These are are comments leading up to EPISODE 7 (our expulsion from the academy) and after...
My daughter and I miss Bella on the show!!! She is a little sweetie!!! Jackie
Bella Starlet GAD Hi, I watched greatest american dog. Bella was really good. Good luck with her acting career. Ryan
"U r too cute Bella Starlet !!!" Traviesa
I recapped last Wednesday's episode of Greatest American Dog with some answers from my chat with Beth Joy, but here's the rest of the interview – you don't think I'd get off the phone without asking about her pooch's name,
do you? Don't forget to tune in tonight at 8 p.m. to see which duo's going home this week!
PetSugar: How did you decide on her name? Beth Joy: When I rescued her, her name was
Maggie and I was like "eh, you're too beautiful – you're bella" so I named her that. She does movies so she has her
middle name Starlet, all my dogs and cats have middle names it's not just Bella. Her nicknames are Cuddle Muffin, Puppy Monkey,
Baby Girl, Smoopy, it's a wide range however I'm feeling.
PetSugar: What's it like seeing her on TV? Beth Joy: She looks gorgeous! It's funny
to see her and let all of America and the world see who she is. It's just an honor. I love watching her and every time it's
on, she sits in her California bed that we got from the show and watches herself.
PetSugar: Is there anything you wished you'd see more of? Beth Joy: This show should
have been so much more about all the dogs having fun than all the drama. There are some funny things that happened in the
pool and wild stuff around the house that they didn't show and it was sad because that was really what we all (as the cast
members) thought that they would have shown because it's about dogs.
PetSugar: What was your experience being on the show? Beth Joy: We learned amazing
things on the show, dogs can learn tricks at any age, I want everybody to know that. I'm happy to be the one representing
rescue dogs with Bella Starlet on the show, she's a pure mutt and she's quite an amazing dog as you can see on her website – we have fun.
Learn what's up next for Bella Starlet Dog when you read more.
PetSugar: Does she get recognized now in NYC? Beth Joy: Totally! She got recognized
yesterday, this little girl came up and asked if she could pet the dog and she was like "Mommy, it's Bella Starlet!" and her
mom and all these other kids come running – it was so cute. Bella just wags her tail and greets them and it's so adorable.
She knows who she is, she prances when she walks, she really is Bella Starlet Dog. It's her trademark.
PetSugar: How does Bella get along with your other pets? Beth Joy: She's the diva,
the actress dog of the group, she plays with them once in a while. She doesn't really think she's a dog. She does her own
thing, like me, we go to the beat of our own drummer.
PetSugar: What's up next for you both? Beth Joy: We have some surprises in the works
but I don't really want to talk about it because I don't want anyone taking my ideas. Bella's always surprising and doing
fun stuff. We have her Halloween float coming up for the Village parade and the theme is "Totally Pawsome '80s" and we're
going to dress really funny '80s style and it will be cool.
"I just wanna be friends with you because you look very nice and i think that we would become great friends!" Penny
"hi can we be friends....Woof....Be Safe....Abbie"
Hi Beth Joy and Bella
Aug 28, 2008 8:54 AM
Good Morning Beth Joy and Bella, I want you to know i miss you guys so much, watching the show last night made
me sad without you 2. My husband agreed with me that you 2 are missed by ALL!
I'm going to tell you what my husband
and i said When you left the show, my husband and i both agreed that YOU AND BELLA SHOULD OF STAYED... The woman
with that Maltese SHOULD OF LEFT! I could say more, but i won't. We also were really happy for you that the guy with
the Boxer takes up for you as my husband and i do. The guy with the Boxer seems to be a DEVOTED FRIEND TOWARD YOU,
WE LIKED THAT ABOUT HIM!!!
We were sad that Star and Bill were out last night. He seems like a sweet man and sweet
baby girl dog. We liked them!
Oh, i want to introduce to you my new baby girl ShihTzu (my profile pic and i
have a small album, in view my pics, but will be adding more pics)I I just adopted Sunday night. I live in Cleveland,Tennessee
but i drove all the way to Alabama to adopt her. I named her Daisie, she' so sweet, i just love her. I miss my other
ShihTzu i had. Like i say, ShihTzu's are heart-stealers, once you have a ShihTzu and you lose'm, you want another one.
Anyway,
I hope you and Bella are doing good. Hug and kiss Bella for me, you 2 are such huge sweethearts! Love, Donna:)

Had to get in here on this one....People..pups..all...Beth Joy was NOT hurting her dog! Bella Starlet would cry out like
that if you just barely touched her paws. You say you understand working with issues of rescues, but you don't understand
this? If you had paid better attention to what was actually happening between Bella Starlet and Beth Joy, you would have seen
that she was very gentle with Bella, she wasn't hurting her. and once she let go of her paws, she was totally fine...having
the sponges taped on her paws didn't bother her at all. and that looked like painters tape, which doesn't stick like normal
tape....All that really bothered her was just the simple fact that Beth Joy actually touched her paws!! Anyone who has
actually worked with rescues that have issues, know that it is not an over night thing you can solve...you take times to help
them get over their issues every chance you can!! Please try to understand that she was not being mean to her dog! You
may think you see it that way...but that isn't the way it really was...Bella Starlet was fine!! and so was the idea of touching
the paws!!
"You and Bella Starlet are my Amber's role model, it is is all about u adn bella starlet, wishing you good luck,
do you know what bella starlet dog's next movie is?"
Hello Beth, I wanted to say a short hello, and tall you that both Kaos & I hope you both
had a nice weekend. it is so nice out. Unfortunately, I cannot enjoy this weather. The sun is my enemy from
the Lupus. SO I am in. I will be laying down soon. Luckily, my hubby bought me a new laptop when I got my
new computer so I have that when I am laying in bed. I enjoy reading e-mails, and I also play POGO. I also enjoy
organizing my photos. I did want to be sure you received my new g-mail address. You can
send mail to my AOL, but I am starting to enjoy the gmail. Well I hope we chat soon again. Hugs to Bella from
Kaos.
-- Thank you, Cassie & Kaos
"You and Bella are doing great . Just know that all of us and our momma and human sister are cheering you on! We would

GOOOO BELLA STARLET DOG
I laughed when she said that too, I think little Belle Starlet is adorable.
Subject: Proud of you! Sent: Fri Aug 15
Message: I just wanted to drop you a pawmail to let you know I am proud of the way you handled everything
with Bella Starlet on last weeks show. I keep reading all the 'wonderful" stuff on the fan club page, and others...and
frankley it kinda ticks me off....but I have come to the realize that most people that run off at the mouth don't have any
clue what they are talking about!
Anyway..I wanted you to know that I thought going ahead with the sponges on Bella's feet was the right thing to do. I
know it was hard for you to do...and no one seems to understand that!
I have a 3 1/2 yr old Shih-Tzu (Lil-e) that we got from a friend of a friend...who had rescued her from a very abusive
home. We have had her since she was 10 months old. It just blows me away that people can be so mean and cruel to a small beautiful
creature like her! She is the most loving, adorable animal in the world...she's never mean (well...sometimes to Maisie)...but
she definately has issues she is still working thru. It took me two years to house break her. and still she would rather go
poo in the garage than the yard....although sometimes she will actually walk out into the yard and go. She has no problem
going pee out there...go figure. Every now and then, she will just decide she doesn't want to go in the yard at all....she
will just lay on the driveway until I talk her into going into the yard....and she doesn't like men at all...it took her about
a year to like my husband...and all he ever did was love on her!!
Anyway...I won't go on forever here...I just wanted you to know....I support what you did...I know how much you love
your Bella Starlet...it is so very obvious. So...You go girl!! and never listen to the whiners!!
keep up the good work Vickie....and Lil-e and Maisie and Sophie and Sugar Baby too!!
" I didn't like that Laura implied Beth was acting inhumane towards Bella (how untrue is that!!). Beth spoils Bella and
she loves it!!! Bella has a problem with her paws (she's a rescue dog and God only knows what she's been through ) but
Beth is working with her paw anxiety which is best for Bella.
" Beth is very gentle with Bella and did not push her in any way. They did a great job and are a great team!!!
"
I really think Bella is a cutie!! "
" First of all there is a BIG difference from calling out someone for dressing up their animal and calling out someone
for acting inhumane towards their animal --- not even fair to compare, at all... The two who found Beth's behavior questionable
were Laura and Laurie - both I believe had their dogs since puppies and were able to give their dog a great home from the
get go.
I do think Bella should get a special award for being so darn cute "
"As much as I enjoy the comments here (LOL) I have to stick my neck out for Bella - she is super cute!!! She reminds
me of my own dog --- although she is not carried in a stroller or rides on a float... but I'm sure she would be all for it
"

Bella Starlet's Mom: Good job tonight!!!!
http://dogscatsetcpojo.blogspot.com/ Thursday, August 14, 2008 Greatest American Dog — Episode 6 Sorry the recap is a little later than
usual. It was kind of a busy day in the newsroom.
Last night's show was all about intelligence, and none of it was about the humans.
The sixth episode of Greatest American Dog opened with Laura (of & Preston) talking about how nice it was to have
Brandy (of & Beacon) gone. Travis (of & Presley) said that he could finally talk to other people with Brandy out of
the picture.
He then spends quality time with Laura — and their dogs. Laura was smothering Presley with smooches. I think even
Travis was taken aback. Or jealous.
The Dog Bone Challenge was called, by Weasel host, an IQ test, but it really was a nose test.
The dogs had to go around a wall to get to their favorite treat. There was a small opening through which they could see
and smell the goody. The humans could only say "Go find it" and "Go get it." The dogs had five minutes.
Most of the dogs did find the treats. Andrew (of Laurie &) kind of walked around his owner. Sort of like what they
did in the dancing competition last week. Well, it didn't work this time.
Beth (ugh) Joy's voice when it was Bella Starlet's turn got higher and higher until, I swear, only the dog could hear
her. The pooch did get the treat in a little over 15 seconds (probably to get as far out of hearing range as possible).
The winner was Bill & Star, in 8.34 seconds. Yea, Texas.
So it was Bill's turn to receive the coveted golden bone. (snicker.)
Now Bill being a gentleman and probably tetched by the sun too asks if he can give the golden bone to somebody else.
(snicker, snicker.)
The Weasel said (and I'm not making this up): "You can do whatever you want. You are holding the golden bone." (guffaw!)
To repay the favor Teresa (of & Leroy) did last week, Bill turns the luxury suite and the "leg up" for the elimination
challenge (oh, I just put 2 and 2 together — leg up and elimination, who writes this stuff? Ha!) over to Teresa.
So the elimination challenge is called Salvador Doggie.
Get it?
A painting has to be created that represents the bond between the dog and the owner AND all the painting must be done
by the dog.
I have to say that the editor of this show kept cutting to Leroy who had the most perfect "you've got to be kidding"
expression I've ever seen.
All the paint was non-toxic, so as to avoid a situation similar to the radium dial painting women of the 1920s.
Oh, and the "leg up"?
Teresa will have the assistance of, oh brother, a dog art instructor.
Not an instructor that teaches someone to paint dogs playing poker on a a velvet canvas, but an instructor that teaches
dogs to paint.
There's a sucker born ...
The paintings will be judged on how creative the project is, and ... this is hard to swallow ... the dog's technique
and use of tools.
Bill has Star paint stars; Teresa said her relationship with Leroy is summed up by learning; Travis has Presley push
paint rollers over stencils by smearing peanut butter on them; Beth (ugh) Joy makes Bella Starlet roll over and the dog yelps,
then puts sponges on the dog's feet tied up with tape and the dog yelps more; Laura & Preston don't do much; Laurie &
Andrew don't do much either but do it with a paint roller; JD has Galaxy roll over with letters on his back and the letters
end up backwards.
I don't think anyone was paying attention when the Weasel said all the painting had to be done by the dogs.
The Best in Show Challenge begins with Beth (ugh) Joy & Bella Starlet. She said it was fun to put the sponges on
the dog's feet and that they were working through the pooch's sensitive paw issue. The judge said it was good they were working
through that issue.
Bill said their painting with the moon and the stars meant Star represented everything to him. The judge said the concept
was touching, but the use of the solar system was predictable.
Travis opened up about having a commitment problem and Presley was the first thing that needed him. The painting looked
like nothing frankly, and the judge said it looked as if he didn't use a lot of technique.
JD tried to convince the judges that the backward letters and incomprehensible words were meant to be that way. No one
bought it. JD said, "Obviously dogs can't spell."
Teresa had a big L on her canvas surrounded by a moon and stars (was that predictable, judges, was it?). She said that
Leroy sometimes drives her over the moon from the barking, but the dog is the moon and the stars to her. The judges were impressed
by her technique. Meh.
Laurie & Andrew's painting looked like a poster or a pep rally slogan, according to the judges. She called the painting
"He ain't heavy." Well, yeah, look at the dog. He's a 10 pound Maltese. The judge said that Andrew's personality wasn't in
the painting. "You kind of missed the boat."
Laura & Preston's painting was supposed to be a great big heart, but to one of the judges it looked like a pink pretzel.
"This sucks," the judge said. Laura then said that she knew that Preston was comfortable doing the painting. She then went
on to say that one dog was crying (cut to Beth [ugh] Joy whose mouth was on the floor) and she didn't want to push him like
that. The judge asked who it was and Laura told them it was Beth (ugh) Joy, without the (ugh), of course.
The judge said that (the royal) we are not into pushing the dogs into doing everything. But there are ways to create
something that is enjoyable and fun and also good. They said that Laura could have done better.
I thought they were judging the dogs' techniques. I guess that would be silly.
Back in the green room, Beth (ugh) Joy asks Laura to explain the "call out." Beth (ugh) Joy said Bella Starlet only yelped
twice (there were more) and at least she challenged her dog. Who'd have thought there would be a cat fight on a dog show?
Travis came to Beth (ugh) Joy's defense, saying she really does take good care of her dog. If Laura's eyes had been daggers,
Travis would be bleeding like a stuck pig.
There's one commitment Travis won't have to worry about.
Back to the judging chamber: Teresa & Leroy were chosen for special recognition. yippee.
The bottom three were Laura & Preston, JD & Galaxy and Laurie & Andrew.
(JD is a putz; he was upset at being in the bottom three and when Galaxy tried to lick his face, he said, "Galaxy, no
more; please don't." And he pulled away. It's just a stupid game and you act like that to your dog? Moron.)
The judges said that Laura did put much time or thought into her painting; Laurie rested on her laurels and didn't put
any work into the painting; and JD's jumbled words and letters were clearly a mistake and he wanted them to believe they were
intentional.
Who's taking the loser lap?
Laura & Preston.
And don't expect the paintings to be on display at the Metropolitan Museum any time soon.

Shelter and Rescued Dogs' Official Birthday Is Officially DOGust the First! CATober the First Coming Soon By
Jackie Pierangelo Pet lovers at North Shore Animal League America acknowledge that actual birth dates of rescue dogs are
unknown. To give these wonderful animals their much deserved recognition, the animal league in Port Washington held a doggie
birthday bash on Aug. 1, to be known hereafter as DOGust the First. This special date will now be the universal birthday for
rescue dogs everywhere. It was a star-studded affair with several stars lending their celebrity to this terrific cause.
Beth Ostrosky, the animal league spokesperson, led the host of celebrities including: Mya - Grammy award-winning recording
artist and actress. Rescue Ink - the Long Island-based animal rescues, humane education group, known for their tough-guy
images and hearts of gold when it comes to animals. Josh Flitter - teen actor, Nancy Drew Movie and the upcoming Ace Ventura
3: Pet Detective. Vivien Cardone - teen actress, A Beautiful Mind, the WB television series Everwood, and starring in
the soon-to-be-released family film, All Roads Lead to Home. Brandon Hannan - teen actor, The Sopranos and appearing in
an upcoming feature film Our Lady of Victory with Ellen Burstyn. Hallie Kate Eisenberg - teen Broadway and commercial
actress. Beth Joy Knutsen and Bella Starlet Dog - competitors on the current CBS network hit show, Greatest American Dog.
And last but not least, pet celebrity Eli the Chihuahua, the 2007 Milkbone Dog Biscuit box model. Ms. Ostrosky commented,
"A birthday celebration is an opportunity to express our sentiments for one another. These wonderful animals, many still patiently
waiting in shelters for their adopters, are so full of life and love and live to please us." Dog lovers nationwide will
be able to actively participate in the DOGust the First celebration by expressing their birthday wishes for their own pets,
or even a family member's or a neighbor's rescued pet with a specially designed Happy DOGust the First e-card greeting. The
greetings, with three colorful designs to choose from, can be sent from the animal league's website, AnimalLeague.org. The
celebration was an amazing and creative event, filled with fun and a lot of warmth. And readers can look forward to CATtober
the First. Mark your calendar. To preview some of the dogs and cats available for adoption at North Shore Animal League,
the world's largest no-kill animal shelter, or to send a DOGust the First e-card, visit AnimalLeague.org. http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/livingandhealth/ci_10210930 Channel surfing On "The Greatest American Dog," Bill & Star win the Dog Bone Suite, but he repays the
favor to Teresa & Leroy, who gave him the deluxe room last week. Teresa & Leroy get a leg up on the competition and
win the Salvador Doggie challenge with their dog-created painting. Laura & Preston are sadly eliminated, but judge Wendy
Diamond is right when she says Pomeranian Preston's painted heart looks like a pink pretzel. Also, Laura shouldn't have tried
to sell out Beth Joy & Bella Starlet during the elimination round. Beth Joy may be annoying, but I don't believe she'd
do anything in a challenge to hurt her mutt. "Greatest American Dog" airs Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBS.

I thought Bella Starlet was a beautiful dog. Her owner did cry a lot, but she seemed to love Bella very much and was
dedicated to caring for and training her. I thought it was a shame they left. Any other fans?

Hi Beth... I just wanted to write and tell you how saddened I was to see you and Bella Starlet leave the
GAD show. She was the reason I enjoyed watching. I actually had tears in my eyes when you were explaining about

I must comment on Bella's outfits and her hairstyle. It is so cute, I wish I could get my Holly Berry to look like that.
She is also as cute as can be. Maybe someday I will cross paths with you and Bella, I would like that a lot. Until
then keep up the great work that you and Bella do and GOOD LUCK! Sincerely Karen and Holly Berry

Hey, Beth
Yah -- we watched all of the episodes you were in then stopped. Is the show over? Do you get to come back
for the finale?
I was sorry to see you and Bella leave, but frankly I found all of the judges to be very annoying and obnoxious
-- and some of their comments and judgments seemed way off to me.
As for the video -- it's not up yet. Haven't even started the editing process. We have about 7 hours of
tape to go through. It turned out to be a bigger project than I had originally planned.
We did get some nice film of you and Bella, but if I had the budget, I would have you guys back for more
footage. That was the first day of filming and as things went along, I thought of other things I'd like to have done. I guess
that's always the way it is.
I bet you will have some great stories to tell about your adventures on GAD. You could write a "tail-all"
book (thought I'd get to that pun before you did :)

Dear Beth Joy, We have been watching Greatest American Dog Show as my 4 year old loves dogs. It is a special
night for her as we let her stay up to watch it. She has been routing for Bella Starlet and when she was eliminated
last night she was devastated. I am from RI and lived in NYC for 7 years. We now live in VA. I was
wondering if the next time we visit NYC my 4 year old can visit Bella if you are free? You did a great job on
the show and we are sad to see you go! Thanks and best of luck to you. Katie Cano
Dear B & B, Thank you so much for your response. It meant the world to my daughter Megan.

argh!!!! Beth and Bella!!! They kickeded you off? Dang!! Those little bitches. Well, Nikki hasn't been able to watch
the show from Paris because for some reason her 'puter won't play it, but she's going to catch up when she gets back. Also,
she wants Bella and I to have a play date. I think Bella is hot!!! Rawr! Nikki says we're both "fixed" (whatever that means),
so there's no chance of puppies, but I think she's wrong. Bella, I wuv you!

for the day. But she says when she gets home she can make you a photo. Would you like an animation or just an edited pic?
Doesnt matter to me just let us know what theme you want for the photo : )
Hope you are doing good today! Those treats sure look yummy in your photo! BOL Did you get to eat some of those after
the photoshoot?
There is little to nothing you can do about being kicked out of Canine Academy but I think it was TOTALLY unfair!
Andrew should have been canned NOT Bella. Bella didn't bite the puppies....Plus it was the STUPIDEST task I have ever
seen....SO UNFAIR! My kids NEVER would have rouded up three puppies. They're NOT hounds. They're LOVEY dogs.
So unrealistic! Sorry Beth. They kicked out Bella because they thought you were too anxious. Seems so unfair.
This show is about AMERICAS BEST DOG not about the owners. Wish I could help! It just was NOT fair what happened.
GLad my kids were barking SO LOUD I didn't hear what you said at the end. I would have been sobbing. Bella looked
so sad....almost like she knew but didn't know why? Just sucks. The only reason they kept Andrew was because
he is foo foo. Are the reviews up still? Think show will run its course? Ruth
You were pawsome on the tv show! Hope you had fun.

`Greatest American Dog' Eliminee Is On Hollywood A-List Friday August 22, 2008
NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) -- One "Greatest American Dog" eliminee doesn't need reality TV
to make it as a "bone-afide" doggy actress.
Beth Joy Knutsen and her mutt Bella Starlet were eliminated from "Greatest American
Dog" this past Wednesday (Aug. 20), but Bella isn't hurting for on-air work.
The pup is a professional doggy actress who's starred in TV commercials, movies,
and magazines.
Knutsen says Bella is a total Hollywood queen, and has a strict beauty regimen
designed to keep up with her fellow actresses.
Bella starts her mornings off with "Doga" -- dog yoga -- and maintains a healthy
diet of fruit and vegetables.
She's pampered by an A-list groomer who braids her hair and creates flashy custom
bows for her doggy 'do.
All the pooch primping gets Bella ready for the red carpet, which Knutsen says
she owns.
She explains, "Bella walks the carpet wearing a Marilyn Monroe dress and the
paparazzi love her. She does turns for them and poses for pictures using her best angles!"
"Greatest American Dog" airs Wednesdays on CBS.

August 21 at 10:07pm Hey Beth, I've been watching the show...sorry you had to leave last night! I must say that
show is pretty amusing. What the hell was up with the judges arguing? I couldn't believe the editors kept that in! The apology
looked forced to me, you'll have to fill me in what really happened. :) The weird thing is, I usally hate that Wendy Diamond
judge, think she's a total bitch, but I actually agreed with her last night. Bella's really cute, and I hope you had a
blast. From your profile, I'd say you did! Oh and what's going on with Travis & Laura? Did they ever hook up? Now that
you're gone, I want to see Bill & Star win. He's such a cute old man... :) N

Subject: Greatest Dog Show Body: Heya Beth, DJ here. I am so very proud of you and Bella Starlet. I moved
to Florida in Jan of this year. And I have made many wonderful friends, and when I checked out our reunion site and that blurb
on you being on the Greatest American Dog was there, I told everyone to watch. You and Bella won many hearts down here!!! I
have watched every episode, and I cried when you were eliminated. I , and many here watching the show felt it should have
been not you who should have been eliminated. I just wanted to email you and let you know you have many fans here in Florida,
we were so glad you told off that bitch who tred ratting you out on the painting, when you were clearly up front with the
judges on her paws issues. So glad she got the boot. If you ever come to Florida, you and your husband, and Bella Starlet
will always be welcome and have a place to stay. Thank you for being a dog lover. I have 2 dogs. They are my life. I would
love to bring my dog Cody on that show. He'll be 2 in October. But I need to train him more. He's clearly not up to the caliber
as the dogs on that show. By the way, we can't stand Laurie and Andrew. She is a bitch. Maybe it was just the editing,
but really, I hate her, and hop she loses in the final episode. I'm kind of rooting for Travis and Preston. I really liked
Bill and Star as well. But you are our favorite and week after week, we rooted for you. Job well Done Beth Joy!!!!

I think the latest episode of Greatest American Dog should have been called puppies! It's like TV gold, just mix it up by adding over a dozen adorable Golden Retriever pups.
I caught up with Beth Joy, who was eliminated this week, and she opened up about the last episode and her cute pooch, Bella
Starlet Dog. Once again, I got some great behind-the-scenes clues and views – check out her answers below!
On the digging challenge:
- Before every dog-bone challenge, we actually get a practice. All dogs dig differently – she actually digs with her
nose – and she did so good that I thought she was gonna dig, find Mommy, and it would be awesome.
- I'm completely claustrophobic but I said to myself "I'm going to do this, Bella did great on the dig and she's gonna find
me . . . I'll sit for five minutes and have a panic attack for her to find me." But you have to understand when you watch
the show, there's reasons why we choose things and I had a feeling but instead she said 'I'm going to be like Lassie and I'm
going to bark for someone to come rescue my mom."
- The thing with the dig is every time she did the practice, one of the trainers kept pulling the treats away from her after
she found it and I think that upset her; she knew she wasn't going to get the treat again. That was all part of it –
what you see is what you get on these shows, not the real experience.
On meeting the puppies:
- Actually with this challenge, we did it the day before and Bella did great in the maze, she came out and went through
it a few times but, when you film, there's hours and hours in between. So when Bella came out and greeted the puppies, she
was excited but then it was three hours until we did the challenge. It was 105 degrees out that day. Bella overheated, Star
overheated, and Presley overheated.
Where is Bella trying to go in that picture up top? Learn the surprising answer when you read more.
On her stopping to dig under the maze:
- When she went into that hole that you see, that was where one of the cameras were. And they didn't cover it up, they should
have covered it up, and she wasn't supposed to go in there. But they never restarted our clock. She saw somebody in there
(there are little forts with cameras so that they can get those angles of the dogs running) and so she had gone in there thinking
"hey, maybe Mommy's with this guy hanging out." And I couldn't see over the hedge so I was trying to go low to the ground
to call her.
On pushing her dog:
- By that time of the day, she was so overheated, it was like "whatever you want to do Bella, that's fine don't worry."
Like "come on you want a biscuit, just come through, come to Mommy and we'll go jump in the pool." I would never push my dog
the way that Bill pushed his dog, we were all scared at what he was doing to Star, it made me worry about Star. I would never
push my dog to a limit like that, it was really insane and unfortunate. I really don't think we should have gone home. It
was about citizenship, maybe she didn't lead the puppies out, but at least she didn't try to eat the puppies.

Apparently dancing with dogs is an exercise that fascinates the judges, because a group dance was the challenge in the
first episode, and this week, individual dance routines were the elimination task. Before they got to the dancing, though,
there was the Dog Bone Suite competition, which was a coordination challenge involving mud and a balance beam.
“I Might Be an Oddball, But I Wouldn’t Hurt a Fly” – An Interview with Greatest American Dog’s
Beth Joy Knutsen and Bella Starlet by Kari Kennedy -- 08/22/2008
Beth Joy and her beloved pound pup Bella Starlet went home from
Canine Academy this week in a pool of tears. What did Beth Joy have to say about dressing her dog up and the tongue-lashing
she received from Judge Wendy? And what was her perspective on why Laura spoke up with the judges after the painting challenge?
Beth Joy is a true character whose excitement was infectious when talking to her on the phone. At one time in her career,
she impersonated Seinfeld’s Elaine, so you can see how a big, bold personality could be used. Undoubtedly, Beth
Joy was one of the biggest characters on the show and a reality producer's dream. She was vocal and, most of all, passionate
about her dog and her thoughts. This allowed for a lot of drama in the house while she was there.
Beyond that, Bella Starlet has her own career, which obviously helped in giving the pair a "leg up," so to speak, with
getting onto the show in the first place. Bella has been in numerous commercials, including a Super Bowl ad for Dr. Pepper,
and even has her own independent film.
This week, Bella Starlet and Beth Joy were eliminated from the house after not doing well on a final challenge. You can
read the recap here.
RNO: Thanks for taking a few minutes to chat for the RNO readers, Beth Joy. Is Bella Starlet there with you?
Beth Joy: Thanks, and yes, she's had some watermelon and is taking a mid-morning nap close by.
RNO: How did you and Bella Starlet get selected for the show? Bella has her own entertainment résumé?
Beth Joy: [CBS casting] found us and called us! I was so excited. We didn't have to go through the whole audition
process, we went straight to being cast. They invited Bella and I got to come along.
RNO: Bella was the only rescue dog on the show, right? How old was she when you got her?
Beth Joy: Yes, she was. There should've been more. I got her at ten months and now she's ten-and-a-half years old.
RNO: With her being a rescue dog, you didn’t know what she'd been through before you got her. Has she always
had problems with her feet?
Beth Joy: We think she was hit for having accidents in the house. They wouldn't let her outside. We got her from
a woman who knew she was being abused and made it a mission to get Bella out of that house.
She was hit a lot, so that's why when people go to pet her and pull away too quickly, she sometimes snaps at them. We don’t
know everything that happened. It takes a long time to get a dog through any issues; any behaviorist will tell you that. I
still praise her for going to the bathroom (laughing). I believe in positive encouragement. She's my world!
RNO: There seems to be quite some controversy over paw-gate and two distinct camps on how you handled the painting
challenge with other dog owners and trainers out there. Some say you did a great job in working through the issues like you're
supposed to and others vehemently opposed Bella's little yelps. When you were doing the painting challenge, were you really
trying to work through issues with her little paws? Did you decide to try other methods besides the sponges on the paws that
we didn't see?
Beth Joy: Oh man! Those yelps were voiceover yelps! It created drama. I never forced her to do anything and didn't
push her. She shuts down so I stop her and don't push her further.
The paw issue, well, it takes time to work through an issue. We worked on that painting for, like, 12 hours. It was a perfect
time to take the time, work through her paw problems. I was always very kind and gentle. We also did some of the other techniques
like pushing the brushes, rolling over and stuff as well, but that didn't get shown.
In facing the judges Laura didn't want to go home so bringing up the work I was doing with Bella was her way of possibly
staying in the game. The way the judges were talking, they liked our painting best, so I was surprised we didn't win that
one. It was pathetic on Laura's part. She's great with her dog and loves him, though.
RNO: When I interviewed Laura last week, she said that she wasn't the only one who spoke up about Bella crying during the paint challenge. Were there others?
Beth Joy: There were alliances in the house and they decide to all-out fight for Laura to stay. They all had something
to say. Travis and JD knew I didn't hurt my dog. I explained to the judges that she had paw issues and that I was working
on them with her during that time. I explained this while I was getting judged, so it was all out there.
It's a reality show, folks! They show all the funniest stuff and the drama. I might be an oddball, but I wouldn't hurt
a fly or hurt Bella.
I had a great time and great bonding experience with Bella during the paint challenge. It proves that what we have is truly
special and we got the chance to show America what we have together.
RNO: Back to the second challenge, was it clear that you weren't supposed to have clothes on the dogs? Because it
was sort of a surprise to see only Bella had on clothes, even though Brandy liked to dress Beacon as well. You seemed surprised
at Judge Wendy's comments and fought back.
Beth Joy: I was very surprised! Wendy does fashion shows for dogs and we've come in contact before. When she said
[that dogs shouldn't be wearing clothes] I wondered why she was talking out of both sides of her face.
With Bella, she wears dresses on the red carpet, wags her tail and loves it. Before coming to California this summer, I
shaved her down to help out with the heat. The clothes could help protect her from the sun. But the dinner party invitation
asked for appropriate attire. In my eyes, that's a pretty dress for Bella! It's fun!
It's funny because you can't sit there and say that a $41 billion-a-year industry, of which about a quarter of it is dog
fashion, is wrong! You can't tell America not to dress dogs up. It's funny because one of my cats wears a dress and gets mad
when you take it off. Whatever!
RNO: Both of this week's challenges seemed more biased towards the larger dogs. Why did you decide to have Bella
Starlet dig instead of ringing the bell? It seems like it would've been smarter to have Leroy try to dig for Teresa.
Beth Joy: Actually, before each challenge, we get to have a practice session. She digs with her nose and did well
in practice. She did well in practice so we figured she'd do fine in the challenge, too. It's funny because I'm so claustrophobic
and being in that box for five minutes was awful! She pulled a dog card [during the challenge] and decided not to do it. I'm
okay with that, though.
RNO: And with the puppy-herding challenge, the little dogs again seemed to get lost among the larger, rambunctious
puppies and at a distinct disadvantage.
Beth Joy: With this challenge, we came out to greet and Bella went crazy for the puppies. But by the time we got
through the day, the dogs were all exhausted and hot. Several dogs overheated. By the time Bella came to do it, she just wanted
to go to the swimming pool. All you can ask is that she does her best, but at least she didn't bite the pups. She just wasn't
interested in them.
At this time, our publicist cut in and told us we had only time for one last, quick question. I was disappointed not to
be able to talk about the huge fight between the judges, but it looks like we'll save that bit of comedy for JD's interview.
RNO: Is there anything else you'd like to tell the readers about your time in the house or about Bella Starlet?
Beth Joy: She rules the world. She's fabulous and I love her with all my heart!

from flash news: `Greatest American Dog' Eliminee Is On Hollywood A-List Date:Friday August 22, 2008 Copyright:Wireless
Flash News Inc. (Wireless Flash) -- One "Greatest American Dog" eliminee doesn't need reality TV to make it as a "bone-afide"
doggy actress. Beth Joy Knutsen and her mutt Bella Starlet were eliminated from "Greatest American Dog" this past Wednesday
(Aug. 20), but Bella isn't hurting for on-air work. The pup is a professional doggy actress who's starred in TV commercials,
movies, and magazines. Knutsen says Bella is a total Hollywood queen, and has a strict beauty regimen designed to keep
up with her fellow actresses. Bella starts her mornings off with "Doga" -- dog yoga -- and maintains a healthy diet of
fruit and vegetables. She's pampered by an A-list groomer who braids her hair and creates flashy custom bows for her doggy
'do. All the pooch primping gets Bella ready for the red carpet, which Knutsen says she owns. She explains, "Bella walks
the carpet wearing a Marilyn Monroe dress and the paparazzi love her. She does turns for them and poses for pictures using
her best angles!" "Greatest American Dog" airs Wednesdays on CBS.

'Dog' Owners And Their Cattiest Comments
Time to catch up with "Greatest American Dog."
I've been watching every week, and it seems like it's going to come down to a contest between J.D./Galaxy versus Theresa/Leroy.
Those teams seem consistently to be winning the most challenges and as a storyline, it's perhaps intriguing. J.D. is a very
discipline-oriented master, while Theresa seems very laid-back. Also, of the dogs remaining, Galaxy and Leroy seem to me the
cutest.
In last night's episode, we got to see truly cute puppies: golden retrievers. I may be biased by ownership of one of that
breed as a kid, but I really don't think many dogs can match up with golden retrievers when it comes to looks, especially
when we're talking about young dogs.
Our owners and dogs were supposed to lead three of the puppies through a maze. And when Bella Starlet not only failed to
lead a single pup out, but didn't make it out herself, it was clear she was heading home.
Over the last three weeks, we've seen Brandi and Beacon, Laura and Preston and now Beth Joy and Bella Star expelled from
Canine Academy. In an attempt to catch up, I'll post the highlights of my conversations with each of the three instead of
the transcript I usually do.
Let's start with my talk with Beth Joy and Bella Starlet.
She started off by saying she felt "shafted" because even though Bella Starlet didn't lead any of the puppies out of the
maze, at least she didn't bite or snipe at them like Andrew and Star. "I think I'd rather have my dog have my dog have me
try to rescue her than try to eat a puppy," she said. "It was about citizenship."
She went on, "From the time we were introduced to the puppies to the time we actually started the competition, it was about
three hours. It was about 105 degrees that day. In the beginning, when Bella saw the puppies she went darting toward them.
She was so excited. Three hours later, she could care less. It was so hot. No dog wanted to be out there. Presley got overheated.
Star got overheated." At one point, Bella Starlet even had to get IV fluids.
Some of the challenges by their nature, Beth Joy said, give different dogs an advantage. Bella Starlet had somewhat of
one when it came to being photographed. The maze, she continued, gave larger dogs one. "I'm so short I couldn't see where
she was at all, and it was very hard to navigate her and where she was."
In a way, I'm saddest to see her go. From when the descriptions of the dogs and their owners came out, she seemed a little
out there. She has a tattoo of her dog and she lists her profession as managing Bella Starlet's career.
When I asked her what prompted her to get the tattoo, she said that it was because Bella Starlet's her "soulmate. She's
part of everything I do. She's my muse and my mentor. She inspires me daily. I don't know where I'd be in my life without
her. We rescued each other. She's my world."
And as for how she can sustain herself on Bella Starlet's career, she said she has three other showbiz animals who she
also manages. "They do a commercial here, a photo shoot there," she said. Beth Joy also writes a couple columns in local magazines.
And, curiously enough, she also used to get some work as a lookalike for Elaine from "Seinfeld."
She has bellastarletdog.com. And she also does a lot of other animal work, including renting out one of her dogs to let
people play with her and helping with public relations for animal charities.
She defended herself against the notion that she's as odd as she might seem to viewers. "Experiencing it and watching it
are two different things," she said.
Beth said she would crack up the producers by saying stuff and singing songs. "I'm funny and goofy, but I'm not a total
spaz like that. They (the producers) wanted to make a character. I get it."
She also said that she may seem fussy with all the pills and powders she gives Bella Starlet, but that she's overprotective
for a reason. She had a previous dog die and she wants to do everything to make sure that Bella Starlet has as long a life
as possible. She even converted former contestant Ron to feeding Tillman only organic dog food. Bella had had two surgeries
on one leg and a heart murmur; she's had no problems like that with her current regimen. "I take better care of Bella than
I do myself," she said. "I would hope every person in America reading this would do the same for their dogs because health
and nutrition is so important, and people take that for granted."
Beth was still a little bitter about Laura trying to call Beth out for allegedly overtaxing Bella Starlet during the painting
episode. "It was completely premeditated on her part to go out there and throw me under the bus. She has no scruples. She
made that choice. 'You know what? I'm going to sit around for hours on end and put my makeup on instead of working on a project
with my dog.'"
While Beth woke up at 5 a.m. to finish the project, she said Laura wasn't even outside till 11 a.m., and hadn't started
stenciling yet. "In no way, shape or form was I hurting my dog whatsoever," Beth Joy added. "Those yelps were voiceover yelps.
That's not even how my dog yelps. So they were trying to make a story about it."
One of the challenges with the show was constantly performing. "Some of the best trick dogs on that show sometimes just
said, 'I'm just going to sit here and not listen to you right now," Beth Joy said. All that makes it hard to figure out who
might win, she added.
Beth Joy recalled being terrified by dogs as a youngster because she was almost mauled by a German Shepherd. "I've completely
come around, and I understand the nuances of dogs," she said. "I get it." Before Beth Joy and Bella Starlet, Laura and Preston
got eliminated...
