Issued between 1910-11 by Sporting Life Magazine, these colorful cards feature hand-tinted black
and white portraits, many of which are the same as found in the T206 set. Here we have "Smoky" Joe Wood, who beautifully
signed his image on this M116 card. Wood lived until 1985, just shy of his 96th birthday, and would have been the oldest
member of T206 by 5 years (surpassing Marquard who died in 1980) had he been shown on a T206 card. Given Wood's first
year was 1908, it would not have been out of the question for him to be shown on a T206 card. His absence from T206
and from T205 is one of the lesser known mysteries surrounding those tobacco issues. While Wood didn't play much in
1908, he was a full time player by 1909 and a veritable star by 1911, the last year of T206 and the only year of T205.
This sharp looking card is shown courtesy of its proud and rightful owner. It is the only example of a signed M116
card that I have ever heard of. If you've heard of or seen another, please let me know.
