Special Stitches:
Beginning Popcorn (Bpop) = Join yarn with slipstitch, chain 3 (counts as first dc, here and throughout),
make 4 more dc in same stitch. Drop hook, put hook through top stitch of the first chain 3 and through top of last dc made.
Yarn over and pull through both loops, chain 1 to fasten popcorn. (beginning popcorn stitch made) chain 2.
Popcorn Stitch (Pop) = Work 5 dc in same stitch , drop hook, put hook through top stitch of the first dc
and through top of last dc made. Yarn over and pull through both loops, chain 1 to fasten popcorn. (beginning popcorn stitch
made) chain 2.
Round 1 = With color A, chain 4, join with slipstitch to top of first chain to form a ring. Chain 2 work 12 hdc in ring. Fasten off and weave in ends. 12 hdc
Round 2 = Join color B with slipstitch, chain 3 (counts as first dc, here and throughout), make 4 more dc in
same stitch. Drop hook, put hook through top stitch of the first chain 3 and through top of last dc made. Yarn over and pull
through both loops, chain 1 to fasten popcorn. (beginning popcorn stitch made) chain 2. Work 5 dc in next space, drop hook,
put hook through top stitch of the first chain 3 and through top of last dc made. Yarn over and pull through both loops, chain
1 to fasten popcorn. (beginning popcorn stitch made) chain 2. Continue working 1 popcorn stitch in each stitch around. Fasten
off and weave in ends. 12 popcorn stitches.
Round 3 = Join color C, work 1 Bpop and 1 pop in first chain 3 space of previous round. Work 2 pop in next
chain 3 space, work 1 pop in next chain 3 space. *Work 2 pop in next 2 chain 3 spaces, work 1 pop in next chain 3 space.*
Repeat around. Fasten off and weave in ends. 20 popcorn stitches.
Round 4 = Join color D between any 2 popcorn stitches. Chain 4, work 2 more triple crochet (trc), chain 3,
3 trc in same space (first corner made). Work chain 3, 1 sc in next chain 3 space x 4, chain 3. Work 3 trc, chain 3, 3 trc
in next space (second corner made). Continue around having a total of 4 corners with chain 3, 1 sc x 4 plus 1 more chain 3
between each corner. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Round 5 = Join color E in any corner. Work chain 2 (counts as first dc, here and throughout) 2 dc, chain 3,
3 dc in same corner. Work 3 dc in each chain 3 space to next corner. Work 3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc in next corner. Repeat around.
Round 6 & 7 = With color E continue in regular Granny square pattern, having 3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc in each
corner and 3 dc between each 3 dc group from previous round. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Round 8 = Join color F. Chain 3, work 1 dc in each stitch to next corner. Work 3 dc, chain 3, 3 dc in next
corner. Repeat around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
For the cover I
made 12 squares. I whip stitched them together in 4 rows of 3 squares each.
I placed a smiley
face button at the joining of each 4 square group as a reinforcement and decoration. Since this is for a 4 year old little
girl, I did a plain edging of hdc. I worked 3 hdc in the center of each corner and 1 hdc in each stitch around. I worked a
dc cross stitch over the seams of the row ends.
