The Phoenicians were a great sea power who established colonies all along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.  They generated their wealth through a trading network that was centered in the colonies of Tyre and Carthage.  They also developed a much simpler writing system that had only 22 symbols.  This writing system was modified by the Greeks and Romans and eventually would be the basis for our writing system today.  One of the main products of the Phoenicians was their purple dye which was extracted from the snails along the shores of Tyre which produced a rich purple dye.  This dye was used in clothing material and was very expensive to purchase which meant that only the rich could afford the cloth - hence the establishment of purple as the color of royalty!!
