Soon after
emigrating from Lancaster County, PA in 1775, John Clemson built Clemsonville.
"The old
manor-house is a fine specimen of substantial stone architecture. Its walls are fully three feet
in thickness and although the structure is approaching its hundredth year, it seems, in its strength and solidity, likely to
last another hundred years. Like the old-time mansion-houses, its apartments are roomy and sturdily
embellished.
A spirit
of broad hospitality dwells within its ample recesses, and good
cheer is mutely heralded
in all its surroundings."
