CHRISTIAN FORMATION

School Days! School Days! Good ole’ Sunday School Days!-- Sunday School will began on September 21st after the 9:00 AM service. Our Sunday School has four classes serving preschool children (age 3) through the eighth grade. Our dedicated group of volunteer teachers is looking forward to helping your child grow in God’s love this year. Registration forms are available in the Parish Hall.

Interested in helping out? We are looking for Sunday School volunteers who can help expand our teaching staff. You can take on a class of your own, teach a few Sundays a month, serve as a trained, on-call substitute for emergencies or just be a special guest in a class from time to time. High school-age volunteers are welcome. Contact Robette McLellan for more information at edwardmcl@verizon.net.

“Dietrich Bonhoeffer: His Witness and Legacy”--a series of lectures and discussion by Victoria J. Barnett, General Editor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, English Edition/Director of Church Relations, USHMM. The series will take place at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1132 N. Ivanhoe St., Arlington, VA 22205 in the Parish Hall on the dates and times below:

Wednesday, October 1, 7:30 p.m: “Dietrich Bonhoeffer and His Times”. An overview of Bonhoeffer’s historical context and the way in which it shaped his life, theology, and his movement into the German resistance.

Sunday, October 5, 3:00 p.m.: showing of “Bonhoeffer” (Journey films, 2003) and discussion.

Wednesday, October 8, 7:30 p.m: “Bonhoeffer the Pastor”. In the darkest days of the resistance, Bonhoeffer wrote a friend that if he knew he had only days to live, he would “preach more often.” We’ll discuss how Borthoeffer’s understanding of his pastoral role shaped his work with his students, sustained him through the most difficult decisions, and is evident in many of his writings, from sermons to the prison letters.

Wednesday, October 22, 7:30 p.m: “Bonhoeffer the Prophet”. Bonhoeffer was one of the earliest and most outspoken critics of his church’s compromises with National Socialism. This made him an outsider in his own church, even after 1945, yet it has led Christians throughout the world - particularly those struggling with oppression and violence — to identify with his work. We’ll discuss how he himself wrestled with the role of “prophet” and how we can understand his work in that light today.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sharon Nachman, Altar Guild Chair of VA ECW writes:-- “Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Altar Guild of the Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of Virginia is asking for your help. This will be a unified effort and an opportunity to prove what God can do through us.

Over a year ago, the majority membership of eleven churches in our Diocese voted to leave the Episcopal Church. Episcopalians who were members of four of those churches have reconstituted (Epiphany, Oak Hill; Falls Church, Falls Church; St. Margaret’s, Woodbridge; St. Stephen’s, Heathsville), and their member ships are growing even through they are worshiping in borrowed spaces. Everything that they need for a worship service must be set up, taken down, moved and stored each week. These congregations have very little, if anything, in the way of vestments, hymnals, prayer books, or sacristy supplies --the basic items for worship services that we take for granted every week. The sacristy supplies of one of the reconstituted churches consist of four purficators and a chalice. The ECW of the Diocese of Virginia is accepting donations to give each reconstituted church a “Sacristy in a Box” that will include basic (new) items for setting an altar. Our goal is to present all four boxes to these churches at the ECW Annual meeting October 21, 2008.

Please contact Sharon Nachman, Altar Guild Chair for ECW (sharonsn@aol.com) if you have any questions.

The phones are either recycled and used for emergency service for women who are being threatened or harassed, or they are turned into Shelter Alliance which recycles components of the phones and pays the shelters for each phone that is turned in. Either way, the women and shelters benefit and you can clear out some junk from your home! Please put the cell phones in the box at the back of the Church. Any questions, call Caroline Haynes.
