Astrology has been around a long time (the earliest surviving astrological inscriptions date back to 3000
BC) so it has been saddled with a lot of archaic terms. Astrologers routinely speak of "rulers,"
"houses," and the like, as if knighthood were still in flower.
Attempts have been made to modernize the terminology but the reforms never caught on.
The void-of-course Moon is a perfect example.
“Void-of-course” is an archaic term that basically
means "peregrine," or wandering footloose.
The Moon spends about 2 1/2 days in each astrological sign,
during which time it makes "aspects" (connections) to the planets. When it reaches a point where it can't make any more
aspects until it enters the next sign, the Moon is said to be "void-of-course." This happens about three times a week
and the length of time that it's "void" is variable – it can be measured in minutes, hours, and sometimes days.
For whatever reason, these void periods are usually times when activities produce unexpected results
or don't work out as intended. People often act "out of character" and first impressions are misleading.
Major purchases are best postponed during these intervals but not necessarily because a product
will be defective (although that often happens). Sometimes, you might simply find that the item was on sale elsewhere
or available at a lower price.
These are considered risky times to begin an important venture. In the 20th Century, every
presidential candidate officially nominated under a void Moon ended up losing the general election.
Avoid
beginning a journey while the Moon is void-of-course. The 9/11 attacks took place while the Moon was void-of-course.
The Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage during a void-of-course Moon. But these are extreme examples -- usually
the effect of a void Moon results in flight delays, lost luggage, and the like.
There is a flip side to a void-of-course
Moon – it actually favors certain activities. Psychoanalysis, meditation, and hypnosis are
some things that thrive when the Moon is void-of-course.
This is also a good time to break a bad habit or to begin a diet.
It seems we are less inhibited when the Moon is void-of-course – and less constrained by ingrained behavior.
Needless to say, this is also a favorable time to let your hair down or to “let it all hang out.”
Creativity also seems to flourish when the Moon is void-of-course.
The void-of-course Moon brings inconvenience more often than it brings
catastrophes. But this is an unpredictable time when we can’t take anything for granted. So
treat these intervals like a recess from reality because, when all is said and done, that's what they are.
