April 24,1945
All of these pictures, a few of which were very widely publicized, were all taken from the boat deck of
the USS Hayter DE212, by the ships photographer on this very sad and disheartening day. The Hayter rescued 66 of the USS Frederick
C. Davis DE 136 survivors and made a very big effort with 12 others. We could not save them, a few came aboard dead and
a few died aboard the Hayter, after many hours of attempted resuscitation. (The Picture "Burial at Sea" shows yours truly
at the back of the picture, with the hat on the back of my head. I never did accept squaring that hat. ) I meant no disrespect
for those being buried. This is one day in my life that I will remember for as long as I live.
No captions needed on the first 6 pictures.
