Amateur radio or Ham Radio as it is commonly known is a very useful and interesting hobby, also one that you can get a lot of personal satisfaction from.
A hobby that has many different modes, so most everyone can find one or more which they will surely enjoy for a lifetime. CW, Phone, digital modes, such as slow scan TV and packet, just to mention a few.
Ham operators are also called upon for  communications during various emergency situations, such as extended power outages, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Most operators have a backup power supply, so during any type of emergency, thier stations will remain on the air, even when telephone communication is impossible.
Aside from the emergency part they also ragchew with other hams, with all modes, contests and receiving certificates for working all states, countries, counties, Islands, special event stations and etc.
