Dog Show Report - 3 A CORNUCOPIA OF THANKS, MORE PIX, AND WHAT ABOUT PEE WEE? |
 |
 |
 |
| Thanks to everyone who came out last Sunday to help make the 1st
Annual Marine Park Dog Show and Costume Parade a woof-worthy, tail-wagging occasion.
Much of the credit goes to Nature Center Coordinator Kristy Di Cario for convincing us
that a Halloween event would be a fun thing to do. We expanded on Kristy's idea and used the opportunity to do fundraising
for Animal Care & Control of NYC -- not to take credit for that, but to note that the Parks Department has new rules that
bar Parks employees from actively raising money, even for nonprofit organizations, on Park grounds.
Front and center and making events along Fillmore Avenue go
smoothly, entertainingly, all too quickly were our gracious emcee, Beth Joy Knutsen, and her close companion, Bella, part
terrier and all starlet. On this very gusty day, Beth seemed to gather us all together into one happy, lively circle. Wind?
What wind?
The three judges -- Head Urban Park Ranger Anthony Prastaro, artist Amber Alvarez, and Woof
Bites, Inc. founder Devorah Fong -- had some tough choices to make but did so without stepping on any paws.
The proceeds from the raffle tickets sold by MarineParkDogs.com volunteers prior to the event
and on Sunday totaled over $500. Reps from Animal Care & Control also sold tickets, and we're awaiting word from
ACC on how much they raised. Thanks to Yola, Jeannie, Liz, Melissa, Helene, Harley, Claire, Steve, and the Nature Center volunteers
who sold tickets. |
 |
 |
 |
| Judges Urban Park Ranger Anthony Prastaro, Devorah Fong, and Amber Alvarez determine who's
top dog. | |
 |
| ACC and volunteers from North Shore Animal League brought cats and
dogs for adoption via their pet-mobile. A few critters were adopted -- one of which, a husky-mix puppy, was given a home by
the Barone family. Sebastian Barone is one of the owners of Best Mail & Copy Center (Avenue R), who printed our raffle
tickets and flyers free-of-charge.
The Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals was on hand to provide low-cost microchipping. We're glad
to report that about 15 pooches received chips.
We gave out more than 75 Halloween gift bags with samples and coupons from Bargain Bow-Wow,
Petco, and Petland Discounts. Frisbees were provided by Best Mail & Copy Center.
The owners of the contest-winning pooches received long-sleeve orange Jerzees sweatshirts declaring
"My Dog's a Winner!" The shirts -- with stylish black lettering -- were generously donated by Alan Bellone
of A Stitch Above. |
 |
 |
 |
| The following businesses and individuals donated prizes for the
raffle drawing, services, or their time to the event. You can see a full list, including contact information in our archive under Special Events.
Amber Alvarez (Show judge), Claire Angelica, A Stitch Above. Bargain Bow-Wow, Best Mail &
Copy Center, Buckley's Restaurant, Devorah Fong (Show judge), Gentle Touch Dog & Cat Grooming, Gilbert the Magician
and Red the Wonder Dog, Gloria's Dog Beauty Salon, J & R Wholesale Balloon, Kings Plaza Diner-Restaurant, Beth Joy Knutsen (Show emcee), Marine Park Computers, Michael's Pastry Shop, Morris Discount, Natural Balance
Massage & Wellness Center, Noah's Ark Veterinary Practice, Nora's Park Bench Cafe, Petco, Petland Discounts, Suzanne's
Corner Cafe & Deli, and Thunderbird Tepee.
We'd also like to thank the ACC and Nature Center volunteers who sold raffle tickets, all of
the Parks Department personnel who made the event happen, including Ranger Anne and Ranger Stephanie, who came up with the
brilliant idea to have the dogs parade from the Nature Center to Fillmore Avenue.
And what about Pee Wee? Alas, although scheduled to appear, the Brooklyn Cyclones' baby seagull
mascot was unable to make it, much to the disappointment of fans not to mention the gulls of Gerritsen Creek, who'd waited
all week for a glimpse of their hero. |

WOW!! What more can I say... but WOW! What an amazing experience and our very first at that! Stray from the Heart has never
walked in the parade before, and can I just say it was quite the spectacle. New York Tails Magazine (pick up your copy today at your favorite pet place) invited us to join them in a journey through the fantastic, and might
I say if you have never been out to the Halloween Parade in New York City, well.. it's a sight to behold to say the least!
We had a fantastic banner (thanks Ila) just picked up that day for our events and it was easy to see our happy logo doggie
coming from a distance. We also had a terrific group of volunteers come to walk with us holding signs and wearing costmes,
including a couple of our furry friends all dressed up for the spookiest of holidays. I guess they felt bad about missing
out on the Howl-O-Ween Ball, so they wanted to get all gussied up for a night of their own.
Thanks so much to Sheila, Joe, Ila (AKA Chewy), Sofya, Monika, Mary and "Frovis", Lisa, Love, Brian & Quinn-Doo. A
special thanks to Sophia and Mocha (AKA Skunky) for dressing up in thier finest and coming out to wag their tails for the
cameras and dodge that never ending sea of legs! Thanks all of you for hanging out afterwards and mixing and mingling. After
all that walking it was nice to sit and chat (when the ringing in the ears stopped, at least) for a while!
Thanks also go to New York Tails Magazine for just being so awesome and really caring about all the animals in New York (and out)!
If you missed it, well at least we have photos... get ready now for next year!

BY AMY SACKS DAILY NEWS WRITER
|

Halloween is lurking
just around the corner, and this year the city is boasting a lineup of parades and bashes meant for masquerading four-legged
furry friends like never before.
"It's a way to show the incredible bond between humans and our animals," said upper West Sider Karen Biehl, whose Chihuahua
Eli will compete in several events dressed as Tinkerbell and Liberace, among other costumes, hand-stitched by local doggie
costume designer Ada Nieves (www.pupcakestudio.com).
But for Biehl, 43, and her 2-year-old adopted dog, it's also about garnering votes. The duo is among the finalists - the
only ones from N.Y.C. - in a national contest to be among the new faces on the 2007 Milk-Bone dog biscuit box.
At 4 pounds, 8 ounces, Eli is the tiniest pooch competing against dogs of 20 pounds or less.
"He may be the smallest one, but I think he has the biggest spirit," Biehl said, of her bitty-sweet pup who she saved while
he was being bounded from home to home.
Voters can cast their ballot every day through Nov. 6 at http://milkbone.promolot.com.
Dressing a dog in drag can be a hoot, but animal experts warn that not every pet is game for the charade. And the ASPCA
also advises to keep pets away from chocolate and alcohol, which can be fatal in dogs, along with those holiday hazards: electric
cords, aluminum foil and those discarded candy wrappers.
Here's a roundup of some paw-ticularly pet-friendly upcoming, Halloween events:
Today, at 2 p.m., Animal Haven's new SoHo adoption center will host the first annual Doggie Drag 2006, at 403 Broome St.,
in Manhattan, where pets and their guardians can vie to win prizes in owner/pet look-alike, celebrity look-alike and most
creative categories. For info go to www.animalhavenshelter.org.
Also today, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., adopt a new best friend at the N.Y.C. Animal Care & Control Brooklyn shelter's
Barktoberfest, featuring low-cost microchipping, raffles and Q104.3's deejay Maria Milito. The event takes place at 2336 Linden
Blvd. For more info, go to www.nycacc.org.
Tomorrow, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the 2nd Annual Times Square Dog Day Masquerade invites hounds to dress in drag that evokes
the essence of the world's liveliest crossroad. Visit www.timessquarenyc.org.
On Wednesday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Couches for Canines Costume Contest will benefit N.Y.C.'s Animal Care & Control
shelters. At Montauk Sofa, 51 Mercer St. Call (312) 432-9357.
Today and tomorrow, and next weekend, lovers of exotic animals can head to the Bronx Zoo's double-weekend holiday celebration
featuring a costume parade and more. For info go to www.bronxzoo.com.
Oct. 28 and 29 only, go batty at the Boo at the Zoo Halloween festivities at the Queens, Central Park and Prospect Park
Zoos, or party with eerie sea creatures at the New York Aquarium's Sea Monsters Weekend Halloween celebration (www.wcs.org).
Next Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., celebrate with your pooch and rescued animals at Loving Touch's Halloween Canine
Costume Contest. The event, to be held at the North Presbyterian Church, 25-33 154th St., Flushing, Queens, also features
a flea market. For info go to http://bemikitties.com/lti.
On Sunday, Oct. 29, from noon to 3 p.m., the 1st Annual Marine Park Dog Show and Costume Parade will feature Brooklyn's
finest canines in costume, plus dozens of adoptable animals and low-cost microchipping. It's all taking place at the Terrace
at Salt Marsh Nature Center on 3302 Avenue U. www.marineparkdogs.com.
Monday, Oct. 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Animal Fair Magazine will hold its 6th Annual Canine Comedy Halloween Pet Costume
Party featuring celebrity judges at Gotham Comedy Club at 208 W. 23rd St.
Holiday gone to the dogs
Three of the premiere events scheduled for you and your pets' Halloween celebrations could be the following. For sure they'll
bring smiles and laughter to the Big Boo and Bark holiday:
On Tuesday, Oct. 31, the granddaddy of all parades, the 33rd Annual New York's
Village Halloween Parade will feature the first-ever float to honor the pets of New York. For more information, go to www.BellaStarletDog.com.
Next Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m., the 16th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in the East Village, the city's
oldest, largest and most outlandish Halloween bash, especially for pups, is definitely a must-see (www.firstrunfriends.org).
Tomorrow, the Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festival in Union Square Park will feature gorgeous homeless animals,
plus animal experts and low-cost microchipping. For info, go to www.animalalliancenyc.org.

Dear Beth,
As 2006 draws to a close, here in NYC we have a lot to
celebrate in terms of progress toward our goal of creating a no-kill NYC. Year Two of the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project in NYC
is winding down with impressive results, as many Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) have exceeded their adoption
goals for the year. We are eager to begin our third year of the Maddie's project in January 2007, and want to express our
deep appreciation to Maddie's Fund for its continued belief in, and support of, our programs in NYC.
This year we saw an important advance in NYC's spay/neuter
efforts, when non-profit veterinary clinics at four APOs -- the ASPCA, Animal Care & Control, Bide-A-Wee, and the Humane
Society of New York -- joined the Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project NYC. These organizations greatly enhance our current roster
of veterinarians -- members of the Veterinary Medical Association of NYC -- who are providing low-cost spays and neuters for
pets of NYC residents who have a Medicaid card.
We also cannot end the year without expressing once again our appreciation to the ASPCA, an Alliance founding member and
a crucial supporter of the Alliance's programs. And to each and every Alliance member group, small and large -- and every
veterinarian, every volunteer, every person who donated funds or supplies to the Alliance's efforts, and perhaps most of all,
to those wonderful people who adopted a furry little New Yorker this year -- THANK YOU from the animals whose lives are being
saved as a result of your caring and generosity.
Best wishes to all for a humane holiday and new year.

Halloween Events Raise Funds and Awareness for NYC's Animals
A fundraising costume event on Halloween eve and a first-time appearance
in NYC's famous Halloween Parade gave NYC's homeless animals exceptional exposure this year.

Maddie spread the adoption message to crowds of spectators
at this year's Halloween Parade in NYC's Greenwich Village. |
Halloween night, a very special first-ever float dedicated to NYC's
homeless animals made its debut in the heavily attended Halloween Parade in New York's Greenwich Village. As thousands of
revelers and spectators looked on, the float celebrating NYC's homeless animals and rescue groups — sponsored by New
York Tails and its publisher, Diane West — wound its way through the crowded parade route, followed by banner-carrying
representatives from the Mayor's Alliance and numerous animal shelters and rescue groups.
And who got the seat of honor on the float? Maddie, the Maddie's Fund
mascot! From her berth atop the float, Maddie wiggled and waved to the delight of hundreds of thousands of well-wishers. Thanks
to Diane and New York Tails for inviting the Mayor's Alliance and Maddie to join in the celebration for NYC's animals!

Angela Lansbury, Harry Hamlin, Lisa Rinna, David Hyde Pierce,
Jo Anne Worley, Jerry Mathers, Jane Carr, John Lloyd Young, Maureen McGovern, Cheyenne Jackson, Michael Cerveri, Debra
Monk, and Karen Ziemba and many more Broadway Stars To Appear In Special Benefit For New York City Animal Shelters And Adoption
Agencies
Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore will host the ninth annual BROADWAY BARKS!, a star-studded dog and
cat adopt-a-thon benefiting New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies. The event, produced by Broadway Care/Equity
Fights AIDS and sponsored by the ASPCA with additional sponsorship by the New York Times, Pedigree, and RCA Small Wonder will
take place on Saturday, July 14th in Shubert Alley (located between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue).
The festivities begin at 3:30 p.m.; celebrity presentations of pets from citywide animal shelters will take place between
5:30 and 6:30 p.m. (In the event of rain, BROADWAY BARKS 9! will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 28 from 3:30p.m. - 6:30p.m.)
Back
by "pawpular" demand, BROADWAY BARKS 9! will help many of New York City's shelter animals find permanent homes by informing
New Yorkers about the plight of the thousands of "homeless" dogs and cats in the metropolitan area. Last year's BROADWAY BARKS!
attracted an audience of more than 6,000 theater fans, pet owners, and animal lovers, and featured the participation of more
than 24 animal shelters from the New York City area.
"In 2006, for the first time in New York City's history, the euthanasia
rate for dogs and cats in the city's Animal Care & Control shelters fell below 50%. A total of 20, 581 animals were placed
into homes. 9,313 were adopted; 9,937 were transferred for eventual adoption to local shelters and rescue groups; and 1,331
were returned to their owners," said Moore.
"This milestone means we are saving more than half of the dogs and cats
in our city shelters," said Ed Sayres, president & CEO of the ASPCA. "We are are proud that New York City's efforts to
save the lives of adoptable animals has reached this important benchmark."
Peters, who adopted her dogs, Kramer and
Stella, from the ASPCA and AC&C, adds, "It's bringing us closer to the day when we will no longer have to euthanize any
healthy and treatable homeless cats and dogs because of a lack of space. As a community, we are most effective in helping
animals when we pool our strengths to achieve what is, after all, a shared goal -- the elevation and continued welfare of
animals in our society."
A galaxy of Broadway stars will join Peters and Moore for this special benefit, presenting
the animals for adoption. Celebrity presenters include Angela Lansbury (Deuce); Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna (Chicago); David
Hyde Pierce, Jason Danieley, Michael McCormick, Debra Monk, and Karen Ziemba (Curtains); Jerry Mathers and Paul Vogt (Hairspray),
Priscilla Lopez and Mandy Gonzalez (In the Heights); Cheyenne Jackson and Kerry Butler (Xanadu); Michael Cerveris (LoveMusik);
Jo Anne Worley, John Glover, Beth Leavel, Gerry Vichi and Patrick Wetzel (The Drowsy Chaperone); Ashley Brown, Jane Carr,
Daniel Jenkins, and Gavin Lee (Mary Poppins); John McMartin and Maureen Moore (Grey Gardens); Michael Berresse (A Chorus Line);
John Earl Jelks (Radio Golf); Michael Mulheren (Deuce); J. Robert Spencer and John Lloyd Young (Jersey Boys); Orfeh and Andy
Karl (Legally Blonde); David Hibbard and Martin Moran (Spamalot); Sebastian Arcelus, Jayne Houdyshell, and Kendra Kassebaum
(Wicked); Stephanie J. Block; Maureen McGovern; and many more.
BROADWAY BARKS 9! will feature a sampling of potential
pets from several New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for Paws, Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Angelical
Cat, Animal Haven, ASPCA, AC&C, BARC, Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters, Humane Society of New York, Husky
House, Kitty Kind, Long Island Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue,
NYC Siamese Rescue, Pet-I-Care, PLUTO, Russell Refuge, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Stray from the Heart, and
Tigger Foundation. Representatives from these organizations will be on hand to offer educational information on spaying and
neutering.
BROADWAY BARKS 9! will also feature an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia. Additional auction
merchandise will be available via the Internet by visiting www.eBay.com. Proceeds from the auction and other donations received during the day will benefit the shelters and organizations attending
BROADWAY BARKS 9!
We look forward to seeing you at BROADWAY BARKS Saturday, July 14th!
Visit us again at www.BroadwayBarks.com! We always love to hear from you.

It
was very much publicized that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have drawn an enormous amount of attention as they lined up
support among high-profile donors in Hollywood.
Yet, quietly, unassumingly, Peaches received a celebrity endorsement of her own. The Peaches For Prez Campaign announced that
Bella Starlet Dog has given her paw of approval to Peaches for president.
A
campaign spokes-people-person said, "Unlike the multi-million dollar dinners and cocktail receptions Clinton and Obama garner with Hollywood supporters,
obviously a mission to raise as much money as possible, Peaches seeks to only raise an awareness of her candidacy and her
message."
In
endorsing the Peaches for Prez Campaign, Bella Starlet barked, ""With my paw to my heart, it is evident Peaches can show all
of the voters that being President just takes unconditional love for your fellow countrydogs! Hugs and woofs to all of my
friends and fans."
When
asked for a statement, Peaches arfed. "It is with great honor that I graciously accept Bella Starlet's endorsement. Rather
than a cocktail reception, I happy to receive a wagging tail reception from a star such as Bella Starlet."
