April 21, 2009 The
New School Forum on Writing for Children New York, New York
|
|
I will be the featured speaker at
The New School Forum on Writing for Children. Hosted by Deborah Brodie, editor and coordinator of the Forum on Writing for Children, and sponsored by The New School Writing Program, I will be giving a lecture on the basics of juvenile publishing contracts -- terms, concepts and typical negotiation issues
for authors and publishers. The event will take place from 6:30 pm to 7:15 pm, at Alvin Johnson/J. M. Kaplan Hall, 66
West 12th Street, room 510. The event is free to all New School students, faculty, staff, and alumni with ID.
The cost to the general public is $5.
Details can be found at The New School events site.
I am very much looking forward to giving this lecture. The Forum on Writing for Children hosts several speakers
each semester. Usually, only well-known childrens writers, such as Jane Yolen, give solo lectures. Business people
from the publishing industry (agents and editors) usually give panel discussions. To the best of my knowledge, I will be the first solo lecturer from the business side of the industry.
If you
are at all interested in childrens publishing, or want to learn more about publishing contracts, please come to the event.

7:30
p.m.-11:00 p.m. -- I was the featured guest speaker at this monthly meeting of Bergen County New Jersey's science fiction
fan group. My talk was primarily about my career and the publishing industry in general, but covered a wide range of topics,
including film rights, the foreign markets for sff, and ATLANTA NIGHTS. This is a terrifically involved group of fans,
and I highly recommend it for area fans seeking like-minded friends. Directions, mass transit, and other information appear

April 28, 2005 The Illinois State Bar Association
and SFWA Continuing Professional Education Seminar: Publishing Contracts For New Authors and New Publishers Hotel
Allegro, 171 W. Randolph, Chicago, Illinois
|

|
| SFWA Link |
|
9:00
a.m.-5:00 p.m. -- A special joint Continuing Professional Education Program co-sponsored by the Intellectual Property Law
Section of the Illinois State Bar Association. The morning program was a potpourri of contract topics with speakers provided
by the ISBA, including Jeffrey Liss, who also is a member of the SFWA Contracts Committee. The afternoon program was a soup-to-nuts
analysis of a typical publishing contract, section by section, conducted by attorney Charles Petit and myself. The program
was aimed at lawyers who don't do this sort of thing very often and SF authors who don't do it often enough (and who may not
be able to afford a lawyer but need to know how to recognize the issues). We hope to repeat this seminar in other locations. | | | | | |
