On Sunday we flew from Jo'burg to Livingstone, Zambia. Our primary goal for the trip to Zambia was to see Victoria Falls. .Follow the link to find out more about Victoria Falls (aka Mosi-oa-Tunya - "the smoke that thunders"). We arrived in the afternoon and immdiately went to the place where we were staying, the Ngolide Lodge. This, by the way, was the only time on our trip that we slept under mosquito netting.
We began our visit of the falls on Monday and you will find a selection of pictures from our group showing the falls. It was unfortunate that we were visiting at the end of the dry season in a period of drought that has lasted several years. The amount of water gong over the falls was therefore far less than normal. The Wikipedia article on the falls has several pictures that shows what things look like under more normal circumstances.
After our visit to the falls Dennis and Barbara took a helicopter ride to get the big picture. I have included a couple of pictures from their ride although neither Rob nor I saw these views for ourselves. In the evening we had a sunset cruise on the Zambesi River. It was very lovely and very romantic. We saw a number of hippos in the river and as it neared sunset we were given a real treat. A small herd of elephant came down to the river's edge and then proceeded to cross the river. During part of their passage all anyone could see were their trunks poking out of the water like snorkels.
We flew back to Johannesburg on Tuesday and immediately proceeded to a luxurious hotel in Pretoria where we spent the night in anticipation of our journey to Cape Town by train.
