Fortress Hackenberg

The Metz Fortified Region contained one of the Maginot Line's largest fortified works - Fortress Hackenberg.  This fortress, along with Fortress Hochwald in the Vosges Mountains, was the closest to the ideal Maginot style fortification as envisioned by its designers.  Here are 31 photographs taken by the German Army after the capture of Hochwald.  No combat except for sporadic shelling by the German Army and French counter-battery fire occurred at Hochwald.  The fortress was turned over to the German Army in operating condition.
