Dogs love us unconditionally. There's no pretense or agendas. No complaints. They never fail to greet us at
the door with passionate exuberance-even if we just left the room for five minutes to take out the trash-and they simply put
us in a better mood.

Dear Friends....
Over the past week in NYC, the snow has been melting....unfortunately,
along with that, came an electricution to a dog named BARKIS in Park Slope Brooklyn. My friend Gayle has forwarded us
this petition that everyone should sign....to have Coned put an end to this frazzled city wiring and to protect people and
dogs from being electricuted. Sadly, BARKIS, the Collie, passed away from his injuries....now his Dad is doing everything
he can to prevent something so senseless from happening again. Please join us in our fight....with adding your signature to
the many on there you are helping tremendously in memory of BARKIS and any other dog or person this has happened to!
Beth,
This is a friend of mine. It's heartwrenching. Please spread the word.
Best, Gayle
Hello Everyone,
It is with sadness that I ask you to please read my request below.
As you may have
read in the papers or seen on local TV news, my partner, Danny Kapilian was walking our dog to work last
Wednesday in Park Slope. Due to a live electrical wire underneath the sidewalk, Barkis was electrocuted and died.
Recently, there have been a number of incidents where pedestrians and pets have been shocked by electrical
current through a sidewalk, near a lamp post or manhole cover.
I ask you that you please go to the link below to
sign a petition asking Mayor Bloomberg to address this issue now.
Stop Stray Voltage Electrocutions Friends of Barkis
We are a group of New York City citizens concerned about
the ongoing problem of stray voltage causing electrocutions and shocks to pedestrians and animals.
On February 15,
2006, Danny Kapilian was walking his dog Barkis on 3rd Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues in Park Slope, Brooklyn in front
of a Con Ed Substation when Barkis was electrocuted and later died due to stray voltage from a street lamp that was removed
two years prior.
A live wire, which was not properly terminated when the street lamp was removed, was sitting beneath
the city street and any child, adult or pet could have suffered the same horrible consequences.
For years now, stray
voltage problems have affected the public safety of people and pets due to eroding city wiring, the use of rock salt to eliminate
snow and faulty maintenance work. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed immediately with citywide inspections
and repairs not just of service boxes and manhole covers but also of city sidewalks.
A number of incidents have been
reported lately of frayed wires in conduits conducting current to city sidewalks when the sidewalks become saturated from
either rain or melting snow.
We want to walk down our city sidewalks and be safe from electrocution and shocks. We
are asking that Mayor Bloomberg, The City of New York, Con Edison and the Department of Transportation take appropriate action
now before another serious incident occurs.
We, at New York Tails, have a link for you to go to if know
of any "Hot Spots" around the city and its boroughs....here is a letter from my editor Diane West:
Beth: I'm on it. I've been feverently working trying to get some kind of INTELLIGENT answer from
Con Ed (with little luck, but I am on their ass, believe me) and if you go to this New York Tails link you'll see I've asked people to email their "hot spots" to me. I've already gotten a number
of them and even pictures, which I'm going to have posted within the next day or two.
If you want to forward this
information/service to anyone be my guest. The more people respond the more we can be proactive.
The purpose is to
try to get as many people as possible to let us know where the "hot spots" or potential "hot spots" (ie, damaged light poles
with open or compromised panels) are.
I contacted Claire in 1998, and she brought my amazing
BELLA into my life!!

When I adopted Bella in 1998, we rescued each other. We are soulmates. She is my muse/mentor in
happiness, unconditional love, creativity and charity. She is unique, intelligent, funny, and talented. She does commercials,
print work and cute tricks. I believe it is fate that we are together. Her beauty, outside and in, is enchanting. We do everything
together. We even share the same eye color. Her image is tattooed on my leg forever. By enjoying and cherishing everyday with
my peppy puppy, she shows me how lucky I truly am, reminding me that age is just a number, and that bliss equals youth. Good
Karma NYC.

cat owner--this book pulls no punches! Written by Richard Smith, published by Workman Publishing. Paperback retails for $8.95.

Cat Dancer: One of the most economical gifts out there, for about $5.00 this very simple device will keep you and your

Birds:
Lucky Bird toys: Recommended highly by the Manhattan Bird Club, these "foraging toys" help replicate behavior birds might
do in the wild. Their puzzle-like nature provides mental stimulation for any bird by providing crevices where food treats
can be hidden for the birds to find. Comes in beginner and advanced levels. Grey Feather Toys and Jungle Toys are also brands
recommended by the Manhattan Bird Club. The Lucky Bird Toys shown on the segment are about $10.00 each, available at Petco
at Union Square (17th Street and Broadway.)
Polly Want a Piñata: A fun, colorful piñata for birds! Fill it with your bird's favorite treat and watch them play! Made
with vegetable-based ingredients. Encourages them to think and exercise in order to get to their treat. $10.99 at Petco Union
Square, 17th Street and Broadway.
A Stay at Nona's Nest in the Village: It's very hard to find a good pet sitter, let alone if you have a pet that is other
than a dog or cat. Nona is a trusted source. Price varies. On Bedford Street, the phone number is (212)414-2566.
A Well-Bird Visit with Dr. Darby of the Center for Specialized Veterinary Care: Call for pricing. Highly recommended both
by Manhattan Bird Club and Long Island Parrot Society. Visit www.vetspecialist.com.
Wild Bird Tones for your phone: Download authentic wild bird tones to your phone at www.wildtones.net for a few bucks each download. Your bird will think the "call" is for them! Partial proceeds donated to bird welfare efforts.
Critters/Small Caged Mammals:
Chubes: Chinchilla and other small mammal owners love to give their critters "Chubes" by T-Rex. Much like birds, small
animals in cages and tanks need mental stimulation and do get bored in their cages w/o playthings, contrary to popular belief.
Anything chewable – and preferable edible, is the way to go with small mammals. Chubes fits the bill and comes in several
sizes. $5.99 at Petco, Petland Discounts and other pet stores.
Critter-Operated Chopper: Made by SuperPet. A motorcycle-shaped vehicle that runs on hamster, mouse or gerbil power! Great
in case there's another transit strike. A good, safe, controlled way for them to get their needed exercise, and fun to watch!
$17.00, available at Petco.
Fish:
Python No-Spill Clean and Fill Aquarium Maintenance Kit: New York Aquarium senior aquarist Frank Greco and writer of New
York Tails "Think Tank" column says "no hobbyist should be without this." Great for city apartments where you don't want to
drag buckets of sloshing water across the floor, this flexible tube hooks right up to your sink and helps you both clean and
fill your tank without having to move it! $55.00, available at Petco, Petland Discounts, Petqua on Broadway and 99th Street
and other aquarium specialty shops. www.pythonproducts.com.
SpongeBob Square Pants Bikini Bottom Aquarium: Compact and colorful, this kit is great for small spaces and countertops
and encourages children to take an active interest in the lives of the fish inside. Easy to use for beginning fish hobbyists.
Contains a 1.8 gallon double-wave tank, cover, bubble-wall aeration and filter system, pump, tubing, gravel, interchangeable
vinyl cling backdrop and a SpongeBob Square Pants Aqua Figure. Complete kit for $32.99 at Petco and Petland Discounts.
Reptiles:
Grotto by Penn-Plax: The beautiful, realistic design of this hide-a-way for small reptiles (small lizards, salamanders,
garden snakes) is both fun and functional. Reptiles are very sensitive to temperature, both hot and cold, and this provides
the latter in the form of cool, dark places to hide and slide. Unique design also allows reptile owners to peek and see what's
going on without disturbing the inhabitants. $14.99 at Petco at Union Square.

A Dog’s Life: DVD Release Party Photographed by Linus Gelber
On Thursday, December 15 th, in lower Manhattan’s swanky Meat Packing District, one of the area’s
very many exclusive parties was taking place on the much frequented Hudson Street. The guest of honor, Chelsea was donned
in a chic, royal red, kimono, while her many celebrity guests, some models, others actors, did not pay heed to a specific
dress code and bore a wide range of trendy and tailor made outfits, including posh furs, army inspired tops and some even
wore black tie tuxedoes. The music was pumping, the security was tight and the food was just delicious. However, unlike the
other celebrity parties taking place on Hudson Street, this one was not at your typical hip hop club or posh lounge venue,
in fact most of the guests were not even standing on two feet. This unusual party rented out the WoofSpa and was catered to
an exclusive group of canines, who were celebrating with their fellow Shi-Tzu Chelsea, for the DVD launch of her first film,
A Dog’s Life.
The Happy Couple - Kobey-Rose and David Ray
Beth with Oscar Or is it Oscar with Beth
Chelsea Kirshenbaum, “dog-ter” to producer, Gayle Kirshenbaum has received much acclaim for
her first feature film, A Dog’s Life, which follows Chelsea and Gayle in their search for love and meaning
in Manhattan. The movie has become quite popular, having been screened throughout the country among canine lovers and their
pets, and was recently developed into DVD format.
To celebrate the launch of Chelsea’s DVD and her recent fame, Chelsea and Gayle gathered together
their closest friends, family and fans at the high end WoofSpa for a night of drinks, food and festivities.
Filmmaker Gayle Kirshenbaum
Chelsea and Gayle drew a wide range of guests, many of which have an invested interest in improving the
lives of the canine community at large.
Keith, the owner of the WoofSpa has always loved dogs (having two of his own) and decided two
and a half years ago to make a career switch in order to improve the quality of life for dogs in Manhattan. Keith developed
the concept of the WoofSpa, which offers pups luxury treatments, as well as babysitting care when their owners are away on
vacation or at work. “We are open from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm and we are the most affordable in the City,” Keith
explained.
Not only does Keith offer great care for his pups, but he also hosts a wide range of benefits and social
events at his spa, geared to both dogs and their owners. “We hosted Cause for Paws,” Keith explained, which raised
awareness and money for important pet charities. Keith also hosts social events for his clients including, Leashes and Lovers
and Singles and Dogs.
Chelsea
The two floor space ensures that all dogs have ample room to hang out and run around.
Tara (a Chihuahua owner) brought her six month old pooch Stinky to the party to mingle with some new and
old friends. Stinky, a decked out pup, wore a black fur coat from Target’s pet collection and a diamond studded necklace.
Tara is very active in the Chihuahua community and is involved in many Chihuahua events and groups. “I read about the
DVD launch party in Match.com’s Chihuahua section” she said.
Beth, owner of four dogs, only brought one pup with her, Oscar, a Tibetan terrier, to the party. Although
Oscar holds a special place in her heart, it is her eldest dog, Bella that has a permanent reserved space on Beth’s
leg. “I had Bella tattooed on my leg” Beth explained while rolling up her pants. “She’s my soul mate”.
Bella is achieving much celebrity and has recently been featured in several doggy commercials and was photographed on the
cover of some major dog magazines. Bella will soon be celebrating her eighth birthday and Beth is organizing a “pawty”
in her honor. Bella, a very active member of the canine community, works as an associate at Tails, an advertising agency that
promotes animal products and events.
Rex in the City with his proud owner Amy Parks
Chelsea, the guest of honor, was not feeling too well the night of her party, but she still persevered and
acted like a true welcoming host. Seated at the front of the spa with her mom, Gayle, Chelsea greeted each guest as they came
in. “She’s a little tired but Chelsea is having a great time” Gayle explained, while stroking the subdued
pup on her lap.
The room was replete with treats for both puppies and humans. An open bar area and finger food stand was
set up for the owners, while Elise, developer of Down Town Bites, set up her colorful wagon on the other end of the room.
Several years ago, Elise created Down Town Bites, a natural, organic snack that is both pet and person friendly. “This
way” Elise explained, “You and your dog can share a snack while sitting in the park together”. During the
summer months, Elise rides her packed wagon into Union Square Park on the weekends and sells her beautifully packaged, tasty
snacks, which come in a variety of flavors to people passing by with their pets. In describing her wagon Elise explained,
“Its very old style New York”.
Some of the guests have actually developed friendships as a result of their dogs’ relationship. Susan
and Cheryl, both dog owners met at the Fort Tryon Dog Run, where their dogs, Lihalo and Floyd became fast friends. “Lihalo
and Floyd are best friends” Susan explained. After having not seen each other for a while, when Lihalo was sick “The
two ran towards each other and were so happy to reunite” Susan said.
Another special treat, which has been popping up all over the City and is now standard at the WoofSpa, is
Street Treats, a vending machine that contains bite size pet treats for pups. The machine contains little capsules that hold
mini biscotti and other snacks for owners to treat their pups.
In addition to the many celebrity pups at the party, were Vanilla and Cinnamon, both Chihuahuas and dressed
in black tie attire. Vanilla wore a black tie tuxedo, while Cinnamon wore a fitted, red cocktail dress. Ada, the owner of
the two pups is very excited about her pups’ celebrity. “Vanilla was featured on the first cover of New York Dog
Magazine” Ada ebulliently exclaimed. “I almost bought every copy in Manhattan”.
Dog Town Bites: a luscious display of treats for dogs and their people
Many of the guests at the party also came prepared to sell their many puppy luxury items. The owner of Rex
and the City was there, promoting her website which features top designers for doggie couture clothing and accessories. Additionally,
the developer of Dogs Are People Too set up an area featuring her latest designs, including puppy scarves and hats and even
yarmulkes.
As the night wore on and the treats grew thin, the partied out pups became pooped and began to bark their
goodbyes to their fellow friends, each armed with a complimentary doggie bag filled with treats and healthful pet supplies.
