I'm training for the 90-mile LiveSTRONG Challenge bike ride in Austin in October to
honor my dad, Murray, who is battling pancreatic cancer. If you hate cancer too, we'd love your support! And,
here's the cool thing: if you support my ride with a donation of $10 or more before midnight, Friday, September 25, you'll get a chance to win a new bike! [Sorry, the bike giveaway is over - but your support remains welcome!]
Why I'm Riding (and raising money)
My dad is a great guy, and he's spread far more than his share of joy over the years.
No, neither the ride nor the donations can make my dad better, but it'll keep me busy (OK, busier) and
it's better than sitting around getting angry. (I've got at least two teammates, James and Craig, along for the ride, and
I appreciate it - I'm gonna need their help getting thru a long day in the saddle!)
Moreover, I'm REALLY sick of cancer. It took my mom (breast cancer and, later, secondary bone
cancer); it's messed with my sister (breast cancer); and I got off relatively lightly (with testicular cancer). Add in my
father-in-law (lymphoma) and my friends and colleagues and students, and, well, you get the idea.
I've worn my yellow band for years - I like the work the LiveSTRONG people do, and I think their message - of hope and strength - is a good one.
