Thursday, pits 12 dogs and their owners against one another for a $250,000 reward. As it turns out, competing
presidential candidates and competing dogs (or their caretakers) aren’t so different.
“What they have in common is the shared sense that the prize should be theirs,” Mr. Cutler said.
Within the mansion and grounds outside Los Angeles that have been turned into the Canine Academy for the show, pet-and-human
pairs showcase qualities like loyalty, intelligence and teamwork before a jury of three dog experts and the host, a zoologist
named Jarod Miller. Most tasks are less about brawn than bond. In a personality challenge, for instance, each owner picks
a word out of a hat and then takes a picture of the dog evoking the mood or thought that word represents through props and
expression.
As with children, working with animals can be dicey. In a move that could help avoid a repeat of the controversy last year
surrounding “Kid Nation,” the CBS reality series that drew questions about child neglect (though no charges or
lawsuits were filed), trainers, veterinarians and representatives of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals and the American Humane Association were all on the set to ensure safety. And behind the scenes a second set of so-called
Dream Dogs, closely matching the canine contestants in size, tested each stunt.
In any case, there is plenty of pet pampering. “Survivor”-esque reward challenges mean that winning pairs get
the elaborate Dog Bone Suite, along with the power to banish another team to the backyard Dog House. Naturally, it’s
often the humans who aren’t so well behaved.
“We’ve got our own Omarosa,” said Wendy Diamond, a judge and the founder of Animal Fair magazine, referring
to one of the more controversial contestants on “The Apprentice.” “If you look at this show from a dog’s
perspective, can you imagine having to live with some of these owners? That’s what I was thinking: Oh, that poor dog!”
In at least one case stage mother is a more fitting term than dog owner. Beth Joy Knutsen, a New Yorker, employs four talent
agents for her little mixed-breed Bella Starlet, a veteran dog actress.
“It’s really amazing to be recognized for her achievements,” said Ms. Knutsen, who has a detailed tattoo
of Bella on her leg. “We’ve done so much, and this is the next step in our journey of life together.”
On the show one of Ms. Knutsen’s rivals is David Best, a New York doctor. His life of fancy restaurants and Broadway
theater was “all about me,” he said, until he acquired Elvis, a Parson Russell terrier, and “fell head over
heels for this little dog.”
Calculating that Nov. 9 was Elvis’s 13th birthday (in dog years), Dr. Best held a “bark mitzvah” last
year at Sammy’s Roumanian steak house on the Lower East Side. About a hundred people attended, including the sex expert
Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a friend of Dr. Best’s. Video of the event on the Web led to an invitation to take part in “Greatest American
Dog.”
Another 400 to 500 dogs and owners auditioned for the show, with producers searching throughout the country for a cross
section of breeds and skills. The applicants ranged from house pets to show-dog veterans, though Westminster champions were
not considered.
Mr. Cutler, who is an executive producer, said he had been asked to develop a reality show about dogs by Ghen Maynard,
executive vice president for alternative programming at CBS, after Stu Schreiberg, another of the show’s executive producers,
brought the idea to Mr. Maynard.
“My first reaction was, I can’t believe there isn’t a competition show based around dogs on network television,”
said Mr. Cutler, whose reality credits include “Flip That House” on TLC. “Although, having spent many months
on it, I can tell you there are a lot of challenges in designing and filming it.” He cited the difficulty in creating
competitions that dogs of different sizes, breeds and ages could all handle, adding, “I can see how some might have
been discouraged.”
But Ms. Diamond, a veteran of four failed dog-theme reality pilots and two short-lived cable series, has her own theory
about the paucity of pet-friendly reality series. “There are dog people, and there are not-dog people,” she said,
“and network executives tend to not have that unconditional love.”
Mr. Maynard has a different take. “As much as the animals are characters, reality shows are about people,”
he said. “So if the people aren’t compelling, and if we don’t find the relationships they have compelling,
then all the dog tricks in the world aren’t necessarily going to make an interesting show.”
And in the end the success of “Greatest American Dog” may hinge on how well it taps into a basic human craving.
“I’ve caught myself running down the hallway in my apartment building to get to the door to see Elvis,”
Dr. Best said. “And if you’ve ever been in love, you do that with people, don’t you? There’s one difference:
When the door swings open, that person who loves you could one day say, ‘Get lost.’ ”

Tillman the prime-time pooch competes for honors as 'Greatest American
Dog'
By Kim Lamb Gregory (Contact) Saturday, July 5, 2008
He's got the aerodynamics of a pot roast, but on Thursday, Tillman the English bulldog will show the nation how he can
whip around the pavement on his skateboard as nimbly as any kid.
"We need to figure out how to hook up some wind power to Tillman as he passes by," said Tillman's human, Ron Davis, 39,
of Silver Strand.
Davis and his talented canine will appear with 11 other dogs and their owners from around the nation on a CBS reality show
called the "Greatest American Dog." The 10-episode series, which debuts Thursday at 8 p.m., will feature the 12 dogs and their
owners as they participate in various competitions designed to test what the judges consider to be the characteristics of
the greatest American dog: "courage, loyalty, intelligence, personality, agility and coordination," show producer R.J. Cutler
said.
Colleen Sullivan, vice president of publicity for CBS, said the contestants were chosen from a combination of auditions
and research.
"Our casting department chose from thousands of dogs," Sullivan said. "We also actively went to dog-specific (Web) sites."
Sullivan said casting directors weren't looking for Westminster Dog Show dogs, but rather pooches and owners with personality
and potential. The dogs they chose ranged from pageant dogs to pets like Tillman, who were trained at home.
"The biggest criterion wasn't who knew the most tricks or who had the most professional experience," Sullivan said.
Davis said casting directors contacted him in March after seeing Tillman on the Internet.
"At first I was like, Ahhhhh no,'" Davis said. "The whole reality thing — they can make you look like an idiot or
a jerk, or they can make you look like a saint. It's all in the editing."
But Davis finally agreed to do it. One day before CBS contacted him, the construction manager had been laid off from his
job due to the housing slowdown. As the married father of an 8-year-old boy, Davis had to consider his family, and the $250,000
prize that he and Tillman would be competing for.
"When you don't have a job, a quarter of a million dollars is a lot of money," Davis said. "When you have a job, a quarter
of a million dollars is a lot of money."
The taping
Tillman, Davis and the other dogs and owners stayed together in an Agoura Hills estate for the six weeks while the show
was taped. The producers renamed the mansion "Canine Academy" for the duration.
Tillman is more of a pavement dog, so the grass surrounding the estate was a new experience for him, Davis said.
"For Tillman to see grass was a treat," Davis said. "He just kind of stared at it. Then he went to random places to poo
and pee at will."
The show already has been taped, so Davis and Tillman know the outcome, but Davis is under contractual obligation not to
reveal it.
And Tillman doesn't seem to care.
"His goal in life is, Where's my skateboard,'" Davis said.
The show consists of daily competitions with weekly eliminations determined by three judges: Wendy Diamond, editor in chief
of Animal Fair Magazine; Allan Reznik, editor at large of Dog World and Dog Fancy magazines; and Victoria Stilwell, hot off
the TV series "It's Me or the Dog."
The show will be hosted by zoologist/television personality Jarod Miller.
Davis can't speak about the show too much, but he did say there were definite people dynamics and definite doggy dynamics.
"There was one of everybody this wonderful nation of ours has to offer," Davis said. "Having people away from their families
some people can handle that; some people cannot handle that."
During the taping, Davis said he did miss his wife of 10 years, Erika, and their son, Reef. Tillman slept with Ron every
night in a snoring lump at the foot of the bed — just like he always does — and he had his skateboard, so his
world was more intact.
Life after reality TV
As they wait for the show's premiere, Tillman and Davis continue to skateboard almost every day and do some skimboarding,
which Tillman took up last summer.
"Last summer, when the heat wave hit, I got a little worried for Tillman to skateboard," Davis said.
To make sure that his dog didn't get overheated, Davis bought him a skimboard, took him out to the beach near their home
and, in just a short time, Tillman figured out that this was just like skateboarding, only with splashing.
Davis is trying to teach Tillman to surf, too. But he tends to sink like a rock, so Davis has purchased a life jacket for
him.
"He's built like a wide receiver for the NFL," Davis said.
Davis said he has no idea how he and Tillman will come off on the show because he hasn't seen the finished product, but
he'll be watching the reality show with interest.
"People ask me, Would you do it again?'" Davis said. "I tell them, Ask me again in six months.'"
Tillman rides his skimboard at Silver Strand beach. He took up skimboarding last summer when it was too hot
to skateboard.

Greatest American Dog
"According to my source, Beth, the ONLY RESCUED dog on Thursday evening's Greatest American Dog, 8PM, CBS, is BELLA. When
I adopted Bella to Beth, the dog was named Maggie. Maggie came from a family who, as best I recall, didn't
want her because their son didn't walk her on time after school, as he had as promised to do! Old excuse. Now,this
mixed breed, and apparently the show's producers did the DNA, has her own web site (www.Bellastarletdog.com), does photo shoots, commercials, movies, TV, and appears at various causes for pet welfare. If you're up
early, catch some previews of one of my fine rescues, and more Bella (she'll always be Maggie to me) in the July 21 People
magazine, and also, Entertainment Weekly. So catch Bella and her pet person, Beth, on Greatest American Dog
Thursday. Goes to show you: you never know where one adoption will lead." Claire July 9, 2008

CBS Marketing Chief George Schweitzer has been unleashed—and that means he’s up to some old tricks.
The man who once put the Eye logo on individual eggs now is enlisting cute canines to serve as live advertising models
for the network. It’s all part of Mr. Schweitzer’s effort to get viewers to sample “Greatest American Dog,”
CBS’ R.J. Cutler-produced reality show that premieres Thursday.
Over the next 48 hours or so, citizens of New York City will begin seeing a slew of dogs walking the streets while clad
in vests and collars bearing advertising for the new CBS show. The pups won’t be popping up randomly: CBS has hired
dogwalkers to help the doggies strut their stuff.
Mr. Schweitzer calls the stunt “dog-vertising.”
But that’s not all the network has planned, doggone it:
--CBS has turned a number of Manhattan hot dog stands into “Greatest American Dog” billboards, complete with doggie
umbrellas, napkins and menus.
--Supermarket shoppers in select Los Angeles and New York grocery stores will be greeted by loud barking when they stroll
by the pet food aisle. CBS has installed motion sensors that make the pet sounds and then play a 30-second video ad when shoppers
come closer.
--CBS had a heavy presence in movie theaters over the weekend, running in-theater movie ads for “Dog” during
big films such as “Wall-E” and “Wanted.” Movie advertising is standard for big cable premieres but
rare for summertime network reality shows.
--The Eye network isn’t rolling over and playing dead on the Internet. It has struck a promotional partnership with
Dogster.com—“the Facebook for dogs,” Mr. Schweitzer said—to hype “Dog.”
In addition to banner ads and video teasers on the sit, Dogster will create pet profiles for all of the show’s contestants
and talk up the show with its “Dog Blog.”
“We’re hoping for promotional obedience,” said Mr. Schweitzer, unleashing the first of many, many doggie
puns during the course of a 10-minute phone interview.
The executive said “Dog” has been the network’s “top summer (marketing) priority for many weeks
now,” in part because CBS believes the show has a huge potential audience.
“There’s a great base of people out there who would do anything for their dogs,” Mr. Schweitzer said.
“Our motto is, ‘If you have a dog or have even just seen a dog, this show is for you.’”
Goaded by a reporter, Mr. Schweitzer said CBS has high hopes for “Dog.”
“The PPM, puppy people meter, is very important to us,” he said. “We hope to overindex with puppies using
television.”
Yes, but what of that old saw that CBS skews a bit too, um, Old … Yeller.
“It’s true. We do well with sheepdogs and golden retrievers,” Mr. Schweitzer conceded. “But they’ve
got much more purchasing power. Those Milk-Bone Seniors are expensive.”

Oklahoman gives 'Greatest American Dog' a go
By Penny Soldan TV Editor
Travis Brorsen of Perry plays himself in "The Greatest American Dog.” So does his companion, Presley.
The part-time actor and bartender did not set out to star in the new CBS competition series premiering at 7 p.m. Thursday. He and his dog were discovered for it.
"It's the old Hollywood story about being at the right place at the right time,” said Brorsen, 29, who moved to California after graduating from Oklahoma State University in 2001 to pursue his acting dream. "Presley and I were hiking one day in Runyon Canyon, which is a quarter-mile from my house. A girl named Suzanne stopped me and said, ‘You're not going to believe this,
but they're casting a reality show on CBS about dogs and owners. Is that something you would be interested in?'
"I said, ‘no, not really.' She was just the sweetest girl, she had her dog there, and she started telling me about
the show. So I said I would be interested in entertaining the idea.”
Turns out Suzanne was a production assistant, and Brorsen and Presley happened to fit the idea for one of the final spots on the show.
Less than three weeks before filming began, Brorsen found himself and his boxer on board as one of the show's 12 teams of two.
A few of the other contestants are professional dog trainers. One of the dogs is a TV star. Brorsen and Presley, however, represent those who don't have a lot of training.
Luckily, the series is not looking to award the best in show or the top agility competitor. It is more about the bond the
dog and owner form over the course of the series.
Three judges will monitor the interaction between the teams of dogs and owners that will be living together and competing
against each other in challenges. One team will be eliminated each week, and the last team remaining will win $250,000.
"The money would be great at this point, because living in L.A. is not as cheap as living in Oklahoma,” Brorsen said. "But at this point, I don't feel winning is realistic.
"What is realistic is getting to bond with my dog, which is what the competition is based on in the first place.
"We can't focus on the grand prize and winning the whole thing. We've got to focus on getting there without Presley running
away.”
Presley, who is 16 months old, is better behaved than that. He was born in Perry to Madi (owned by Brorsen's sister) and Duke (owned by his brother-in-law).
Brorsen hadn't had a pet since the eighth grade. He didn't want to bond with another animal after the pig he showed at the county
fair was sold to market.
"I never wanted to let myself feel like that about an animal again,” he said. "But I'm very active, and I decided
what the heck. Let's see if I can figure out what the best friend with a dog thing is all about.”
That is why Brorsen said yes to doing a reality series.
"Going in, I was a little skeptical of reality shows,” said Brorsen, who played a Marine on "JAG,” a lawyer on "Desperate Housewives” and a soldier on "Over There.” "But I have a lot of friends who have done reality shows, and I have not heard
one bad thing as far as the experience goes.
"So for me, it was the the first time I could be myself and not worry about lines. And it's a great opportunity for me
to come out with a new best friend.”
