The founding of the city of Rome sometime around the year 509 B.C. marked the beginning of a great civilization which would come to rule the entire region of the Mediterranean Sea as well as much of Northern Europe.  These great people created a culture unlike the world had ever seen as their accomplishments are still admired around the world today.
