Maine Railroad Stations, icons of a rich railroading heritage, abound throughout the state as residences,
business and/or museums. Although their role in passenger travel has long disappeared, their unique appearance, locations and
former function bring forth memories of a less complicated time.
On this site are posted recent photos of existing stations as an effort to remind us of the
importance of the local train station. From the late 19th century through World War II, the local train station was not only
the focal point of passenger and freight movement, but the primary means of maintaining contact with the rest of the
world, whether by delivered newspaper, Sears catalogue, telegraph or gossip. The station was the point that soldiers
and sailors departed for war and returned to family or final resting place. Honeymooners, vacationers, businessmen,
students, farmers, and relatives stepped on and off the platforms. International and regional news came in, local went out.
Virtually all out of state mail traveled by train. For most towns and villages, the train station was most likely their
second most important facility.

This site is a look at those few stations still standing in the State of Maine, listed by county
on the left navigation column and alphabetically in the middle pages. Few exist in their capacity of selling tickets or handling
baggage, many are small businesses or residence and some are simply abandoned.
In the listings are some basic information
and location for rail fans such as myself seeking a glimpse of the past. This web site is a work in progress and continually
upgraded as new information is found, my travels take me, and research conducted.

in mind that this is a hobby, not an academic or commercial undertaking. Old photos and corrections are always welcome, and
higher resolution photos on these pages available for down loading no conditions attached. Blank spots that exist on
