T206 Advertisements

There are many ways to collect and enjoy T206 cards.  One tangential way of celebrating them is to find old newspapers containing cigarette advertisements that included references to T206 cards.  From these advertisements, we can often learn things about how T206 cards were manufactured, packaged, distributed and marketed.  For example, one of the more interesting aspects of some of these advertisements is that multiple cards often seem to appear in each box.  For a long time, it was presumed that only one card came per pack of cigarettes.  The fact of the matter is that for many brands at least two cards came in each pack.  In addition, it is interesting to note that artists' renderings on these advertisements often show the player's name and team designation printed at the top of the card, while we all know that the names were actually printed on the bottom.  This must have been done just for purposes of advertisement layout.  But it does give some credibility to those rare miscuts that have the name and team on top.

I have spent many a weekend pouring through old newspapers trying to find cigarette card advertisements, but I think the problem is I don't live in New Orleans or have general access to their archives.  Only once was I able to locate any genuine T206 ads in newspapers, when a diligent antique newspaper salesman was willing to comb through his old papers for me -- for a moderate price, of course!  Sadly, I do not own these T206 advertisements any longer, but through the beauty of modern technology I am still able to view and share these and more T206 advertisements below.  (Make sure to click on the scans to see larger/clearer images.)
