First JSA/BGS Cards Authenticated
I recently learned that two of my autographed deadballers are coming home from Texas in a Beckett Grading Service holder, authenticated by JSA.  Thus, my autographed T202 of Davy Jones and my E91 of George McBride have been authenticated and encapsulated and are on their way home to me.

This is good news, but with respect to the McBride, not entirely surprising since JSA had previously authenticated this one and affixed its annoying sticker to the reverse.  Sticker removed, with paper loss, I wanted the card encapsulated -- and so I got my wish.

Scans of both to follow upon receipt...

A Message From Mastro Re: Auction Extension

Our Recent Website Service Issues

Further analysis of the network difficulties we were experiencing yesterday have revealed the problem to be more severe than originally anticipated and unrelated to our internal systems. Our commercial internet service provider has indicated that there is a weather damage-related, area-wide problem with our fiber optic line. We are currently running the auction using our backup system, which can handle ordinary traffic like viewing lots and placing bids. However, because we do not want to take any chances closing the auction with our backup system and risk any service gaps at crucial closing times, we have chosen to extend the bidding until next Tuesday and Wednesday, July 1st and 2nd.

Bidding for lots 1-863 will end on Tuesday, July 1st, and bidding for lots 864-2174 will end on Wednesday, July 2nd. We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause, but we felt it was necessary to ensure a satisfying conclusion to the auction process.

Reminder of New Closing Time!

Please remember that effective with this Classic Collector Auction, initial bids will be due at 9:00 PM Central Time, and the 30-minute timer will kick off at 10:00 PM Central Time. We trust that you'll enjoy the extra hour of sleep after the conclusion of an exciting session!

New Submissions & An Auction Plug
I sent my first package of autographed deadballers to BVG/JSA this week.  I figured I should at least give them a try given that (a) PSA's customer service last time was atrocious; and (b) I really liked the SGC/JSA product -- even if JSA unceremoniously broke off relations with SGC, which is the preferred grader of deadball cards.  I sent in my E91 McBride, after I scraped the annoying JSA sticker off the back, and my T202 Davy Jones, which I had been meaning to send in for some time now.  I also sent in a "wild card" of a card -- a T206 signed Frank Smith, beautifully signed in white.  I have seen but one exemplar of a Frank Smith autograph, and though it was close, it was not exact.  Interestingly, I have been informed that PSA/DNA and BVG/JSA might not have any exemplars off of which to match up Mr. Smith's signature.  So, I might get back an "unable to authenticate" notation.  Still, it is a beauty of a card.

Finally, please note that the Mastro auction, which includes four signed deadballers from the T206Collector.com collection, ends in a few short hours.  Click the link above to check them out and get your bids in to qualify for the extended bidding period.  So far only 9 bidders have chimed in, so they might actually go fairly cheap -- which is good for you; not so good for me!

NYPL Donation
I donated 9 T206 cards to the New York Public Library today to fill a small hole of "common" T206 cards in the Goulston collection.  As previously reported, I had originally thought there were 14 missing cards.  As it turns out, I somehow missed a page filled with H-letter cards in my last review, and so Hayden, Hartsel and both Herzogs were unneeded.  In addition, I somehow missed the Kleinow NY with bat pose in my last review.  So I did not donate that one either.

Neverthelesss I did part with 9 -- which is a fitting, baseball-centric number, just enough to field a team.  And, again, you can read all about it by clicking the Goulston Collection articles link above.

Goulston Collection Donation
Well, my search is finally complete.  I have compiled the 14 "common" T206 cards missing from Goulston's collection at the New York Public Library.  They all arrived in the mail, and I will deliver them to the library tomorrow.  If you'd like to see them, click here:

Obviously, not all in the best condition.  But neither were many of Goulston's, so I think they fit in nicely.

NYPL Donation and Mastro Auctions
Mastro goes live today!  Click the link in What's New to check it out.

Also, I finished acquiring the 14 cards necessary to finish Goulston's T206 "common card" checklist.  That is, I've paid for them all -- but they haven't all arrived yet.  Once I get them in hand, I'll make an appointment to go to the New York Public Library, confirm these cards were all missing and then make arrrangements for their donation.

To anyone who responded to my request for these 14 cards, I appreciate your help.  And so does the New York Public Library!

NYPL Donation
I am just 2 cards away -- Herzog BOS & Kleinow NY w/ Bat -- from having each of the 14 common cards that Leo Goulston didn't manage to acquire as part of his large collection of T206 cards, which are kept in an album in the rare books section of the New York Public Library at 42nd and 5th in midtown Manhattan.  Once I get them, I will bring them all over to the library and donate them.  Though it will not make Goulston's collection complete, it will be a nice supplement and -- who knows? -- may one day encourage other collectors to finish this or other publicly held near sets or collections.

When I had my 521, I often thought about a good place to showcase them.  This is like a mini version of that for me.  Sure, the 14 are in well-lesser shape, by and large, but it is nice to be able to contribute to a public collection of T206 cards that is really not owned by anyone specifically, but rather is just in a sort of public trust.

I'll post further on my donation soon.

Auctions Abound
So far it has been a fun experience watching two of my lots in different auctions.  This is the first time I have consigned my cards to anyone -- usually I go through ebay or private sale via Net54 B/S/T -- and it is really interesting.  The cards in both the B&L and Mastro auctions look terrific and I am eagerly anticipating the ends of each.  I am curious to see whether this format yields higher returns than ebay and private sales.  Based on the REA sales of similar cards, it appears that a specialized auction format is better for this kind of thing, but we'll see.

Mastro Is In Previews
Hurrah!  My auction has finally been listed.  Click the top link in the What's New section above to check it out.

Originally slated for April 2008, this consignment is a wee bit overdue.  Fortunately I didn't need the money and I could be patient.  And the wait has thus far been worth it.  The auction looks incredible.  I am very pleased.
