15.1h Bay TB mare

Barbara was certainly the wild child of the farm. While feeding dinner and putting sheets on Barbara spooked and took off running like the wild woman that she is. She got Sunshine Denise all fired up in the process. Sadly Neesy kicked her in the shoulder in the process, we rushed her to the hospital but it was hopelessly shattered. We euthanized her at 10:25 PM. May you run free my wild child.

May
3 year old
Draft Cross mare
16 hands, Bay
May was saved from Indian Joe's thanks to a donation from a wonderful FOB. We had her evaluated by our vet and it was determined that she could not be helped. She has high and low ringbone in both back legs, arthritis of both ankles, a dislocated knee and weak stifles. This poor horse was likely injured and never treated. She would have been treatable had she gotten medical care when it first happened, but she went like this for years and it crippled her. We had May put down on Sept 26, 2007                             R.I.P. May.....run like you should have been able to

Green Ridge
2001 Reg TB Mare
16h
Green Ridge was an exceptional mare but suffered many problems after coming off the track. She had foundered, abcessed, and then finally suffered a twisted intestine. We tried everything and pulled out all the stops, but Green Ridge wanted to go to greener pastures. She was laid to rest surrounded by her foster parents Mark  & Karin K and  myself. May you run free Green Ridge.

Hope came to us on March 10th, 2007 after injuring herself in a race the evening of March 7th, 2007. Her owners wanted her to find a new home, but didn't want to pay for the x-rays that she desperately needed to find out what she had injured. After haggling with the owners (who wanted us to pay for her) they agreed to let her come here so that we could find out what was wrong. When she got here she would not bare weight on the affected limb at all. Our vet x-rayed her on March 11th, 2007 and determined that she had 2 slab fractures of her knee (slab fracture is a term that means that the fracture extends from one edge of the bone all the way to the other edge of the bone.) In addition to the 2 new slab fractures the knee contained a severe amount of arthritis, likely from a prior fracture or chip in the knee. There was also speculation that she had ruptured a tendon, but we did not use ultrasound to diagnose this as we already knew what we had to do. Without surgery the prognosis was grave, she would never be able to walk on that leg because if she did the knee joint could collapse and the remaining three legs would be almost certain to develop laminitis. We called New Bolton Medical Center and discussed her case with one of their vets who confirmed that without surgery the situation was grave. With surgery it wouldn't be much better. The surgery costs between $6000-$8000 if their are no complications. This particular surgery carries a 50-75% complication rate. The surgery would fuse her knee joint so that her knee would no longer bend at all and atbest she would be "humanely comfortable in a pasture" according to the vet we spoke to. So on March 12th, 2007 we had Hope euthanized.                                                                  RIP brave little girl.
