The term Renaissance means rebirth and took place in Europe from around 1350-1550.  This time followed the Middle Ages and was a time where human achievements were celebrated and people became much more interested in the secular world around them rather than just focusing on their religious beliefs.  The Italian city-states such as Florence, Siena and Venice became the center for this movement as Europe moved out of the Dark Ages and eventually into the Enlighenment.
