Some Ghost Hunting & Paranormal Terms
Interviews- methods used to collect testimony and stories from witnesses, often compiled into a computer database
for further study. Some groups also research the history of a location in hopes of learning more about past events and individuals
associated with the site.
Lights-Out Method 0r Going Dark- Many ghost hunters prefer to conduct their investigations during
"peak" evening hours (midnight to 4 a.m.) when most paranormal activity is said to occur. This time period seems to have been
put forth in the 1970s and was supported by Lorraine Warren herself. Most paranormal groups favor
the ‘lights out’ or black-out conditions, theorizing that it’s easier to see a possible apparition in the
dark since it requires less energy to manifest. According to the theory, spirits/ghosts that attempt to manifest themselves
(become corporeal or material-visible) do so by drawing energy from all surrounding sources of both electric and magnetic
waves/frequencies. This is one of the reasons why paranormal groups utilize the Gauss (or Electromagnetic Frequency (EMF))
meter. By drawing these energies from surrounding sources, they are enabling themselves to be seen in this plane of existence.
A popular thought among ghost hunters is that any equipment that behaves erratically (temporary and inexplicable battery drains,
electronic units that shut down, flickering lights or other unexplainable anomalies) point to the presence of a spirit/ghost
that is attempting to materialize. Some have even explained that people who experience nausea or dizziness are being subsequently
affected by these manifesting spirits/ghosts due to the fact that our brain's synapses (all electrically based) are misfiring
and causing an equilibrium change that affects the individual's perception. Additionally, some paranormal investigators point
to a disturbance of their equipment by the presence of fluourescent or other types of lighting. Critics of the lights-out
method of investigation point to the lack of evidence regarding the apparition-occurrence-to-darkness ratio, indicating that,
historically, 80% of full-body apparitions have been witnessed during daylight hours. Daytime investigations, they claim,
will produce markedly better results since the video and photographic evidence will be much clearer and more concise for others
who scrutinize such "evidence". Some also experiment in wavelengths on the fringe of human vision including red and ultraviolet
light.

Hauntings- Paranormal disturbances
typically attributed to a remaining object in the area that the once living person had a connection with. Disturbances can
also be accredited to a message that the paranormal would like to pass on before moving on to the after life. Various
phenomena are reported including moving objects, strange noises, lights, cold spots, unpleasant smells, and the appearance
of manifestations or bright round lights that usually show up in photographs.
Orbs- The simplest and most common form of a spirit
in the paranormal hierarchy. In photography and video, orbs appear to be balls of light with an apparent size ranging from
a golfball to a basketball that can vary in color, but not shape. Orbs sometimes appear to be in motion, leaving a trail behind
them, called streamer.
Poltergiest- A German words that means "noisy or mischievous
ghost." A destructive spirit that has the ability to move objects. This phenomena is also associated with noises, rapping,
levitating and throwing of objects, as well as other physical manifestations. These events usually come on suddenly and end
just as fast. They can last for days, months or a few years.
Spirits- Paranormal apparitions that are self aware
of their surroundings and actions.
Vortex- A concentration of paranormal energy that
is said to be a doorway for spirits to enter and exit the living world
Ghost Hunt- Going to a place where
there have been no sightings of ghosts and trying to catch some on film (video and photos), sounds, eyewitnesses etc. (graveyards
are the number one place to start, churches, schools and other very old buildings.
Ghost Investigation- going to a known haunted place and recording
data (video, photos, audio, temperature), notes, interviews and other evidence to prove/disprove the haunting and to assist
the owners and the spirits in moving on and leaving the place if they want that. The assistance can be either you directly
assisting the owner with the situation or putting them in contact with experienced groups or individuals that will try to
resolve the situation. Your assistance can be something as simple as educating them on what is going on and their options.
Electronic Voice Phenomena - or EVP,is a mysterious event
in which human-sounding voices from an unknown source are heard on recording tape, in radio station noise and other electronic
media. Most often, EVPs have been captured on audiotape. The mysterious voices are not heard at the time of recording; it
is only when the tape is played back that the voices are heard. Sometimes amplification and noise filtering is required to
hear the voices.
FEAR CAGE: An area of localized high electromagnetic field (E.M.F.) that would make a person that
is highly sensitive to e.m.f. experience feelings of dizziness, hallucinations, paranoia, nausea, etc.
High E.M.F. can be caused by things such as circuit breakers, unshielded electrical
wires, etc. Older houses usually have unshielded or old electrical wiring. People are exposed to E.M.F. all the
time, but some people are more sensitive than others.
