The official name of this Royersford area group is The Montgomery County Ancient Order of Hibernians
(AOH) Division 3 "Irish Brigade - 116 PVI". A lot can be said about the name and their symbol.
The moniker "Irish Brigade - 116 PVI" is a reference
back in Montgomery County's history when during the Civil War Irish American volunteers from the Montgomery county area formed
an infantry unit. These Irish American recruits manned the 116th Pennsylvania Voluntary Infantry (PVI). The 116 PVI was a
component of the Union's Irish Brigade. The Irish Brigade became a famous Union combat unit during the American Civil War
due to its long combat record, high mortality rate and ethnic composition. The military symbol worn by the Irish Brigade was
a red shamrock. Therefore Division 3's symbol is also a red shamrock.
In the past years we've held many family and
charitable activities. Some ofthese events were a family night out at the Reading Phillies; enrolling in Penn DOT's Adopt-a-Highway
program (AOH Div 3 now cares for a section of Rt 113 near Trappe); we've held a fundraiser for the World Trade Center (WTC)
victims and donating money to other charitable causes. Also, we enjoy the Irish festivals that we've been involved with. It
is nice to get out and listen to the live Irish Music."
