On 15 June 1940, the German 7th Army launched Operation Kleiner Bär (Little Bear).  Five infantry divisions conducted an assault crossing of the Rhine River against two French fortress infantry divisions; penetrating the defensive zone and capturing the cities of Colmar and Strasbourg.
