The people of ancient Egypt settled in a land known as the Nile River Valley.  Here, the Nile River's dependable floods produced a dark, fertile layer of mud which covered their farmlands called kemet.  Once the Egyptians mastered the practice of farming, their civilization grew rapidly and they produced incredible advancements in the areas of government, religion, architecture and science.  After a period of thousands of years which saw the establishment of the Old Kingdom (2600 - 2300 B.C.), the Middle Kingdom (2050 - 1670 B.C.) and the New Kingdom (1550 - 1080 B.C.), Egypt began to decline in power as poor leadership from their Pharaohs and invasions from other lands ended Egypt's domanice as a major empire.
