DOGUST THE FIRST EVENT FOR NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE:
Happy DOGust the First Animal group designates the first day of August as a national birthday for shelter dogs. Posted:
August 1, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT
Many rescue dog owners celebrate their pet's birthday the date on which they adopted the animal. Now, they can designate
a unified celebratory date with the unveiling of DOGust the First. Recognizing that the actual birth dates of most shelter
dogs are unknown, North Shore Animal League America encourages adopters and shelters to embrace the first day of the eighth
month as a universal birthday for rescue dogs everywhere. Spokesperson Beth Ostrosky said that while often times the ages
of rescued dogs are identifiable, their true birth dates are unknown. "A birthday celebration is an opportunity to express
our sentiments for one another," she said in a statement, adding, "Now we have a day set aside to honor them and return the
unconditional love and adoration they give us." A DOGust the First celebrity-studded birthday bash takes place Friday at
the NSALA shelter, with the shelter's cats as honored guests. The shelter dogs will blow out the candles on a "bone" cake. In
addition, there will be a humane education program for children offered by Rescue Ink, the Long Island-based animal rescue
and humane education group. The guest list also includes Beth Joy Knutsen and Bella
Starlet Dog, competitors on the current CBS network show, "Greatest American Dog." Eli the Chihuahua, pet celebrity
and the 2007 Milkbone Dog Biscuit box model, is also scheduled to join the festivities.
"Thank you too Beth and Bella – you were both fantastic and looked cuter than ever! Check out Getty Images

CBS’ decision to bring Greatest American Dog to Wednesdays

CBS to take a rare win in the viewers. Meanwhile, the demos still belonged to FOX.

King DOGust the First to Declare Universal Birthday for Shelter Canines
North Shore Animal League America Hosts Celebrity-studded Birthday Celebration on Newly Proclaimed
“DOGust the First”
July 28, 2008, Port Washington NY - Pet lovers at North Shore Animal League America acknowledge that the actual
birth dates of most rescue dogs are unknown. To give these wonderful animals their much deserved recognition and celebration,
they are are holding a first annual doggie birthday bash on August 1, 2008, to be known hereafter as DOGust the First. They
will be declaring the first day of the eighth month of 2008 as DOGust the First, a universal birthday for rescue dogs everywhere.
To glorify the occasion, a very special canine, “King DOGust the First”, will herald the celebration for all his
shelter dog friends, with the shelter’s cats as honored guests.
The DOGust the First birthday party, open to the public, starts at 11 AM at the shelter, 16 Lewyt St., Port
Washington, and will feature refreshments, games and goodie bags for all adopters. There will be a presentation of animal-related
topics by Animal League experts and a humane education program for children offered by Rescue Ink. The Animal League will
offer a 50% discount for all adopters beginning Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 3.
Beth Ostrosky, Animal League spokesperson, will host the event, with her own “best friend”
Bianca, helping King DOGust the First greet partygoers. Celebrity friends of the Animal League will join Beth, King DOGust
the First, and the shelter’s dogs to blow out the candles on a spectacular “bone” cake. The list includes:
- Mýa - Grammy award-winning recording artist and actress
- Rescue Ink - the Long Island-based animal rescue and humane
education group, known for their tough-guy images and hearts of gold when it comes to animals
- Josh Flitter – teen actor, star of the Nancy Drew
Movie and the upcoming Ace Ventura 3: Pet Detective;
- Vivien Cardone – teen actress, “A Beautiful
Mind”, the WB series Everwood, and starring soon-to-be released family film, All Roads Lead to Home
- Brandon Hannan – teen actor, The Sopranos and appearing
an upcoming feature film Our Lady of Victory with Ellen Burstyn;
- Hallie Kate Eisenberg – teen film, Broadway and commercial
actress;
- Eli the Chihuahua - pet celebrity, the 2007 Milkbone Dog Biscuit
box model
- Beth Joy Knutsen and Bella Starlet Dog - competitors on the
current CBS network show, Greatest American Dog.
While often times the age of animals is identifiable, their actual birth dates are not. ”A birthday celebration
is an opportunity to express our sentiments for one another. These wonderful animals are so full of life and love, and live
to please us,“ said Ms. Ostrosky, adding “Now we have a day set aside to honor them and return the unconditional
love and adoration they give us, day after day. These sweet animals crave our affection and company, so we can imagine the
warm feelings they will experience from all the extra attention on their special day, DOGust the First.”

'Greatest American Dog' becomes 'America's Next Top Dog Model'
By Liz Pardue
July 31, 05:42 PM
First of all, I apologize for the tardiness of this recap! I didn't realize that Greatest American Dog had aired one night early until I was headed out the door for work this morning. So for just this week, let's pretend it's
still airing on Thursday nights. Cool? Cool. Tonight's all about personality, and we begin with some owners showing their
personalities as Travis and Laura flirt adorably and Brandy makes an ass out of her jealous self. Sigh. (Spoilers ahead...)
Dog Bone Challenge: "Take it or Leave it," a sort of Newlywed Game in which owners must guess whether
their dogs will take or leave several different objects. Preston and Galaxy are the final two dogs, and J.D. takes the day
by guessing that Galaxy will take the tofu (yum!). He sends Travis to the Dog House, which still doesn't look that bad to
me.
You guys, this show totally makes me want a bulldog. Watching Tillman paddle around in the pool with his little life jacket
on was magical. And watching him drink and throw up water and fart in the pool was surprisingly hysterical (apparently I'm
eight years old). And we already know he can rock a skateboard. What can't he do?
Best in Show Challenge: Photo shoot! Man, my experience recapping America's Next Top Model
is going to come in totally handy here. Smile with your eyes, dogs! Be fierce! They'll be trying to match a randomly drawn
personality trait in the photo.
J.D./Galaxy: "Sneaky." J.D. gets some props ready in advance to set up an outdoor-like area for Galaxy
to sneak through, and it's perfect. The photo has the body language down, and the judges love it.
Bill/Star: "Stubborn." It's a tough word, and Bill doesn't feel like he's creative enough to pull it off.
Poor Star senses his nerves and has trouble performing, and his idea of her holding a leash just isn't that interesting. As
their comfort level increases, the shoot goes more smoothly and Bill really enjoys himself. Aww. The picture of her refusing
to budge as a leash pulls on her turns out great, the judges love it, and Bill's joy is palpable.
Beth Joy/Bella Starlet: "Mischievous." Okay, I'm no Beth Joy fan, but this shoot is so cute it makes me want to
dognap Bella Starlet. She's next to a spilled jar of dog treats, doing a very convincing "Who, me?" These girls are
definitely in their element. The final photo, of Bella licking around her mouth, is outstanding and the judges love it.
Teresa/Leroy: "Angry." Teresa is worried, because Leroy always looks happy. Thus, she goes about doing
things to make him angry. When she goes to stick a hose blowing air in his face, he's had enough and nips her on the hand
(rightfully so). Laura, the generous soul that she is (too generous, if you ask me), shows Teresa how to use "snarl bands"
to make him look mad. Ooh, Laura, I'm not sure I'm down with that.
At the shoot, Leroy gets scared by the camera and the water/grapefruit juice Teresa's spraying at him, but she pushes him
off her and makes him continue, using the snarl bands, which he clearly hates. BOOOOOOOOOO. The photographer doesn't look
happy. Though the final photo is very effective, the judges hate that she used snarl bands. Teresa lies and says he doesn't
mind them, but the judges are pissed. Laura looks visibly guilty, but Teresa doesn't sell her out.
Laurie/Andrew: "Curious." Laurie uses a telescope and a book as props, and it seems a little too gimmicky
to me. The judges love it, though. Sigh.
Travis/Presley: "Joyous." Travis has Presley jump up in the air a lot, and gets some great shots. Presley
really does look happy in the picture, but the judges are mixed on the photo, with some feeling it's too generic.
Brandy/Beacon: "Loving." Beacon isn't feeling the love and won't cooperate, and Brandy starts crying.
The photo is just a picture of Beacon looking up in front of a white background, and the judges are split 2-1. I'm with the
haters, personally--I'd have no idea what it was trying to portray if you didn't tell me first.
Laura/Preston: "Regal." Laura gives Preston a haircut so that only his feet and tail and head are poofy, and he
looks super cute. And regal. Like the tiny, poofy king of Cutesylvania. The final photo looks a bit more quizzical than regal
because his head is tilted, unfortunately, and the judges aren't digging it.
Ron/Tillman: "Lazy." Because Tillman already does a pretty good "lazy," Ron chooses to keep it natural
and not to prepare. At first, Tillman's a little antsy, but he quickly manages to capture the mood while lying on couches
and chairs. The final photo is pretty basic (and not nearly as lazy as Tillman can be), and the judges think it's boring AND
a bad photo.
In the green room, Brandy is talking about things she would have done differently with her photo when Travis tries to reply
with something he would have done with his. Brandy snaps back, "Can we focus on me?" Wow. To his credit, Travis immediately
comes back with "Yeah, let's do. It might be the last time you're here." Snap!
I kind of wish they would show some of the judges' deliberations so that we had a better understanding of what they think
is important behind the scenes. I also thought they should have used the photographer as a special guest judge, since she
really saw how the dogs and trainers interacted. Ah, well. "Best in Show" goes deservedly to J.D. and Galaxy, whose photo
will appear in Dog Fancy. The bottom three are Ron/Tillman, Teresa/Leroy, and Brandy/Beacon.
Ron and Tillman are out, which totally sucks. I mean, they obviously aren't the best, but Teresa abused her dog to the point
of his biting her this week, and then just kept on going. Forget the snarl bands and the air hose--she sprayed him in the
face with acidic water and then shoved him away when he got scared. AWFUL. Fare thee well, Tillman. I hope to see your skateboarding
and farting antics on a CBS sitcom sometime soon, perhaps as a lead in to Two and a Half Men. I'd totally
watch it.
What did you think of Teresa's behavior, and Laura's use of snarl bands? Do you think Tillman was the right choice
to go home?

Beth and Bella Starlet, That was a very difficult competition. The judges are very hard to please. But you both looked
very pretty – the yellow dress was especially becoming. Keep up the good work – we are all behind you both.

Dog! :) However, IMO the judges were 2 harsh on ep 2 re: Bella's clothing. If they didn't want you to clothe her during the
challenge they should have said so @ 1st. (Actually, I think they and the others were jealous of her clothing). ;( She's so
well mannered and much better behaved than my two furkids - both rescues (miniature poodle & Chi mix).
Best of

"Greatest American Dog" August 05, 2008 Full disclosure: I am a cat guy. Have always been a cat guy.
I grew up in a house filled with cats with cutesy cat names like Fluffy, Foo Foo, and Mr. Whiskers. So feline-friendly people
like me are probably not the target audience for CBS' latest reality entry, “Greatest American Dog.” Still, let
me say this: This is one seriously ridiculous reality show. The goings on take place at somewhere called the Canine Academy,
complete with huge hedges trimmed in the shapes of fire hydrants and other related treats. There, dog-obsessed people and
their pets compete in Dog Bone Challenges to win a Golden Bone Key that gives them access to the Dog Bone Suite, and no, I
swear I am not making any of this up. Oh, wait, it gets even better – or, worse, as it may be. The winner of the Dog
Bone Challenge must also select one competitor to be sent to – you guessed it – the Dog House, which is an actual
dog house out in the yard where he or she must sleep with their pooch. Obviously, there is some appeal to this show, because
it is doing decently in the ratings. But who is watching, exactly? Are they dog fans watching these fellow dog-crazed competitors
out of some sort of solidarity? Are they cat people mocking dog people for looking so silly on national television? Are they
dogs themselves, who finally have a reality show to call their own? I don't know. Personally, and this comes from someone
that actually tried to take his cat out on a leash once in Washington Square Park – not my proudest moment, by the way
– the whole thing kind of creeps me out. Pets are great. Pet are awesome. And they should be handled with respect and
love. But training them to do stupid tricks and then yelling at them when they don't perform, as some contestants do, is taking
it a bit far. Is this supposed to be inspirational? Is it comedy? Probably depends on who you ask. But if you ask me, this
show is for the… Well, you know. – Dalton Ross Entertainment Weekly

Beth Joy/Bella Starlet: Broadway. Bella's dress goes way over the line of acceptable for me, but the
dance isn't too bad. Bella doesn't seem totally on top of some of the choreography, but with more rehearsal it probably would've
been fine. At one point Beth Joy grabs Bella's paws and dances around, which is pretty ridiculous (but not as ridiculous as
when she's all "Thank you, thank you!" at the end, even though no one's clapping). The judges like Beth Joy's enthusiasm,
but don't think it went as well as it could have.

'Greatest American Dog' recap: Salvador Doggy Aug 14, 2008, 11:56 AM | by Mandi Bierly Categories:
'Greatest American Dog', Animals, Mini TV Watch, Reality TV, Television As if having to watch Greatest American Dog instead
of the Olympics wasn't painful enough, last night's episode featured the pups painting. Why do dogs need to paint, and why
do judges need to critique their work? Even I, who lost her s--- (in a good way) when she read that straight-to-DVD Anacondas
3: The Offspring stars David Hasselhoff, couldn't find the joy in this. Here's what happened: - With Brandy gone, Travis was
finally free to make googly eyes at Laura, though Laura appeared to be putting the moves on Travis' Boxer, Presley. - Dog
Bone Challenge: The week's theme was intelligence, and the dogs had to find their way around a three-wall structure to a plate
of food. Though Beth Joy was confident that mutt Bella Starlet would win — Bella Starlet once took an IQ test and she
was smarter than Beth Joy — Bill's Brittany, Star, did it in the fastest time, 8.34 seconds. Bill repaid Teresa for
her kindness last week by offering her the Suite and the leg-up in the Best in Show Challenge — painting a picture that
best represents the bond you have with your dog, with only the dog being allowed to actually apply the paint. Before we move
onto that, can we just discuss how whipped Laurie's Maltese, Andrew, is? He wouldn't leave her side for chicken and bacon.
Is he the most well-trained dog or far too codependent? - Painting was difficult for everyone, but really, it tested the human's
intelligence more than the dog's. My early favorites, Laura and Pomeranian Preston (pictured), struggled not because he's
a tiny dog, but because Laura had him nudge over an entire bottle of paint that flooded underneath her stencil. To deflect
attention from her failure, Laura threw Beth Joy under the bus for putting sponges on Bella Starlet's paws — which made
her yelp a couple of times. Bella Starlet is a rescue dog, who has issues with her front paws being touched, period. Travis
later came to Beth Joy's defense, assuring the judges that she was protective of Bella Starlet and had simply been helping
her through her phobia. (Think Laura gave Travis her number after that?) Laurie and Andrew and JD and English Pointer Border
Collie Galaxy rounded out the bottom three because Laurie was unimaginative and JD didn't realize that he put the letter stencils
on Galaxy's jacket backwards. (Honestly, I can't blame him for trying to pretend that he'd wanted her to roll out FUN as NUF
as part of his play theme. In front of judges, you're supposed to pretend mistakes were intentional. Sometimes, at least.)
In the end, Laura and Preston got the boot, while Teresa and Border Collie Leroy, who had a "dog art instructor," took Best
in Show. (Who bought Teresa's explanation that the moon represented Leroy's ability to send her over it when he barked? PLEASE.)
So, what was your favorite moment from this episode: Galaxy kissing JD during the elimination ceremony (nice to see her do
something spontaneous), Travis admitting to the judges that he's a commitment-phobe (Presley is the first being he hasn't
run from), or the preview for next week (puppies!)? And whose side are you on in the case of "Pawcasso": Laura's or Beth Joy's?

Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt beth joy kind of do the same thing
in front of the judges when they got after her for putting clothes on her dog? She brought Laurie and Andrew into it becuz
andrew had top knots or something on his head. What goes around comes around Einstein
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST You call it whipped, most call it trained. Firstly, NO ONE should ever
encourage their dog to run off and eat random food sitting on the ground. That's a good way to get your dog killed. Magdalen
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST Maybe it's because Victoria Stilwell is a judge (she does a lovely dominatrix-cum-dog
trainer on "It's Me or the Dog"), or maybe it's because they aren't rewarding J.D.'s arrogant assumption that he and Galaxy
will win, but I still love this show. Can't wait for the gloves to come off next week between Wendy & Victoria. I hope
Allen has Kevlar on under his shirt...
kristhediva Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST I've met Beth Joy way before she was on this show and in her
defense, she would never, EVER do anything to hurt Bella Starlet. True she can be a little nutty, but she is totally and completely
in love with her dog. She very careful about what Bella is sensitive to and it was just crappy of Laura to call her out like
that. Jason
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST Travis defended BethJoy b/c Laura was getting to close
and he doesnt want anyone to know he likes Larry's, not Laura's. Paw-lease!
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST This show has so much potential, but CBS is totally wasting it on ridiculous
tests. What does painting have to do with the intelligence of a dog? This was the stupidest contest yet, and they've had several
bad ones. The dogs are so much fun to watch, and my 5-year-old loves this show, so I'll keep watching. But paw-lease CBS...
fix the show next year!!! How about judging them on something that actually has to do with the D-O-G and not the creativity
of the owner.
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST Whose idea was this show. I like dogs, but come on! And they actually
dedicated a tv watch to it and I clicked on it! danielle
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST I think watching Laura backstage gave Travis the perfect excuse to run
for the hills (next to Presley's footprints under the beaming sun of course). Talk about cutthroat and totally unnecessary.
The look on her face when Travis defended Beth Joy was priceless. Of course maybe Travis was just bothered by her wearing
what looked like waders with a sundress. I'm glad to see Travis wasn't fooled by her obvious fawning over Presley. Presley's
an adorable boxer, but you can't convince me that a woman who paints a different colored mohawk on her dog every day would
sincerely love a sloppy boxer mush. azjudyann
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST Kelly, I totally agree with what you said. When Tillman left the show,
I left the audience. I only keep up with it now by reading the recaps. I can't stand half of the dog owners left on this show
and think the judges need to be severely reminded that they aren't judging the Westminster. This show isn't that important.
Jennifer
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST I think she probably could have done a decent painting without forcing
her dog to use her paws, but the show does seem to pressure the owners to do things that aren't in the dogs' best interest.
Teresa should have been kicked off for her "snarl" band a couple of weeks back. I like Travis/Presley (more of them should
have stood up for Beth Joy), and Bill/Star, but I think JD thinks pretty highly of himself - I hope he realizes what a great
dog he has. These dogs are being forced to do some pretty stupid things - and it looks like they'll be purposely stressed
again next week. And all for the owners' egos. Kelly
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST Is this show still on? It had so much potential when it started, and now
has proven to be a flop. This show was over for me when they booted Tillman! tickles
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST I don't think laura went home because of the painting...she went home
because of what she tried to do to Beth Joy. any idiot can see that beth Joy is besotted with Bella Starlet. I liked Laura's
little dog...he was adorable. I also really like Andrew. But I thought that Laurie's picture looked too "perfect"...no mistakes?
I thought that was a little sketchy. Travis is a gentleman...very impressed. But I still miss Tillman! TsuKata
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST I honestly think Laura would have done better if she would have explained
to the judges that she had an elaborate plan with stencils that ended up failing because she didn't anticipate how much the
paint would spread on the canvas, so things that were supposed to be shapes turned out as blobs, and since they were only
given one canvas (which I'm assuming was the case given that no one seemed to start over when they had an early mistake),
she couldn't go back and correct it, so she had to work with it as best as she could. I don't know if taping sponges to a
dog's paws is "helping the dog work out" their abuse issues. It seems like its own kind of abuse to me, but this show has
made very clear that it's totally fine with making the dogs do really darn near abusive stuff so long as it's part of a challenge...but
heaven forbid an owner do something that was allowed in a challenge but isn't specifically part of the new challenge. I love
this show, but the judging is really suspect IMO. Melanie
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST I'm not a Beth Joy fan by any means, but let's face it, Laura ran into
trouble because she didn't start the painting until 3 hours before they were to be complete (not the night before like everyone
else). Throwing Beth Joy under the bus was really weak. And good for Travis for sticking up for her! As for JD, I still think
the guy is a tool! I think Galaxy was kissing him because she thought she was in trouble (her attempt to appease the alpha
male) and then he clearly acted irritated by it. Kartent
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST I'm personally looking forward to the smackdown between the two ladies
judges next week! Travis is a knight in shining armour *sigh* How many men would go against a girl he has a budding 'thing'
for to defend a hapless girl that he has no personal interest in? Honestly, that boy is a true gentleman. majigail
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST I could really do without Beth Joy, but Laura was a little sketchy. I
was shocked to see Travis defend Beth Joy. I'm still willing to let him and Presley follow me home anyday though. Chris
Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST And I preferred JD's painting over Teresa's. Was their critique of JDs
a put-on or what? Chris
Note from Donna: Hi, you 2 are awesome together, I LOVE ShihTzu's!I'm actually looking to adopt another

August 13, 07:39 PM
I'm gonna be straight with you guys right now: I'm coming from a happy "hour" that lasted more than three hours, and I'm a
wee bit buzzed. Plus, I'm totally sleep-deprived from staying up late to watch gymnastics. My theory is that it'll make Greatest American Dog 100% more enjoyable. Either that, or I'll start sobbing halfway through about how adorable the dogs are, and how much
I wish I had a puppy. Could go either way.
We rejoin the trainers as they discuss Brandy's ouster. Travis's reaction to her absence: "Who am I gonna make cry every
day, and then cheer up every day?" Oh, Travis. I love you mostly for your awesome dog and your good looks, but the sense of
humor definitely doesn't hurt. If it doesn't work out between you and Laura, call me! Sadly for my prospects with Travis,
those two are totally in love. It's cute.
Dog Bone Challenge: "Doggy IQ," in which dogs have to figure out how to get to treats on the other
side of a wall. Bella Starlet rocks it hardcore, and Beth Joy admits that Bella Starlet took an IQ test once that implied
Bella was smarter than she was. You took the words right out of my mouth, sweetie. Galaxy is also very speedy, but Andrew
fails completely. Laurie says he just isn't food motivated, but he also didn't respond to her "go get it" command, so it seems
like she's making excuses a little. Star, though, is twice as fast as anyone else. Bill, very fairly, chooses to give the
Dog Bone Suite to Teresa, who gave it up to him last week. Aww.
Best in Show Challenge: "Salvador Doggy," in which dogs must create a painting that represents
the bond between owner and dog. They'll be judged on creativity of concept and use of tools. Huh. At first I wasn't sure it
had too much to do with training ability, but there's actually a lot of creativity and skill involved in getting your dog
to paint a set design, it turns out!
Teresa has the use of a dog art instructor, who helps her out a lot with the use of stencils. The judges
like the technique and definition in the painting, and we don't see Teresa mention that Bill allowed her to use an instructor.
Bill is really worried about the challenge, and chooses to keep it simple. The final painting isn't too cohesive,
but is very meaningful (if grade school-style). The judges thought it was predictable, and weren't sure he used enough techniques.
Travis also uses stencils, and the final painting is really nice. Lots of good, solid color, and a great,
meaningful theme. The judges like it, but again aren't feeling the technique variety. Geez, how many ways are there to get
a dog to paint? Beth Joy makes a crazy outfit for Bella Starlet (surprise!) with sponge shapes on it to paint
with, and improbably enough, it totally works. The nickname "Pawcasso," however, does not, nor does her technique of putting
paint on Bella's paws. Bella gets upset and yelps a bit, though the final result is okay. The judges really like it, but the
other contestants feel like she didn't "work through" Bella's paw issues so much as force Bella through.
Laura comes up with an over-ambitious concept, and has some serious trouble carrying it out. In fact,
it's pretty much a mess. The judges think it "sucks," and Laura immediately throws Beth Joy under the bus for making Bella
Starlet cry. On the one hand, fair enough, that seemed awful. On the other hand, your painting was terrible because you couldn't
figure out how to get Preston to paint, Laura, and plenty of owners managed that without upsetting their
dogs. The judges agree, and think she could have done better. Beth Joy throws down when they get backstage, but no one claws
anyone's eyes out.
Laurie, on the other hand, seems to do a great job getting Andrew to paint. The painting, though, is more
like a diagram. A very well-made diagram, but a diagram nonetheless. The judges agree that it's more of a poster than a painting.
J.D. has a bit of trouble with his initial technique concept, but the final painting is so chaotic that it
almost works for me. The judges, however, disagree. They dislike that the words he used turned out completely scrambled, despite
the positive spin he tries to put on it.
Teresa and Leroy win the challenge for a painting that reflected their relationship and used great symbolism. The judges
give Beth Joy a chance to defend herself, and she tearfully says that she'd never do anything to hurt Bella Starlet. Travis,
of all people, backs her up. Yes! Travis and Laura are SO over. I totally have a shot now! The judges name Laura/Preston,
J.D./Galaxy, and Laurie/Andrew as the weakest. Laura and Preston are out, unsurprisingly. I'm bummed, but only a little. She
clearly has a great relationship with Preston, but definitely got less cool as the show continued.
For the record, the unsurprising verdict: The show is waaay more enjoyable after a few drinks and little sleep. But, it
also does make me want a puppy of my very own.
Is Beth Joy growing on you at all? Do you think the challenges really showcase the owners' training abilities and
dogs' talents?
Comments
I dislike Beth Joy more each week, although her little dog is pretty cute.
I was surprised Travis defended Beth Joy, until my husband said he probably is one of those guys who can't stand it when
women cry, so he just takes the side of whoever is the most visibly upset. Dibbs | Aug 14, 2008 5:50:52 AM | #
I totally thought Laura should have been booted off from the show. Even though everyone knew she would be booted off on
episode six since words had spread the minute she got kicked off the show and was in isolation with the rest. Tabloids report
things people!!! They have sources. But seeing as Laura is there only for the fame it's a good thing she is gone. She can't
handle any confrontation and looks like a complete wuss idiot when being confronted. She likes to talk, talk talk about other
peole but the minute you go to her to defend herself she rolls her eyes and looks scared and intimidated cause she can't take
the heat. Good riddance to bad garbage...GOOD job judges!!!!! Jackie | Aug 14, 2008 5:53:32 AM | #
I like the show, but saying a painting by a dog "sucks" is like critiquing the first painting by a blind 3-year old. A
little harsh.
And no, Beth Joy has not grown on me. If I were her dog, I'd slap my paw across her face (quit dressing me up!) Cynic

I can't wait for the challenges to finally become 'real' dog-oriented events. Painting? Expessing emotions for the photographer?
Who on erth comes up with those ideas? I hate the challengs completely - they are completely idiotic most of the time, and
the only thing that gets me through the show is concenrating on watching the dogs and their relationships with their owners.
All the dogs are adorable (yes, I'm a dog momma myself, and never yet met a dog I didn't like), and some are so much more
funthen their humans. If I were to focus on the challenges, I'd turn the TV off after 5 minutes. I think Travis was a moron
for sticking his nose into the debate between Laura and Beth Joy. Granted Laura was a total bitch in how she behaved, but
lets not forget that Beth Joy made Bella Star cry several times (that we saw), and then lied about it to the judges saying
'she HELPED her dog work through her issues". What a hypocrite. They both deserved to get kicked of. And it was very small
of Theresa to not admit to the judges that this time Bill gave her the advantage (he had no qualms saying that and almost
giving her credit fo their good performane last week). Shows you she is not even close to the class of person Bill is. And
I totlly love his relationship with Star. I hope they are the final winner. Renata | Aug 14, 2008 7:45:22 AM | #
I'm totally with Renata vis a vis the so-called "challenges". When CBS was promoting this show, they showed the actual
physical events in which the dogs would compete, which is about as far from the actual nature of the show as you can get.
Dancing with Doggies? Oh please! 'Painting' as an aspect of canine intelligence? Get real! The find the meat competition
last night was over in 15 minutes, leaving 45 minutes for the fluff piece. I was hoping for more and better before I watched
an episode. This is just another so-called reality show based on the Survivor model that got old a long time ago. Daniel
| Aug 14, 2008 7:58:47 AM | #
I do think it would take a pretty smart dog to be able to learn what it takes to execute a painting, so i don't think it's
a bad marker of dog intelligence, personally. I liked both challenges last night, much more than last week.
Overall, I just wish they'd stop trying to force feed us the formulaic reality plot and give us more dog stuff. It would
have been really interesting to watch more of how they got their dogs to paint and how they came up with their 'concepts'.
Also, Teresa's leg up trainer (Kirstin ?) who helped her with Leroy's painting was seriously hot and I don't understand why
there wasn't a little more of THAT in the show last night.
I agree that Travis & Presley's painting was pretty amazing and I was really surprised. I definitely loved the cat
drama between Beth Joy & Laura. Hilarious and seemed real enough, too. I dunno what they're gonna do next week, but if
the challenges keep getting better, I'll probly watch but I am definitely getting sick of 18 minutes of dog stuff and 27 minutes
of typical human reality show plot. Not the BEST call on CBS part. Brian | Aug 14, 2008 10:31:04 AM | #
So ridiculous that Laura is posting non-stop videos of her and travis on youtube. Gee, I wonder what she is trying to prove?
All the publicity in the world will not work, she was kicked off of a bad not to be renewed channel 2 reality show. A taped
reality show at that!!! karen | Aug 14, 2008 8:41:30 PM | #
Yes, it is pretty pathetic to see the shameless promotion Laura does all over the internet. Everyone knows both her and
Travis were late add ins to the show to fill the "hot girl" "hot guy" roles. Brianna | Aug 15, 2008 6:52:04 AM | #
Well, I for one was totally blown away but appreciate Travis sticking up for Beth Joy (even though I can't stand her).
He seems like a class guy in my opinion. Bella Starlet's paws are sensitive, but it did not appear to me that she was being
hurt, even though she sounded like it. The dogs are rightfully the stars in this show and it's fun to watch them, but as others
have said, I think that the physicality is missing. I wanted to see dog tricks, not dancing and painting. It's more like how
creative can you be with your dog rather than how well trained the dog is. Oh well, it's an hour of entertainment and with
the lame TV that's on now that So You Think You Can Dance is off the air, it fills the void. Too bad they couldn't have been
more true to their promos.
I would like to see either Travis or Bill win it all. Cynx | Aug 15, 2008 8:36:37 AM | #
Oh, and it always seemed to me that Laura's "love" of Travis' dog was really fake. I'm sure she liked the dog, but she
went overboard with it to try to impress Travis. Too bad - I started off liking her. Cynx | Aug 15, 2008 8:38:03 AM | #

'Greatest American Dog': [Insert dog pun involving famous artist here] By Liz Pardue August 13, 07:39
PM I'm gonna be straight with you guys right now: I'm coming from a happy "hour" that lasted more than three hours, and I'm
a wee bit buzzed. Plus, I'm totally sleep-deprived from staying up late to watch gymnastics. My theory is that it'll make
Greatest American Dog 100% more enjoyable. Either that, or I'll start sobbing halfway through about how adorable the dogs
are, and how much I wish I had a puppy. Could go either way. We rejoin the trainers as they discuss Brandy's ouster. Travis's
reaction to her absence: "Who am I gonna make cry every day, and then cheer up every day?" Oh, Travis. I love you mostly for
your awesome dog and your good looks, but the sense of humor definitely doesn't hurt. If it doesn't work out between you and
Laura, call me! Sadly for my prospects with Travis, those two are totally in love. It's cute. Dog Bone Challenge: "Doggy IQ,"
in which dogs have to figure out how to get to treats on the other side of a wall. Bella Starlet rocks it hardcore, and Beth
Joy admits that Bella Starlet took an IQ test once that implied Bella was smarter than she was. You took the words right out
of my mouth, sweetie. Galaxy is also very speedy, but Andrew fails completely. Laurie says he just isn't food motivated, but
he also didn't respond to her "go get it" command, so it seems like she's making excuses a little. Star, though, is twice
as fast as anyone else. Bill, very fairly, chooses to give the Dog Bone Suite to Teresa, who gave it up to him last week.
Aww. Best in Show Challenge: "Salvador Doggy," in which dogs must create a painting that represents the bond between owner
and dog. They'll be judged on creativity of concept and use of tools. Huh. At first I wasn't sure it had too much to do with
training ability, but there's actually a lot of creativity and skill involved in getting your dog to paint a set design, it
turns out! Teresa has the use of a dog art instructor, who helps her out a lot with the use of stencils. The judges like the
technique and definition in the painting, and we don't see Teresa mention that Bill allowed her to use an instructor. Bill
is really worried about the challenge, and chooses to keep it simple. The final painting isn't too cohesive, but is very meaningful
(if grade school-style). The judges thought it was predictable, and weren't sure he used enough techniques. Travis also uses
stencils, and the final painting is really nice. Lots of good, solid color, and a great, meaningful theme. The judges like
it, but again aren't feeling the technique variety. Geez, how many ways are there to get a dog to paint? Beth Joy makes a
crazy outfit for Bella Starlet (surprise!) with sponge shapes on it to paint with, and improbably enough, it totally works.
The nickname "Pawcasso," however, does not, nor does her technique of putting paint on Bella's paws. Bella gets upset and
yelps a bit, though the final result is okay. The judges really like it, but the other contestants feel like she didn't "work
through" Bella's paw issues so much as force Bella through. Laura comes up with an over-ambitious concept, and has some serious
trouble carrying it out. In fact, it's pretty much a mess. The judges think it "sucks," and Laura immediately throws Beth
Joy under the bus for making Bella Starlet cry. On the one hand, fair enough, that seemed awful. On the other hand, your painting
was terrible because you couldn't figure out how to get Preston to paint, Laura, and plenty of owners managed that without
upsetting their dogs. The judges agree, and think she could have done better. Beth Joy throws down when they get backstage,
but no one claws anyone's eyes out. Laurie, on the other hand, seems to do a great job getting Andrew to paint. The painting,
though, is more like a diagram. A very well-made diagram, but a diagram nonetheless. The judges agree that it's more of a
poster than a painting. J.D. has a bit of trouble with his initial technique concept, but the final painting is so chaotic
that it almost works for me. The judges, however, disagree. They dislike that the words he used turned out completely scrambled,
despite the positive spin he tries to put on it. Teresa and Leroy win the challenge for a painting that reflected their relationship
and used great symbolism. The judges give Beth Joy a chance to defend herself, and she tearfully says that she'd never do
anything to hurt Bella Starlet. Travis, of all people, backs her up. Yes! Travis and Laura are SO over. I totally have a shot
now! The judges name Laura/Preston, J.D./Galaxy, and Laurie/Andrew as the weakest. Laura and Preston are out, unsurprisingly.
I'm bummed, but only a little. She clearly has a great relationship with Preston, but definitely got less cool as the show
continued. For the record, the unsurprising verdict: The show is waaay more enjoyable after a few drinks and little sleep.
But, it also does make me want a puppy of my very own. Is Beth Joy growing on you at all? Do you think the challenges really
showcase the owners' training abilities and dogs' talents?
Cinthia KNEW before tonight how smart Bella Starlet! Now we all know. You were amazing! The WHOLE show was
about Bella! I am so proud of you girl! I LOVED IT! What an Artist she is! a real PAWCASSO! The audience NOW is going to be
in LOVE with Bella, the silent sleeper.

ABOVE STORY ABOUT RENEE SHUMWAY OUR FRIEND
Hello & it is so nice to meet both of you.:) Hi Beth. I am hoping it is OK that I am e-mailing you.
My husband, myself and Kaos, (our 3 1/2 year Yorkie), have watched The Greatest American Dog sine the first show. I have been
a fan of both Bella's and yours. Bella is so beautiful and cute. She looks like my Kaos and she reminds me of her also. Kaos
is very intelligent, (like Bella), and Kaos is also very attached to me. I bought Kaos when she was 12 weeks old and she loves
her daddy also, but she has always been very clingy to me. Part of this is my fault. I am disabled with Lupus and unable to
work. My sister who lives upstairs has a 12 year old Yorkie named Nanook is with us daily while my sister works. I do not
leave Kaos for long with anyone. The few times she was left with my sister, she cried and yelped. She sat behind the door
and waited for us to come home. We were back within 2 hours. I need to socialize her much more. Until this past January, I
also had a 12 year old Yorkie named Woofie. She was very close to him, (as was I). Unfortunately, we lost him to kidney disease
and he died in my arms on the way to the vets. I cried all the way there, and once the vet took him and said he had to put
him down, I could not stop crying. Kaos was not herself for about 3 weeks. She is large for a pure Yorkie weighing 12 pounds.
But the vet says it is not fat, and she is solid so we do not need a special diet. She is already on Purina pro plan dry and
nightly she gets a 1/2 can of Cesar dog food or a 1/4 container of Beneful moist food. I am not meaning to sound like a doting
Mother, but Kaos is smart and can do quite a few tricks; sit, lay down, play dead, roll over, high five, shake and if I put
meat or treat down and say do not touch, she will wait for me to tell her to go get it. She also is very pretty and cute with
her markings. The only thing is her ears are not straight up all the way. Right now I have her in 2 on line dog contests.
I really would like to know how I can get her more exposure. Can you offer any suggestions? We also love Cape Cod as your
bio on Dogster says you do, but since my Lupus flared up 4 years ago, I cannot be in the sun. I have chemo once a week. You
seem like a genuinely caring person. I like real people and not people hat pretend to be nice to others. She also loves to
get dressed up everyday and night. She goes to the crate with her clothes and barks & waits for me to help her pick out
her dress, tee shirt, tank top, sweat shirt or sweater. At night she waits for her PJ's or night gown and she also oves to
have me style her hair. I finally got her to wear a French Braid. That is another reason I think she is like Bella. If you
have time sometime, I would love to hear back from you and maybe a few pictures of you both. I will understand if you do not
have time, or if you do not want to write or if you are to busy. Also, please let me know if I was out of line writing to
you and if you prefer I not write to you. Kaos photo is on the bottom with my signature and I have enclosed a few others.
I look forward to hearing back from you. I also think that your picture that Bella painted was the best one and I hope she
goes all the way on the show. I really look forward to hearing from you. BEST OF LUCK TO BOTH OF YOU IN THE SHOW !!! Beth,
thank you so much for responding and for the thoughts & ideas. Can I please ask you one more question? How do I go about
finding an agent? WOuld I look in Google? I am new at this. If I did not tell you this earlier, I want you to know that from
the first show, both of you were my favorites. I am sorry for writing again, but I wanted to ask you about the agent. I know
you also said you love hearing from your fans. SO would you mind if we wrote you once in a while, possibly weekly? I know
you are busy, but I admire you and the way that you care about Bella. I do hope I have not over done it with e-mailing you
too much Good Luck on the show! Thanks & Have a Nice Day! Cassie Thank you in advance, Cassie Russell "Hey good going

THERE ARE ALSO TONS OF GREAT COMMENTS ON OUR MYSPACE PAGES AND FACEBOOK PAGE!!
Hello Beth & Bella, We wanted to let you know our opinion of the show last night.
I know I sent you an e-card, but I wanted to add a few more things to say and I felt more comfortable saying them in an e-mail
then on your card. I really thought you should not have been asked to leave last night. My husband, (he watches
the show weekly with me), also felt the same. Even though Bella did not get out of the maze, she also did not tire as
did other dogs and you also use a very positive way of training her. I have often felt that one male there uses a negative
training method. It is not your friend neither. I also felt that Bella exceeded all the dogs many weeks in the
painting pictures and drawing and also she has always appeared to be very well trained. I can be honest and tell you
that due to her looking like my Kaos and reminding her of Kaos, has inspired me to really work positively on training Kaos.
Please know & understand that I am not meaning to sound gossipy, but I am just telling you how I feel. I really
hope that we can keep in touch via e-mail and that if Bella is going to be on any other shows on TV or commercials or even
any contests that you will please let us know. I also admire your strength and willingness by adopting a rescue
dog. I also hope that you have been able to take the rest of your Summer and enjoy and relax
with your Bella and your Husband. :) -- Take Care, Kaos & Cassie
Bella & Beth,
Both Kaos & myself wanted to let you know that we saw the show
last night and we felt you should still be in there. We thought Bella did great! We also felt that you handled
your final walk with dignity and grace.
We would still love to stay e-mail pals, (if that is OK)?
Bella still will always be the cutest and best looking dog that was
on the show! I hope that you, Beth are feeling OK.
Please let us know if Bella is in any other shows or competitions or
anything on TV.

http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/livingandhealth/ci_10271702 On "The Greatest American Dog," rescue mutt Bella Starlet begins acting aggressive, nipping at some of the contestants
at Canine Academy. She blows The Big Dig challenge - which Bill & Star and Travis & Presley win, earning the Dog Bone
Suite and phone calls from home. Teresa & Leroy win the Puppy Maze challenge, but it's no shocker the Australian Shepherd
is good at herding puppies. Beth Joy & Bella Starlet are eliminated when the judges see she's stressed out and fails to
corral the pups. Of course it's a teary goodbye for Beth Joy, who says of her soulmate, Bella Starlet, "I never knew what
love was until she came into my life." She's a little crazy, but still sweet. "Greatest American Dog" airs Wednesday at
8 p.m. on CBS.
http://www.myfriendlypets.com/
Bella Starlet has had a meltdown and is growling and snipping at the dogs and owners alike. She growled and nipped at Travis,
and he is the cutest guy there!! Beth Joy is in tears watching her dog exhibit this behavior. She says the dog just stressed
by the competition.
Surprisingly, Bill was very tough on Star and the dog responded accordingly be behaving poorly. The judges started fighting
over J.D. and Galaxy and it got worse from there. In the end, Bella Starlet and Beth Joy were asked to leave and it was a
sad event for all. Stay tuned as the drama continues.
The Best in Show challenge involved the owners and dogs painting a picture that describes their relationship. This seemed
a bit odd to me and really didn’t show much training between owners and dogs. In fact, I think it was one of the worst
challenges on the show thus far. But there was some “cattiness” (pardon the expression) going on. Laura ratted
out Beth Joy to the judges and said that she was hurting Bella Starlet in trying to get the dog to paint. However, Bella Starlet
just has a thing with getting her feet touched and that’s what caused her to yelp. Travis, who had the hots for Laura,
defended Beth Joy and you saw the daggers come from Laura’s eyes. In the end, it didn’t matter because Laura and
Preston lost and had to take their final lap. I was fond of Laura and Preston until I saw that she could really get bitchy!!!
Stay tuned for more challenges and more doggie drama!!!

Yep, I am still watching America's Greatest Dog. I missed posting last week, but I have seen the episodes from then and from this week as well. (I caught them online as
I've been caught up in watching the Olympics!)
Last week we saw Laura and Preston go home. I'm not sure what was up with Laura on the episode.
She had some real issues with the art-making process. I'm sure there was more going on than was shown. Preston didn't do really
well with what she asked him to do, and she was pressed for time. Her art wasn't good at all.
I also really thought it was bad form of her to call out Beth Joy on making Bella yelp. I
think that Beth Joy was being honest (my opinion) when she said that Bella has feet issues. Travis defended Beth Joy, and
rightfully so. She wouldn't do anything to hurt her dog. If anything, she is too over-protective!
This week, the dogs were asked to "rescue" their owners. Two of the three teams did really well. Bella Starlet was put in the wrong role, if you ask me. Beth Joy and
Theresa were teamed up. They had Leroy ring the bell, and Bella try to dig to let Beth Joy out of the box. Bella just stood
and barked, which is exactly what I thought she might do.
The dogs also had to run a maze to get to their owners. The catch was that they had to get
three golden retriever puppies to come with them through the maze. Leroy was amazing on this one! The pups just absolutely
followed him and Theresa did so well in calling him. Star was having no part of this. She didn't want anything to do with
the puppies. Bill was chastised by the judges for pushing her too hard. I appreciate his response to them, even when criticized.
He takes it and moves on, but doesn't get up in their faces like some of the other humans!
In the end, it was Beth Joy and Bella Starlet who left this week. I think it was time for
them. Beth Joy was showing the signs of stress, and it was obviously effecting Bella as well. She was snappy, and nipping
at people this week. I hope they have gotten some relaxation post-show!
Who are you rooting for as this comes closer to an end? I'm still on team Bill and Star. I
also really like the relationship with Travis and Presley!

As much as I want to rename this the Greatest American Show Ever on CBS, I'll let it stick with its original title for
now . . . but OMG, it's getting even better! Last night's episode had ups (fancy schmancy dinner) and downs (Star's ER visit),
but all in all I was pleased with the results.
In the end, the biggest dog was eliminated – Kenji the Giant Schnauzer and owner Elan. As annoying as I find Beth
Joy and Bella Starlet, the judges pointed out Elan's abrasive-training techniques. With a harsh voice, constant snapping in
the pup's face, and distracting whistles, she was seriously stressing her pooch out . . . and the other dogs, too. With Michael
(the comedian) gone from last week, there were fewer snappy remarks but I've pulled some of my favorite things I overhead. Pick the funniest (and let me know
if I missed anything funnier in your comments below)!

14 at 5:59pm Hi Beth, Am down here in LA on business but had to send you a quick note on the show last night. Bella
was the BEST...the smartest. I could not believe that BITCH that made that comment about you. What a sack of you know what
and I am so glad she got the foot. Her dog was cute but she.....I am so glad you gave her a little New York, because I certainly
was giving her A LOT of NY from home. Kisses to my precious Bella.. She has the cutest face. What a find she was for you.

very interesting blog above...too much on it to post here...just read.
some good quotes:
Beth Joy of course has an outfit ready for Bella Starlet for the occasion. She puts paint on stencils on a jacket and
then puts it on Bella and has her roll over on the paper. Aw that's cute! Beth Joy renames her dog "Pawcasso"! But then she
tries to get Bella Starlet to walk in a circle around the paper with paint on her front paws. Apparently Bella has some issue
with those paws because she was abused before Beth Joy got her or something like that. Bella clearly doesn't like her paws
being touched, and squeals a couple times while they are being painted. But in the end she walks around the paper creating
a circular rainbow of paws, and it does look cool.
First up are Beth Joy and Bella Starlet. As I said before, they have a B and a star in the upper corner (those were
the stencils that were on her jacket when she rolled over onto the paper) along with a giant rainbow color circle of pawprints.
It came out looking great, almost like a painting a young child would do in art class. But I'm not sure if the difficulty
level was that high. She gives this long explanation about how their lives were like rain before they met and now they are
a pretty happy rainbow together. Wendy asks how they did the painting, and Beth Joy admits that Bella has a paw problem and
they worked through it together. But if I were the judges I would wonder why she used Bella's paws if she has a problem with
them. Victoria though says how it was great that they got over those issues together and she feels inspired by the painting.
I agree about the inspiring nature of the painting, but not so much about how Beth Joy should have used Bella's paws for so
much of it.
Laura walks back in and of course is called out by Beth Joy. She accuses Laura of lying to the judges and says that
she shouldn't use her situation as an excuse for her poor work. I agree with Beth Joy in this situation. Unlike a few weeks
ago when Laurie revealed why Elvis was on leash during a team challenge, Laura had no reason to reveal this about Beth Joy
other than to cause trouble.
Victoria then asks Beth Joy about whether she pushed Bella Starlet too hard. Beth Joy says that this upsets her and
cries about how she's proud her dog did the task at all. A bit overdramatic, if you ask me.
Oooh and now Travis comes
in and defends Beth Joy. He says that Beth Joy always worries about Bella's paws, and would never do anything to intentionally
hurt her dog. At first I thought she was wrong to force her dog to paint through pain, but the more I think about the more
it seems like she was just trying to help her dog. Beth Joy may be a bit odd but I can tell she would never hurt her dog on
purpose.
And now, finally, the bottom three: Laura and Preston, JD and Galaxy, and Laurie and Andrew. Once again a pretty predictable
bottom group. I think Laura and Preston are in serious trouble, and I thought that before she called out Beth Joy.
And the pair going home is... Laura and Preston. Again not surprising. They were bad two weeks in a row and calling
out Beth Joy may have been the last straw. And it appears she lost out on Travis too, as Travis didn't take her side in the
debate against Beth Joy.
Next and Beth Joy and Bella Starlet with a Broadway routine. This too is cute, as it has a bit of a "Singing in the
Rain" theme. Beth Joy has an umbrella and has Bellastarlet jump up under it and then twirl around after her. She too gives
a high five to her owner. But they run into problems when Beth Joy can't get her dog to jump over the umbrella handle. Eventually
she gives up and just lets Bellastarlet go under it. The judges don't look too impressed though. Wendy thinks Beth Joy was
excited, but Bellastarlet wasn't, and I think I agree. Victoria said it wasn't that challenging of a routine. I think the
high-five thing was hard but I don't have a dog so maybe it's not.
The next morning we Ron watches as Beth Joy feeds Bella Starlet a bunch of odd pills and potions. First of all she's
feeding the dog at the table, which even I know is a big no-no. It's unclear what the weird food is for, although I'm guessing
it's to keep her looking extra pretty or something like that. Meanwhile Tillman eats "normal" dog food while Bella Starlet
longingly looks on. If Bella Starlet really wants normal dog food Beth Joy should be smart enough to just give it to her (unless
of course she's allergic to regular dog food or something like that). I really do wonder what is in the food that Beth Joy
feeds her dog though...As for the food, I think some of it was vitamins and supplements.
The host (sorry don't know his name) then comes to talk to the contestants to tell them their next challenge. As we
saw in the previews, it is a photo shoot, to the delight of Brandy and Beth Joy. Wouldn't it be ironic if Beth Joy and Bella
Starlet got sent home in the one challenge they are supposed to be good at? Each contestant will pick a word out of a bowl,
and the photos must convey that word. That's good that means it's not just who takes the prettiest picture (sorry Beth Joy)
but rather who best gets their dog to show emotion.
JD picks sneaky. That fits him pretty well, though I don't know
about his dog. Bill picks stubborn, which might be hard to convey in a sweet dog like Star. Beth Joy (with help from Bella
Starlet) picks mischievous. They both seem like the mischievous type so that shouldn't be too bad
Beth Joy has a good idea for her shoot. She has Bella Starlet lie next to a bowl of spilled treats. They even get a
shot of her stealing one of the treats. They do a good job.
And lastly we have Beth Joy and Bella Starlet. I honestly don't like the photo they chose either- I think they had
better ones to choose from as well. Bella Starlet is licking her lips next to the knocked over cookie jar, and that detracts
from the rest of the photo. Alan, though, thinks it is "perfect", as she looks mischievous and smug. I don't love it as much
as Bill and Star's, but I agree it is better than some of the other ones.

http://www.pethobbyist.com/sitenews/index.php?/archives/253-Recap-Greatest-American-Dog,-Episode-107.html
Everyone at the Canine Academy seemed stressed out this week. The competition is getting stiffer. The teams have been away
from their families for seven weeks and the tension this causes in the dogs and people makes everyone even more stressed than
they were before they started feeling tense because the competition is getting stiffer and being away from their families
is rough and...
Bella-Starlet was showing it more than any others. (Beth-Joy has been showing her frazzled nerves and minimal
coping skills since day one.) Bella has taken to being more aggressive than usual, nipping at Travis’s hand when he
reaches out to touch her, growling at other dogs when they initiate interaction and generally acting like her mom, overwrought
and emotional.
Beth-Joy’s response to Bella-Starlet’s emotional sensitivity? She cried and whined to her dog.
I’m all for leaning on your dog for the unconditional emotional fulfillment that they can provide. I will even say with
no shame that talking to your dog as if they understand the complicated concepts of escrow, cost benefit analysis, Chinese
vs. pizza and other life-altering decisions is a healthy way to work through some tough questions. However, when you need
to discuss what to do about your dog’s emotional instability, it is probably best that you remain emotionally stable.
Dogs don’t understand long-term high-yield low-risk investment strategies. They completely understand stressed and worried.
This week’s dog bone suite challenge came with the deluxe room, the “leg up” in the elimination
competition and a phone call home. I have never rooted for Star and Bill so hard before.
The task itself was easy enough. An owner gets in a box. The other owner works with the two dogs, getting
one to ring the bell and the other to go up some stairs and dig for a rope that opens the door and releases the second human
member of the team.
With standard reality TV brand irony, Lori and Andrew were teamed up with JD and Galaxy. The two humans had
a heated discussion in the previous scene about their differing views on dog training. JD uses a dominant/submissive method
that doesn’t involve treats or praise. As a result, JD has won a lot of contests and earned his dog the nickname “the
robot dog.” She is inarguably well trained and listens not just to JD but to anyone giving appropriate commands.
Lori has espoused her views on being the leader, the alpha, the structure and the one thing in Andrew’s
life. “It’s not extra stuff that he wants. I am the one who gives him what he needs to survive.”
I want to take this moment to say that if am not coming down one way or the other regarding the best method
of dog training. For starters: my dog might dig to get me out of a box, but only because he likes digging. He loves me, but
I’ve never trained him to dig; he came that way. For another Victoria Stilwell and Wendy Diamond, both well-known
names in dog training and rescue, almost came to blows and did come to tears when debating the merits of JD’s method
of working with Galaxy. Ms. Stillwell called it “medieval dog training,” to which Wendy Diamond replied, “I
completely disagree.” This degenerated into an “I’m right," “No, I’m right," back and forth
until Wendy asked, “Do you know everything? Are you the god of dog training?” Victoria’s response?
“Yes, I am.”
Um... yeah, did I mention everyone was a little stressed?
As it happened, Bella-Starlet and Leroy had the worst time in the dog bone challenge because Bella, in true drama queen fashion,
likes to be the one who gets rescued. She’s not much for doing the rescuing. Leroy did what he was supposed to,
but with such a weak partner, he didn’t stand a chance.
Lori stated that because she didn’t like the mean way JD treated his dog, she wouldn’t let him
handle Andrew, which meant that she put JD in the box. They did a respectable job and would have won, but one team wanted
it more.
Bill and Travis decided roles this way: “Bill’s always right so when he said Star should ring
the bell and I should get it the box, I figured we’d do that.” Travis had a winning strategy, and he and Bill
won the leg up, the suite and most importantly, the call home.
Bill calls his wife “old woman.” How cute is that? His wife wanted to know about Star. He wanted
to know about her blood sugar. Apparently both are holding steady. The leg up was the best part for me, (next to the almost
cat-fights): PUPPIES!
Travis and Presley and Bill and Star were introduced to three golden retriever puppies per team. They had
two hours to acclimate themselves and their companions to the puppies so that in the maze competition the next day, the dogs
would know what to do, or at least, not eat the puppies. Travis summed it up with, “This would be more of a leg up if
I knew how to acclimate them, or had a dog trainer.”
Star wasn’t as verbal, but she was pretty clear that while she had nothing against puppies in general,
or these specifically, she also saw no reason at all to interact with little frolicking tussling things that didn’t
know how to follow a simple command.
Presley seemed to have the opposite attitude. I’m not sure Presley knows he’s not a puppy himself.
I’m not sure he’s not a puppy himself. He’s really just barely out of the stage, and still loves
to play and jump and run and... Do I really need to tell you what puppies do?
When the competition started, the maze didn’t seem daunting and the puppy aspect added a cuteness factor.
Remember when I mentioned the competition was getting stiffer? Only two dogs actually managed to lead all three puppies out
of the maze within five minutes.
Star could have done it, except she’s just not as young as she used to be. Bill pushed her, and caught
flack for it. He asked her to get up and keep going after she’d rolled onto her side and licked her lips, telling him
clearly “Dad, I need a nap.” With $250,000 at stake, and no actual danger to the dog, they continued. Star never
did find that third puppy.
Presley had so much fun running the maze he completely forgot about the puppies. When Travis took him back
to the beginning... same song, second verse. Travis is a lovely man dedicated to his mother and his first dog, Presley, but
he and his dog have something in common. Adorable exuberant puppiness in spades. Focus on the tasks at hand... they’re
both working on it.
Bella-Starlet failed miserably. She was tired and cranky, she wanted the puppies to leave her alone and she
wanted her mommy. She couldn’t get any of those things until her five minutes of unhappiness were over, at which point
she clung to Beth-Joy in a way I completely recognize from having overly-devoted dogs and working with 2-year-olds.
If Bella-Starlet just wanted mommy. Mommy just wanted Bella-Starlet, and was trying to get her through the
maze with increasingly nonsensical bribes. “Let’s go for a car ride, c’mon.” “Where’s
daddy, come see daddy.” Huh?
The Judges declared Theresa and Leroy the winners. I always say, “It’s the deed, not the breed,"
but um, a Maltese vs. a rescue dog vs. a Border Collie, in a herding competition? Please.
Star was a good girl, but she just didn’t care that much about the puppies. So in the end, Bella-Starlet,
Presley and Star were in the bottom three. This was Star’s first time in the bottom three, and Bill was even classy
when listening to the previously bickering trainers give him advice on how to handle his perfectly trained, strongly bonded,
beautiful “kiddo.” In the end, Bella-Starlet and Beth-Joy went home. They’ve been together for ten years.
Beth-Joy clearly loves her dog, but her dog is a diva, and divas are generally not going to win in training competitions.

Note from Frankie: Love the show, hate the judges. . .

I felt bad for Bella as you could see she was really starting to get stressed out. She has irritated me in past episodes, but I certainly felt for Beth Joy and Bella. You never want to see them suffer.
i am getting tons of fan mail for mme. bella starlet from parents across the country saying their little girls are devastated that she got booted last night...it is sweet, and a pack of little girls saw us walking in midtown yesterday, and it was like the beatles had arrived...they went nuts for her, and bella loves it!! Dear Beth:
First and foremost, the pictures below are the most ridiculously cute pictures I have ever seen! If you do not win the show, then there is truly no justice in the world!
Best,

Sorry to hear about the show, but remember, Chris Daughtry is the second most successful american idol in the real world and he came in 4th. I foresee tv commercials, maybe for the new Rachael Ray dog food-- Nutrish.

AWH - that picture is classic! Unlike you I think I'm an ugly crier. I wasn't able to watch it last night but of course I will, even though I know the ending now. Winning is for losers anyway.

We are so sorry to see you guys off the show! I didn't expect it at all...
(My 6 year old daughter cried for quite a while afterwards...)

I did not think you should have been eliminated That was really a difficult challenge and the fact that the dogs were all different sizes made it seem unfair as the little dogs were about the same size or smaller then the puppies which made it more intimidating for them but you made it very far in the competition. I hope Bella wasn;t too stressed out after the experience. How was the time following the elimination? Diane
Hi Beth Joy & Bella:

Hi Beth Joy,
I'm so sorry you and Bella Starlett left the show tonight. Well, I can tell that you have a unique bond with her, very admirable and a great model for other pet owners and animal lovers.
I see you got the information about our event tomorrow to promote the Rational Animal / ASPCA Gimme Shelter concert. Hope you can still come! I tried to get Diane West to come, but I think she's snowed under right now. But you never know!
Thanks, and I hope to meet you soon.

"everyone loves bella starlet. i should have you know that bella starlet is my mom's favorite dog she's always talking about how cute she is i'm sure bella will get some good stuff. she's got the face of a star.
i remember when we met her we were all like oh my god, that dog is like a little person
she just has such an intelligent gaze" Suzanne
Bella Starlet's more-than-respectable 15.47 seconds. The dog bone suite competition was called Doggie IQ, and was supposed to test the dogs' focus and control. A three-walled structure around a pile of bacon and grilled chicken had a small slit cut into it, so that the dogs could smell the food.
Sadly for those who might have been rooting for a Laura/Travis romance, she and Preston got sent home because, according to the judges, she didn't really try. I, however, think it was because she called Beth-Joy out for her rough treatment of Bella Starlet. The accusation was actually unfounded; Bella's yelps were due to her issues resulting from a previous person's mistreatment of her, and nothing Beth-Joy did to her was in any way cruel, painful, or abusive. And when asked about it by the judges, Beth-Joy denied that she had – or ever would – harm her little rescue dog in any way.
