One of the stars of CBS’ The Greatest American Dog, is known for having the largest wardrobe of any dog on the planet. What you may not know about her is that she donates a small part of her earnings to dog-related charities. Owner Beth Joy takes dressing up her mutt to new heights putting Bella Starlet to bed in pajamas. Bella laps up attention when she wears her Statue of Liberty costume and makes tails wag in her Marilyn Monroe dress. Here, she is pictured wearing a pink tutu and a designer gray sweater. The big question is can Bella do a pirouette in this getup?

2008 DogCatemy Celebrity Gala Spotlights Saving Pets' Lives

There was thunderous applause along with woofs and barks at North Shore Animal League America's 3rd Annual DogCatemy Celebrity Gala, at Capitale in New York City, on November 6th. With more than 400 attendees, on both two legs and four, this black-tie event where people rubbed elbows and paws with celebrities and their pets proved to be a thrilling evening filled with fun and entertainment.

The media clamored for the best shots as celebrities strolled the Red Carpet at the star-studded charity event. Some of the stars that "pawsed" for the buzzing paparazzi included Beth and Howard Stern, Grammy Award-winning Artist Mıa, Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden, tennis legend Monica Seles and news anchor Jodi Applegate. Unfortunately, Master of Ceremonies Richard Belzer fell ill and was unable to attend. However, TV correspondent Maria Menounos and Howard Stern show Executive Producer Gary Dell' Abate saved the day, taking over hosting the event.

DogCatemy Celebrity Gala Crystal Collar Awards were handed out for categories including; Best Dogumentary, Best Musical, Best Pawformance, Best Tail Waggin' Comedy, Best Reel Life Tail and Best in Show. This year also featured an online charity auction that continued for a week after the event was over where proceeds benefitted the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at the Animal League.

One of the highlights of the evening was when the King of all Media, Howard Stern, presented a special Crystal Angel Award to his wife and Animal League friend and spokesperson, Beth Stern. The award recognized her tireless efforts and dedication to the plight of homeless shelter pets. He told the crowd how "Beth was his angel as well as the Animal League's angel" and good naturedly joked that he often has to share some of the time he has to spend with her with the countless animals she helps save through her work for the Animal League.

The dog-friendly DogCatemy Celebrity Gala reflects North Shore Animal League America's belief in the special bond that exists between humans and pets. In addition to rescuing, nurturing and adopting more than 20,000 pets each year into loving homes, the Animal League strives to increase public awareness of the importance of adopting shelter pets to save their lives.

Thank you to all who participated in this wonderful evening; and thank you for sharing our passion for pets.

All proceeds from this event support North Shore Animal League America's mission of rescuing pets throughout the world and placing them in loving homes.

Dear Beth Joy,
I've written this recommendation of your work to share with other LinkedIn users.

Details of the Recommendation: "I remember watching the Greatest American Dogs and thinking "This woman is hilarious!" I was impressed by Beth Joy's ambition and her willingness to tell the judges what was on her mind. She didn't bow to them or play into their game of power.

Beth Joy and I met at the beginning of October in Chicago through the H.H. Backer Pet Trade Show. She proved to be exactly the person you saw on television - fiesty and full of love and life. Her attachment to her precious dog Bella Starlet is so beautiful and truly demonstrates the depth of character she has. I wish only the best for Beth Joy and Bella Starlet. If you read her work as a writer you will be amazed and impressed - like I was."

Im at my vet for a follow up visit. Anyway I see a poster for wisdom panel mixed breed analysis. The copy mentions Riff. That's your dog!! K

Beth 'n' Bella to the rescue!

November 6, 2008

They were voted off CBS-TV's "Greatest American Dog," but Morton Grove native Beth Joy Knutsen and Bella Starlet Dog refuse to stay in the doghouse and whine.

Since leaving the reality show in August, Knutsen and Bella Starlet, now Manhattan residents, continue to enjoy their newfound fame. In the annual Greenwich Village Halloween parade, Knutsen and Bella planned to ride their "Totally Paw-some '80s" float dressed as the cartoon character Jem and Strawberry Shortcake, posing alongside paintings of Knutsen's other two dogs, Oscar and Riff, dressed as Mr. T and Joan Collins.

Knutsen and Bella Starlet are nominated in the "best musical" category for the 2008 DogCatemy Awards, held Nov. 6 at the North Shore Animal League America's annual gala in New York. Their entry is a video about their relationship, scored to the Turtles' song "Happy Together."

"We have an appeal to people who are passionate about their dogs and about life," said Knutsen, who sports a tattoo of Bella Starlet on her left leg. "I get e-mails from a woman with lupus and a woman with cancer, saying they are in so much pain, but watching us on TV makes them smile."

Rescue dog advocate

Knutsen tirelessly advocates for rescue dogs, warning that more pets are being abandoned as economic times get tougher. Scarcely less busy is Bella Starlet, a blonde mixed breed with strawberry and silver highlights. A rescue dog herself, Bella Starlet has a forthcoming line of dog-and-human jewelry, a new clothing line, and a new foundation to help raise money for rescue agencies.

Knutsen's resilience was forged in Morton Grove and Niles West High School, where she was mocked by the local counterparts of "Mean Girls." Even worse, at age 4, she was "almost mauled to death" by a neighbor's German shepherd.

"The dog came charging around the corner and knocked me down," she said. "My face was on the ground and the dog was about to go for my neck. The only reason I'm alive today is my neighbor was outside and somehow got the dog away."

She was "absolutely terrified" by dogs until one day, at age 13, she fell in love with a Yorkie named Ernie at a Skokie pet store. Today, Knutsen enjoys helping children overcome their fear of dogs, believing that kids who don't understand animals may someday become animal abusers.

"I like to make sure everyone's treated fairly," she said.
