Dunaway Surname

Generation No. 1

1. DERBY DUNAWAY, b. Abt 1674 in VA; m. MARY STONEHAM, October 15, 1705. She died Abt. 1729 in Lancaster, VA and was the daughter of HENRY STONEHAM of Lancaster, VA.

More on DERBY DUNAWAY:

I took a day trip to Lancaster County last week in search of the ancestral home -- Derby Dunaway's Greenfield. 'Dunaways of Virginia' details that Derby bought this property in 1697. The Dunaway family owned it until Thomas S. Dunaway sold it in 1868.

I got a lead that a local farmer named Gene Forrester owned the land now. I phoned him and found out that he actually lives on an adjacent property. The actual owner, a Mrs. Chilton, died a couple years ago and donated it to the Virginia Dept. of Forestry.

However, Mr. Forrester was quite familiar with 'Greenfield' and volunteered to take us to the site. It is in upper Lancaster County, just a couple miles south of the Richmond County line. We took a dirt road from Lara Road about 1/2 mile west. Form there, we followed the remnants of an old road and trekked back into the woods about 1/4 mile north to the site.

Sadly, the home was torn down in 1983. Mr. Forrester remembered it quite well, and he told me that flooring timbers had been donated to Colonial Williamsburg. I have emailed their archives department to see if they can confirm that.

Not much is left of the home site, but my wife did manage to find some handmade bricks (that we brought back as souvenirs). The Dunaway family donated the land for the Lebanon Baptist Church in 1841, which sets about 1/2 mile south of Greenfield. The bricks for that church were made from Greenfield clay.

We also found a 'Dunaway Lane' which lies just over the Richmond County line, about 2 miles north of Greenfield. I haven't found out the history behind that yet.
