DeWitt Clinton De Groat

DeWitt Clinton De Groat   DeWitt Clinton De Groat was my great great grandfather, and he was born on 06 Sep 1846 in Warwick, Orange Co., NY, and died on 05 Apr 1917 in Bloomfield, NJ.  He married first Mary Adeline Van Dunk, and they had 5 children.  After the death of Mary Adeline in 1908, he married Estella Williams and they had 8 children.   I begin the De Groat/De Groot Footprints with DeWitt Clinton because this is the ancestor where relatives born in his time knew him, and still lived in my time to talk about him.   Note:   Edward J. Lenik mentions DeWitt Clinton and his brother Richard in his book, "Indians In The Ramapos".  He says that they are recorded as  "Indians" in the 1875 New York State Census (See Chapter 9, page 69).

1	DeWitt Clinton's Parents
1	John De Groat born about 1796 in Bergen Co., NJ, and died Mar 15, 1878.  He married Margaret Jane Piggery born in Warwick, NY about 1800, and died before 1856.
1	Note for John De Groat: According to Roger Joslyn's report* on the Ramapough Mountain Indians, John is 3/4 Indian, and also married an Eliza Ann.  John was the father of 11 children. *RMI Founding Families (18th Century De Groat Organization) by Roger Joslyn *Source:  John, Margaret and all of DeWitt C.'s siblings except Martina born in 1861, are listed in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census Records living in Warwick, Orange Co., NY.  John's two brothers Peter and Richard with their families are also in this census.  The three brothers and their families are living in dwellings side by side to each other.

1	Steven De Groat born about 1832 in Orange Co., NY, and died after 1850 in Warwick, NY.
2	John De Groat born about 1834 in Warwick, NY, and died after 1880 in NY.  He married Betsy Jane, and they had 4 children.
3	Elizabeth De Groat born about 1836 in Warwick, NY, and died Aug 8, 1880 in Ringwood, NJ.   She married a Van Dunk.  His given name is not known yet.
4	Henry De Groat born about 1837 in Warwick, NY, and died about 1855 in Warwick, NY.
5	William De Groat born Oct. 1839 in Warwick, NY, and died after 1906 in Goshen, NY.  In 1863, William married Mariah/Maria Mc Ginness born 1841.  They had 8 children.
6	Margaret De Groat was born about 1843 in Warwick, Orange Co., NY, and died about 1876 in Monroe, NY.  At the time her spouse is unknow, but is said to have have 4 children.
7	George W. De Groat was born 1844 in Warwick, NY, and died after 1870 in W. Milford, NJ. He married Mary Peterson b. 1841.  They had 6 known children.
8	Richard De Groat was born Nov 27, 1845 in Warwick, NY, and died about 1917 in Ramsey, NJ.  He married Hannah "Anna" Louise De Freese.  They had about 8 children of which 3 were albinos, and several passed in infancy.
9	Martha Ellen De Groat was born about 1848 in Warwick, NY and died after 1855 in Warwick, NY.
10	Martina De Groat was born about 1861 in Warwick, NY, and is believed to have died around 1866.  I still have not found any record of a Martina anywhere.

1	Phoebe Jane De Groat Wilson Phoebe Jane De Groat was born about 1867 in New Jersey, and died about about 1921 in Passaic, NJ.  She was married to William Wilson born 08 Oct 1868 in Kentucky, and had 10 children.
2	Alice Amelia De Groat was born Nov 1871 in Pompton, Passaic, New Jersey, married William G. Milligan,  and had 6 children.  (William George, Jr., Arthur C, Morris, Russell, Kenneth and Vernon "Dib").
3	Mary Adeline De Groat was born on Jan 1876 in Monroe NY, and died on 02 Apr 1902 in Passaic, NJ.  Mary Adeline is the mother of my great grandfather Walter De Groat born about 1896 in Passaic, NJ, and died Jul 1944 in Newark, NJ.   Walter De Groat married Jennie Jackson b. 1903 in Passaic, NJ.    They had 6 children (Mary, Walter, Jr, Cora Helen, Reba Lottie, Louise, Alice and Ann).
4	John Thomas De Groat was born on 14 Jan 1878 in New Jersey, and died 30 Jul 1887 in Bloomfield, NJ.
5	James De Groat was b. 07 Mar 1880 in Lodi, NJ.  He married Mary Frances Milligan b. Jan 1876 in NJ.  Mary Frances was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Milligan.  They had eight children as of the 1930 US Federal Census Records.  (Arthru, Frances, Harrison, Ruben, Dorothy, Elmira and Raymond.

1	After the death of my great great grandmother Mary Adeline in 1881, DeWitt Clinton married a second time.  These are their children.

7	Gertrude De Groat b. Jan 1888 in Passaic, New Jersey
8	Martha De Groat born 1891 in Passaic, New Jersey
9	Cora De Groat born 1893 in Passaic, New Jersey
10	Rubin Thurlo De Groat born 1895 in Passaic, New Jersey.  He married Lulu.
11	Raymond Clinton De Groat born 1897 in Passaic, NJ.  He married Annie.
12	Milbert De Groat b. May 1899 in Passaic, New Jersey
13	Ida De Groat born 1905 in Passaic, New Jersey
