Mary Adeline Van Dunk was my great grandmother, and the first wife of DeWitt Clinton De Groat.  Her sojourn here on earth was only 31 years.   Then the Great Spirit brought her back home to reign with him, and to watch over all of us that she left behind, including all of us that she never got to know.

John Van Dunk was born 27 Jan 1802 in New York, and died on 22 Nov 1894 in Hewitt, NJ.  He married Maria "Mary" Cronk born about 1812 in either NY or NJ.   We believe that she passed away around 1856 or before in Pompton, NJ.*

Notes for John Van Dunk
Mary was last recorded in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census.  It is believed that she passed away around 1856 or before.  She had Sarah Emily in 1852.  She is not in the 1860 U.S. Census with the family, therefore her passing was between 1852 and 1860.

1860 U.S. Census records John with only the children; Hannah E., William H., Charles T., Eliza J., Mary A., and Sarah E. living in the household in Pompton, NJ.

Rachel is recorded in the 1860 Census as married to George Van Dunk, and living two dwellings from her father and siblings in Pompton, NJ.

Elias had married Mary E., by this Census because their first child was born in 1859.  They probably lived in another dwelling in Pompton.

1870 U.S. Federal Census records John living with son Elias, his wife and family in Pompton, NJ.

1880 U.S. Federal Census records John living with daughter Sarah Emily, her husband and family in Pompton, NJ.

*Source:  John Van Dunk and Mary Van Dunk were found in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census living in Pompton, NJ with all children except Caroline who passed away in 1848.   Sarah Emily was not born until 1852.

Notes:   for Siblings

Rachel Van Dunk was first found in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census at age 10 living with her parents and siblings.

1860 U.S. Federal  Census,  Rachel was living with her husband George in Pompton, NJ in Dwelling #413.  They had two children at this time; Anna and Harriet, but they were living in Dwelling #414 with a Hannah Morris, age 37.  I do not know how Hannah Morris is connected to the family, maybe George's sister.  In Dwelling #415 was Rachel's Father, my great grandfather John and siblings.

1870 U.S. Federal, Census Rachel and George were living in Pompton, NJ in Dwelling #216 with 7 children.  Brother Elias and family were  in Dwelling #217, and brother William H.H. and family were in Dwelling #218.

1880 U.S. Census, Rachel and George were still  in Pompton, NJ in Dwelling #9 with 4 of their children still living with them.  Brother William H.H. and his family were living in Dwelling #7, and brother Charles T. and his family were in Dwelling #8.

1900 U.S. Federal Census shows Rachel living in Pompton, NJ without George.  This indicates a possible death for George between 1880 and 1900.  Also living with Rachel was son Henry T. born in 1873, and his wife Margaret, Rachel's son Samuel, age 30 now, and a nephew John De Groat bon 3/1881.  This John is probably my great grandmother Mary Adeline's son John, the year of birth is the same.  There was also a granddaughter named Harriet Milligan, which indicates that Rachel's daughter Harriet possibly married a Milligan.

Rachel passed away in 1908, therefore 1900 was the last census she was in.

John Van Dunk  is recorded in the 1850 U.S.  Census with parents and siblings.  I have not done census research on John yet, because the name is so common among Van Dunks, it will take some time to explore them all.
1
William Henry Harrison Van Dunk is first found in the 1850 census at age 11 with his parents and siblings.

1860 U.S. Census William H. H. was 19 years old and living at home with his father and siblings.  Remember that my great grandmother Mary (Maria) had passed away before 1860.

1870 U.S. Census he is found with wife Hannah  and two children living in Pompton, NJ in Dwelling #218 next to brother Elias and his family, and sister Rachel and her family in Dwelling #216.

1880 U.S. Census William is still in Pompton, NJ with wife and six children.  Brother Charles T. and his family are in Dwelling #8, and sister Rachel and her family are in Dwelling #9.

1900 U.S. Census William and Hannah M. are living in Ramapo Twsp in Rockland Co., NY with son William H. and four new children born between 1880 and 1900.

I have additional research to do on William H.H. and Hannah M. in the 1910, 1920, 1930 census.

1

Charles Thomas Van Dunk first found in the 1850 U.S. Census as Thomas age 7 with parents and siblings living in Pompton, NJ.

1860 U.S. Census he  is 17 years old and living in Pompton with his Father John and five siblings.

1870 U.S. Census has not been research for Charles yet.

1880 U.S. Census Charles is married to a Hannah M. and living in Pompton, NJ with seven children.  Brother William H. and sister Rachel are living in dwellings next to him.

1900 U.S. Census Charles and Hannah M. are still in Pompton, NJ with their last son born just before the 1880 Census Thomas R., and three children born between 1881 and 1900.

Eliza (Elisa) Jane Van Dunk was first recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census with her parents and siblings.

1860 U.S. Census she is living at home in Pompton, NJ with her father and other siblings.

No other info has been found on Eliza yet. If she married, have not found out her marriage name yet.

2
Hannah E. Van Dunk is first recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census age 4 with parents and siblings.  I do not have any verifiable info on her yet.

My New York Indian Genealogy Group has linked her with a John E. Van Dunk as her husband with a daughter Mary Elizabeth Van Dunk married to Albert Newkirk Warner, which is a grandchild of Dewitt Clinton's brother William.  This marriage of this Hannah E.'s daughter to her sister's (Mary Adeline) brother-in-law's grandson is a connection that led me to believe that this is my great grandmother's sister Hannah E.

Why I believe that the above may not be true is because in the 1870 U.S. Census there was a William and Hannah De Fries living next to the three Van Dunk siblings; Rachel, William H. H. and Elias.  Hannah De Fries' age in this census is 23 therefore born either 1846 or 1847 depending on month of birth.  My great aunt Hannah E. was also born either 1846 or 1847.  Therefore I believe that this Hannah De Fries could be their sister Hannah E. living next to her other siblings.

I will have to explore this further.  I will leave her as being married to John E. Van Dunk for now.

Elias J. Van Dunk is first found in the 1850 U.S. Census at age 14 living with parents and siblings.

1860 U.S. Census has not been researched for him yet.  He is not living with his Father and siblings in this cenus, therefore he is living on his own, or has married Mary P. and living someplace else.

1870 U.S. Cenus he is shown married to Mary E. and living in Pompton, NJ next to Rachel and William H. H.  Living in his household are to children named John N. or W. initial is illegible, born 1859, and another son John T. born 1864.  My great grandfather John is living with them also, and is 68 yrs old now.  A Samuel Van Dunk age 25 is also in the household, no relationship was established.

I have not research any other census for them yet.  I did find an Elias and Mary E living in Rockland Co, NY in th 1910 census but have not completed the verification yet.

4

Sarah Emily Van Dunk was not born until 1852 therefore,  she was not recorded in the 1850 U.S. census with her parents and siblings.

1860 U.S. Census Sarah E. is first recorded in this census at 8 yrs old with father and siblings.

1870 U.S. Census has not been researched for Sarah yet.

1880 U.S. Census Sarah Emily is married to an Elias Van Dunk and living in West Milford, NJ.  They have four children and my great grandfather John is now living with them at age 78.

1900 U.S. Census Sarah E and Elias were still living in West Milford, NJ with four children born between 1881 and 1900.  I do not know where the children born in the 1870's are or the one born 1880.  They would have been 17, 14, 13, and 12 in 1900, so what happened to them?
