Hello Bailey's community,

Notes from Principal's Coffee on 2/19/08 - thanks to Larry Lefbom for recording what was discussed.

Mr. McClain reviewed the attached (something similar was reviewed at the February PTA meeting).

Points were raised about the skills gained by previous drama program: goalsetting, play development process, elements of acting/theater and behind the scenes roles. Discussion ensued about importance of play to parents/community/children. Back and forth about old vs. new and clarification of the road ahead. We will participate in the Arena Stage Playwriting competition wherein plays are submitted in the mid-March timeframe. We will pick ~2 plays from this competition (or take the winners, I’m not sure) for Bailey’s 4th/5th graders to audition, produce and present in the April/early May timeframe. While not as large as past productions, this allows others to participate (i.e. writers).

What’s up with TV news? A: Want more integration between technology and classroom goals. At same time, the teacher that ran the news is on a one year sabbatical (Mr. Leavitt). Some teachers wanted to do the news, others didn’t. Also, students that aren’t immersed in technology at home were falling even further behind and we wanted to shift some resources towards them. Also saw that the 15 minutes per day for watching the news was a burden on every teacher at the school and many students weren’t listening anyway unless they were in that day’s production. Other technology integration with home room teachers is taking place.

Distance learning is becoming more $ and it appears the students learn more from hands on learning. As distance learning passes field trips in expense, it seems a better use of our resources for the better learning environment afforded by field trips. But we’ll continue some distance learning. I was losing attention here, so I probably don’t have this part exactly right.

Some questions around drama focus and importance. Mr. McClain noted the bottom up review of our drama program and emphasizing it’s integration with class curriculum is evidence that drama is very important at Bailey’s. Just continuing existing programs without thinking about them would be evidence that nobody cares.

Mr. McClain will get out a survey with goal of helping us move forward and bring in those voices unable to make the PTA meeting or coffee. Life is about evolving and we’ll be taking things one step at a time.

Bailey's teachers Lynn Riggs and Betsy Walter were interviewed on the August 16th edition of The News Hour with Jim Lehrer about how some of the country's best teachers are dealing with the No Child Left Behind law. Dear Bailey's Families,

On behalf of the Bailey's Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and it's officers, WELCOME! to Bailey's.

One of the most unique and outstanding characteristics of our school, is the Bailey's community which is composed of dedicated teachers, talented students, and active parent volunteers.

I encourage you to volunteer either in the classroom or at any events throughout the year.

At Bailey's, you can take an active role in your child's education by getting involved through volunteering. There are a number of volunteer opportunities in your child's classroom. Please ask your child's teacher how you can help. If you would rather volunteer outside the classroom, the PTA offers various ways to be part of our volunteer community.

You may want to consider volunteering for one of our PTA committees such as the Garden Team, Ways and Means, Family Fun Nights, Odyssey of the Mind and many other great events.

If you need more information, you can contact me at arczynski@cox.net or call 703-658-4562.

The PTA commits to offering our children a rewarding learning environment. We also welcome any ideas you many have to improve our community. We are always looking for new ways to be an effective organization.

Hopefully you will become a member of our PTA and attend our monthly PTA meetings which are held on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm in the School Library. Membership forms are included in the packet of information.

Other events the PTA is planning this year include Bingo Night, Movie Night, the Square 1 Art Program, Silent Auction and many more community events that will help bridge the friendships of our teachers, students and parents. I'm looking forward to another wonderful and exciting new year.

Please join us in our effort to support the education of our children.

Helping hands is one of the organizations within the PTA that tries to extend a hand to the people in the Bailey's Elementary School local community. The hand is a welcoming hand, a hand of giving and of communication. We do so with the intention of creating links of support, increased social bonds and education.

Courtyard is an ongoing project of the school's PTA. The courtyard is completely organized, funded, and maintained by parent, teacher and community volunteers and was designed by Bailey's parent Steve Elkinton.

Check Out the Latest on SLEEP
Start Later for Excellence in Education Proposal's web site, http://www.SLEEPinFairfax.org, provides information about the organization's efforts to get later start times at Fairfax County high schools and middle schools. The site contains information about the group and its mission, a fact sheet on adolescents and sleep, and a petition to sign for those supporting later start times at secondary schools.

SLEEP is a grassroots organization started by two Fairfax County parents concerned about the early start times of the county’s secondary schools. In 1998, a Fairfax County Public Schools Task Force studying school start times concluded that later start times would benefit adolescents and our community. There is a large body of research which supports the Task Force’s finding, saying that teenagers’ natural sleep patterns make it difficult for them to go to sleep and wake up early. Currently, however, most county high schools begin at 7:20 am. Buses begin picking up students at 5:45 am and adolescents are often going to school sleep-deprived.

This matter will soon touch on all of our children. Learn as much as possible about it! SLEEP's web site is a great place to start.
